AN: Hi people, here’s a chapter fic from moi! Anyhoo, read on, and when you finish, review please! It’s KINDA like a high school fic, but it doesn’t revolve completely around school, just for your info, lol.

Chapter One: As Nice As It Seems

----

Staring out of the dark window of her father’s jet black limo, 15 year-old Kairi Jacobs sighed. Today was the first day of 10th grade. And she really, really wasn’t looking forward to it.

It’s not that she didn’t like the learning part, because she did (And her straight A grades proved it), it was the social problems that drove the teen out of her mind. See, her father was mayor of Destiny Islands, and most kids were so nervous to be friends with her because they feared that if they did something wrong while hanging out with her, their families would get banned or kicked off the island. Or…some outrageous idea like that.

Now, Kairi knew that wasn’t true at all! Her father was one of the sweetest—but busiest—men she’d ever met! At least… he was like that when he paid attention to her. But…alas, no one ever gave her a chance to tell them that, because everyone was too afraid to even be near the poor girl. And to add to those problems…Kairi was an incredibly talented young lady.

She was probably the most gifted singer in the whole entire high school, she was the art program’s most prized artist, she was a constant straight A student, and she was sweet and beautiful. Now, all of that just sounds like a social problem just waiting to happen, doesn’t it? Yup, as you assumed, practically every girl in school loathed and/or envied her madly. So, almost every clique/posse turned on her, which did not place her high at all in the social standards of high school. Somehow though, Kairi found a way to escape it all, through at least one of her talents.

And just to add a little spice to this wonderful day, it’s pouring rain outside!, Kairi bitterly though to herself as she stared at the gray blue horizon.

Yup, the weather wasn’t helping her mood at all. The normally shining blue sky was now a deep gray blue, and the normally puffy white clouds were now replaced with dark gray, ominous storm ones. A tad of fog covered the horizon, making the island seem like some scene out of a horror movie. And, to top it all off, it was pouring down rain.

Kairi sighed angrily, blowing a strand of her auburn red hair out of her purplish-blue eyes. Suddenly, her father’s voice pierced her thoughts,

NO, Vladimir, I told you to not sell that to him!” Her father’s voice was not normally so frustrated, so Kairi, curious, looked.

Her dreary face just got worse as a look of disappointment flowed over it. Her father was talking to an assistant of his, on his new cell.

It’s not like Kairi wasn’t used to it, I mean, he was always talking to someone over the phone, but today was supposed to be different. He was supposed to be helping her cope with her first day, by comforting her, and offering pacific words. Like normal dads did when their hormonal teens were having it rough. But no, she couldn’t have a normal father…

Slowly, she scooted around a bit in the fancy leather seat to adjust her aching legs. She crossed her arms, angered, and slumped down. Soon, the turn to her school appeared on the car’s path. She cringed. There was no turning back now.

The school’s immense parking lot soon filled the windshield’s vision. The driver, Chaz, swiftly maneuvered the car around so that it stopped in front of the huge double doors of the public school.

Kairi never understood why her parents put her in the public high school, because they could certainly afford any private academy, and it would make her life sooo much easier. At least there, there’d be other rich, talented girls who Kairi could be friends with.

Her father suddenly, as if he just realized that the car was stopped, looked curiously around at his surroundings, and his eyes widened.

“Uh…yeah, Vlad, I’ve gotta go,” He spoke into his cell, starting to end the conversation. A silence was heard as his assistant spoke back. Then her dad spoke again, “Yeah, today’s Kairi’s first day, and she’s probably nervous,” He said, and rolled his eyes.

Kairi felt a stab of hurt. Why would her father find that frustrating?

Suddenly, Chaz turned as he noticed the girl’s hurt face. He smiled and announced,

“We’re here. Miss Jacobs, why don’t you get on out?” He suggested.

Kairi smiled. Chaz was always so nice, and he was one of the only people who really knew how she felt. He always found a way to help her feel better.

Kairi then heard the snap of her dad’s cell phone as he closed it tight. Looking towards him, she noticed him anxiously looking around the school.

“Yeah…uh, okay, Kairi, better get going!” He stammered, and shot a quick, uneasy grin towards his daughter. He then kissed her lightly on the cheek, and opened his cell again as he began dialing.

Kairi bit her bottom lip as water came to her lavender eyes. She forced a fake, uneasy smile to appear on her face, and opened the door. Grabbing her books, she stood up in the rain beforepeering into the limo one last time asshe looked towards her dad and muttered,

“Love you…”

She'd hoped for a response, but got nothing but the incoherent chatter of her father’s conversation. Sadly she looked down, and turned towards Chaz’s window.

Chaz, who’d watched the whole thing, shot a death glare at the mayor as he wasn’t looking. Seriously...what kind of dad was he? He then rolled down the window and looked out toward Kairi. He smiled slightly, as did she, and spoke,

“Well, don’t worry Kai,I’m sure you’ll have a marvelous day! I’ll pick you up here at 3:30!” He told her.

She nodded, and smiled as she slammed the limo door shut. The jet black car thenswerved around, and Kairi watched as the car drove out of sight.

201…202…203! Aha!
Kairi scanned the number plates on the doors of the second floor and found her room number. She glanced at her schedule one more time.

“Okay…yeah. Here it is: AP World History, room 203,” She read aloud as she confirmed her position. Slowly, she stuffed the already crumpled piece of paper into her gray skirt pocket and opened the door to her class.

The history classroom was quaint, decorated with several posters of famous speeches said over the years, and a few timelines here and there. Students were scattered around the classroom, most in groups, either standing around talking or sitting in or on desks chatting. A few rowdy boys were running around and yelling jokes and other crazy things at each other as they played around. The teacher obviously wasn’t here yet.

She slowly walked into the room, looking down. Geez! Why couldn’t she have more self-confidence? The chatting suddenly stopped. Kairi felt a rush of blood fly to her face as all the students stared at her as she moved across the room. Girls shot her hateful longing looks as boys raised an eyebrow and glanced at her curiously while some of the boys’ eyes sparkled with slight interest in her beauty. She bit her bottom lip and her fingers tightened around her schoolbooks. She took a deep shaky breath and ignored the stares as she sat in a desk, up in the front row, far from all of the other teenagers. Silence was inevitable.

Suddenly, a voice was heard down the hallway, an angry one that seemed to be yelling.

“Yeah, well, next time, Mr.Veder, watch where the heck you’re going!”

All the students’ eyes—including Kairi’s—widened as they realized that that probably was…

“Hello children!” A woman poked her head through the doorway. She had long blonde hair, pulled into a messy ponytail, and her eyes were a gorgeous green, appearing to have somewhat of a swirl to them.

She walked fully in. Wow, she was actually really pretty!

Her outfit was not like other teachers; Instead of a preppy skirt and blouse, she wore a bright yellow short sleeve shirt and a pleated khaki skirt. One of her many accessories was an orange rhinestone belt wrapped around her waist, and tattered flip flops were her choice of footwear. It seemed like more of a summer outfit rather than a September one. Kairiassumed immediately that this teacher was going to be very interesting…

This “interesting” teacher waltzed over to her desk, and dropped her white purse down upon it. Then she plopped her body down into her blue chair and sighed, blowing a stray strand of her blonde hair away from her lime green eyes. She closed them, and sat still and silent.

The students sat in their seats, some looking and whispering to each other, and some just staring, wide-eyed. Kairi was one of the wide-eyed ones. All of them waited for her to say something…anything.

Suddenly, her quiet, seemingly serene form jumped up in a peppy way, and all her students, startled at her sudden outburst, jumped back a bit as well.

She placed her hands on her hips and smiled a huge, happy grin.

“Well hello class!” She started, and pointed to herself. “I’m Miss. Rikku!” She playfully chuckled and added, “I’m not telling you my last name…it’s waaay too weird for you kids!” She started laughing, obviously not noticing the strange, awkward stares from her pupils. She suddenly stopped, and slammed her hands down on the desk. “Okay…welcome to AP World History you 10th graders!” She happily announced, and began her lesson…

Kairi walked out of her history classroom at 11:45, with her lilac eyes were wide in surprise. Whoa…this teacher was really wild! Instead of the normal ways of teaching, she taught in her own way.

She made everyone get up and play a game, first thing, as she taught her lesson. It was really crazy, and of course, Kairi was always so nervous when she played games anyway, that the craziness didn’t really help at all.

She shook off the shock and took a look at her schedule:

11:00-World History, Room 203

12:00-Lunch

Kairi sighed. Lunch was next. She always sat alone, and this year probably wouldn’t be any different. So, with a heavy heart, she trudged towards the cafeteria.

XxxxX

Cha ching!

The classic sound of the cash register rang throughout the lunch hall. The bright red fingernails of the cafeteria lunch lady placed Kairi’s 10 dollarsinto the other piles of bills. The snap of the lunch lady’s bubble gum was heard as she slammed the cash register’s door closed.

“Thank you…” She gazed at Kairi, and smiled a fake, forced grin.

Kairi shrugged, and smiled uneasily in return. She turned on her heel, and quickly walked out of the lunch line.

As she approached the main room, she gazed around the huge cafeteria and saw the main 10th grade tables, which were labeled as followed:

Emos, preps, jocks, popular people, punks, Goths and nerds.

There...wasn't much of a choice for individuality.

Kairi didn’t fall into the category of any of them, so, she sighed, and shaking her head, she walked towards a small, empty table towards the back, by the vending machines and bathroom. Sitting down, she gazed at her miscellaneous lunch. Salt and Vinegar chips, a tuna sandwich, an oatmeal cookie, and a bottle of water. Her lunch represented her life: Lonely, simple, and…pathetic.

Kairi waited outside the school doors, watching for Chaz and the blackcar. Many kids passed her lonely form, not even sparing her a passing glance. Kairi was used to it, after so many years of being ignored, but still…it hurt a little. She was so nice and sweet, and still no one ever gave her a chance. Sighing, she clutched her schoolbooks tighter, and placed one foot up against the hard brick wall behind her. She leaned back, and closed her eyes. A passing girl about her age spoke to her friend,

“Hey, I heard there’s going to be a new kid!”

Kairi’s eyes snapped open. A new kid? She would have heard about this, since her father was mayor and all.

“Cool! Is it a girl or boy?” The teenager’s friend responded.

The girl shrugged.

“Dunno, but I hope that if it’s a guy, he’s cute!” Then the two teens walked off, giggling madly. Kairi rolled her eyes.

Suddenly, she heard the honking of a horn. She snapped up, and looked. Smiling as she saw her ride, she dashed over quickly, and casually got into the car.

XxxxX

Creak, creak, creak…

The squeaky old sound of her porch swing rung throughout the huge yard as Kairi sat on it. She gazed at the appearing stars as the swing moved back and forth rhythmically, one move after another. Her lavender eyes sparkled with wonder as she gazed at the fiery balls of light that were so many light years away. They were…beautiful. She cherished these moments when she could be by herself, and relax...just to contemplate and think on life.

Suddenly, the front door opened, casting a shadow of light upon the moonlight stricken porch. Chaz poked his head out, and smiled.

“Miss. Jacobs, time for dinner,” He announced, and motioned for her to come in.

She smiled and nodded.

“Be right there,” She replied as he closed the door.

With one last look at the stars, and a deep sigh, she got up slowly, and walked into her house.

“So…honey, how was your first day?” Mrs. Jacobs asked over her food, looking towards her daughter while brushing a strand of her red hair out of the way of her dark purple eyes.

Kairi looked towards her mother, than looked back down at her food.

“Fine…” She uttered, hardly above a whisper.

She never bothered to tell her parents the truth about her school life…they wouldn’t care. They were too “busy”…

Her mother said nothing, but looked towards her husband, who in turn looked down towards his plate. There was an awkward silence between the family, and Kairi, who couldn’t stand it, suddenly spoke up,

“I heard a girl today talking about a new kid coming to school, did you hear anything, dad?” She asked, looking towards her father.

He looked up from his salad, and smiled slightly. Dabbing his mouth with his napkin, he sighed and replied,

“Yes, actually, they’re moving in Wednesday.”

Mrs. Jacobs’s eyes lit up.

“Hey, that’s in two days!” She pointed out, and Mr. Jacobs nodded.

“Yes, and guess what, Kairi?” He said and looked towards his daughter.

Kairi, who wasn’t used to her father actually talking to her, snapped out of her trance.

“Huh? Sorry Dad, I didn’t hear you,” She admitted, and looked towards him.

“I was just saying, I heard they had a child.”

Kairi’s eyes widened in surprise…and interest.

“Really…do you know their name?” She asked, curious.

Her father shook his head.

“No…but, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adams, and coming tonight at 7 to sign some papers,” He stated.

Mrs. Jacobs suddenly shot up.

“Oh my gosh! Company! I have to go clean!” She exclaimed anxiously and dashed off.

Kairi and her father stared at her mother’s retreating form. She was sometimes an odd one…

“Yeah…okay…Dad?” Kairi broke the awkward silence.

“Yes?” Her parent replied.

“I’ve gotta go do homework,” She answered, and got up, walking towards her room, without another word.

XxxxX

Kairi stared at the mass of papers spread out before her.

Name the major people and events leading up to Destiny Island’s fifth war.

“Okay…our 5th war was the one with Spira…and it was over…resources, I think?” Kairi thought aloud to herself, thinking about the question. Suddenly, she heard voices downstairs, in the lobby.

“Huh…maybe the new couple’s here!” She exclaimed happily, and dashed up from her tidy desk, rushing downstairs in excitement.

XxxxX

When she got to the bottom, she suddenly felt a rush of embarrassment and stopped at the end of the staircase. Maybe her father didn’t want her to be there when they signed the papers…she was right by the lobby, so she poked her head around the doorway, staring at the two people shaking hands with her father.

The woman was around her mother’s age, with long blonde hair and what looked to be pale green eyes. She was beautiful, and was the one who seemed to be smiling and doing the talking. The husband, who was quiet, smiling slightly, obviously nervous, had chocolate brown hair, styled in a mass of spikes. His eyes appeared to be dark amber.

Kairi smiled to herself. They seemed really sweet, but she really, really wanted to know about their…

“WHOA!” Kairi suddenly cried out, tripping over her playful puppy, Rover, who had been walking in front of her feet. She fell to the ground in a crash, and her dog yelped before running away madly. Her father and the two visitors looked. Kairi looked up, her hair a mess, and her clothing wrinkled. She turned beet red and nervously scampered to her feet. Smoothing out her gray and pink sweater as best as she could, she quickly apologized,

“Oh my goodness I’m so, so sorry!” She frantically said, and her father raised an eyebrow in disapprovment.

Suddenly, the woman burst out laughing, and the man smiled awkwardly. Kairi looked down, now more embarrassed then ever. The woman walked over, and pulled Kairi’s chin up so that her violet eyes met her own light emerald ones. Her jovial, sweet face helped Kairi’s embarrassment level go down drastically.

“Mr. Jacobs…you didn’t tell us you had a daughter!” She happily said, and smiled, her pearly whites shining. She turned and looked at Kairi’s dad, awaiting an answer.

He cleared his throat, and walked over hastily. He placed a hand on Kairi’s shoulder, and spoke,

“This is my daughter, Kairi Jacobs. She’s in 10th grade, and she’s 15.”

The woman grinned.

“Oh that’s marvelous! Honey, come here!” She instructed to her husband, and motioned for him to come. He obeyed, and smiled before shaking hands with Kairi.

“You’ll probably be seeing our son soon, he’ll be going to your school,” He said.

Kairi’s eyes lit up. Finally, she knew something about the new kid!

“Oh yes, he’s really….” The woman trailed off, and seemed to be searching for the right words. “…interesting.” She finished her sentence with that.

There was an awkward silence.

“His name’s Sora…Sora Adams, and he’s your age,” The man told her, and smiled uneasily, probably trying to avoid the topic of his son.

Kairi smiled sweetly, but still wondered why they bothspoke of Sora in such a strange way.

“Oh…that’s...cool! I’ll keep an eye out for him!” Kairi replied kindly.

Her father stepped in.

“Well, Mr. and Mrs. Adams, we should probably be signing those papers!” He said, and the couple agreed. The trio walked into the mayor’s office, leaving Kairi standing there alone.

Mrs. Adams looked back and waved,

“Bye Kairi!” She called.

The teenager waved back. As the double doors of her dad’s office closed, Kairi looked down, thinking to herself.

Sora’s parents were hiding something about him…and Kairi wanted to find out what.
