Every night he lies in bed, listening to Sam's gentle breathing next to him, and thinks himself selfish. He knows he is. Preventing Sam to do the decent, normal thing and settle down with a lass, because of his own, unnatural, desires.

Selfish because he has taken away Sam's wishes of children and a family and his father being proud of the Hobbit he has grown into, and changed them, so that Sam's only desire is to make sure Frodo is happy and content.

One night, Frodo will tell Sam these thoughts. Sam will only laugh, and tell him that he's not being selfish, he's being loved.
