My eyes reflect a smile I never knew.
I see it in their faces
every time they bring a gaze beyond my windswept-
raven, someone-else's hair.

I'm told baby stories
by moving pictures
and portraits that speak
as you pass them late at night
with a tiny wooden light ahead of you.

Sometimes that stiff, little beam seems
the only thing
keeping me on this path that I didn't choose.
