I Couldn’t Sleep
written bycleojan5

She crawled out of bed and walked soundlessly out of the dormitory, out of the common room, and into the hall. The rain could be heard, pattering on the roof and windows like a drum. She sat down and cried, about nothing in particular, she just cried.

She heard footsteps coming toward her, from the direction of the common room. Had someone followed her out? She didn’t wait to see. She stood up and ran. Down the stairs, down another flight of stairs, through a door or two or three or four, and more stairs, until she was outside.

The rain steadily continued to pound. She walked through the grass, scarcely able to hear the sound of her own footsteps over the roaring sound of the rain. The night was dark, frightening almost. She shivered.

She asked herself why she was sad. What was it that had driven her to run outside in the middle of the night? She couldn’t place it, but at the same time she knew. It was because of him. Him, who’s voice she thought she heard almost every night, only to awaken and find that he was not there. She cried harder.

She heard something. Whipping around, she saw him standing there. Gorgeous, as usual. Whenever was he not? She felt herself grow hot as she realized what she might look like, soaking wet and dirty.

“What are you doing out here?” he yelled over the rain.

“I couldn’t sleep.” she half sobbed.

“What’s wrong?”

She turned away, unable to face him. “What am I doing here?” she thought, “This is ridiculous! What was I thinking? If I couldn’t go to sleep, I should have done homework, not run outside, I am such an idiot!”

She turned around, wondering if he thought she was crazy. She was beginning to question her own sanity herself.

He certainly seemed to be thinking. He had his head tilted a little to the side. She loved that look he gave.

And them, he seemed to be coming closer. “Could that be possible? Maybe it’s just the rain.” Thoughts ran through her head as he got closer and closer, “What am I doing? I need to go to bed, this is stupid. I must look a sight. Gosh, why won’t he just say something? I can’t stand this silence. I should never come out here in the first place. Oh why….”

She didn’t have time to finish her thought. He was now so close she could feel herself trembling. She felt his arms around her waist. And then he kissed her. And every condescending thought vanished from her head. She forgot about the rain, about what a strange situation this was, and about the fact that she should be studying for her exams, which were only a month and a half away. She forgot everything. Her thoughts were filled with nothing but him.

She had no idea how long it lasted, she was in such a daze. Sometime later she walked in a dazed sort of way back into the school and into her bed. She fell asleep almost immediately, with her last waking though being “He loves me…”
