Eternity by your side

The line stretched on as far a the eye could see. Curving slightly before being lost to the horizon. Men and women of all age and race waited calmly shuffling forward when the space appeared. It was strangely quiet and totally devoid of the usual tension most people showed when being forced to wait.

It completely unnerved Seto.

He walked slowly down the line searching the mass of people for a familiar face. They looked back at him with vague disinterest, not at all bothered that he was forcing his way further in front. Seto thought he should be surprised at the sheer number of people in the line, but that might distract him from the face he was looking for. It hadn't been that long since he'd followed. Surely he would find his quarry towards the back of this endless line.

There.

Jounouchi blinked up at him in surprise as Seto cut in next to him. The blonde frowned slightly before hoarsely whispering, "What're you doing here Kaiba?"

Seto smiled slightly, "Taking my place in line."

"Next to me?" Jou smiled back, a beautiful curve to his lips. "You sure about that?"

Seto cupped the blonde's cheeks and leaned close, "Dead sure."

Jou's laugh at the bad pun was smothered by Seto's lips. The laughter still escaped, though bubbling and choked, from the bloody gash that crossed his throat and had taken his life. Pale fingers threaded into Seto's hair pulling him closer and brushed against the ragged hole there, and he sighed in relief as the blood in Jou's mouth washed away the dull taste of gunpowder.

The line of the dead stretched beyond what any mortal's eyes could see. None of the souls patiently waiting their turn at death's gate minded though. They had all of eternity to reach their destination, and it never really took long for a loved one to join the line.
