Watanuki was an angry, depressed and anxious person by nature. It came from being followed around by creepy, crawly, giant masses of things that no one else could see or smell or hear. It came from those things trying to latch onto him, eat him alive, suck his soul dry, or use him to find enlightenment, peace and the afterlife. It came from being hired for a job that he didn't really want in a world that didn't believe in it and being surrounded by idiots or morons or absolute whack jobs.
It came from, above and beyond all that, being Mr. Nice Guy, who made lunches for Doumeko (that bastard), smiling winningly at Himawari-chan who was so cute and never really noticed him and always invited Doumeki or Yuuko or worse, both. It came from going home and making fantastically stunning meals for Yuuko-san and having her dull them with mass quantities of liquor. It came from doing piles and piles of chores and running errands and then being assigned to do stupid, dangerous things with that annoying bastard Doumeki.
People. Watanuki's problems started and ended with people. Yuuko abused him and sent him to Doumeki who ruined every happiness he got close to. Himawari-chan didn't even see it because she was just so nice and sweet and perfect that she couldn't believe anything terrible or weird. \
Well, one weird thing. But that was because she was so Ðnice-. So nice that she didn't even question what she had walked in on. So nice that she didn't notice how freaked out Watanuki was, how red his ears were, how immediately afterwards he had first gaped like a fish and then bared his teeth and growled at Doumeki. How he would have leapt at the bastard with the intent and ability to kill if she hadn't been there, if he hadn't been keeping the ghosts away for the moment.
Ghosts. The bastard had used them as an excuse. "Do you feel any here, Watanuki?" He had asked so calmly in that stupid, flat, monotonous voice of his.
"Ghosts?" Watanuki had fallen right into it, like the idiot he was. "A few," he had glanced at the walls, where he could see some things slipping through and then away because of his annoying partner. "But they're staying to the edges."
"I can make them stay further back." Doumeki wasn't bragging, he was just stating a fact and that pissed Watanuki off even just that much more, because that was so classically him.
"How?" And then Doumeki, that stinky, conniving rat-bastard of an asshole had leaned in and kissed him. He'd even used tongue.
"Oh! Sorry, Doumeki-san, Watanuki-san! I'll come back in a few minutes!" Himawari-chan was in the doorway with the staff Yuuko had taken her off to pick up and Watanuki was torn between denying instantly and vehemently and turning and ripping Doumeki to shreds if only he could look at him without absolutely bursting into flames but Himawari-chanÉ Himawari-chan then paused and smiled so brightly, saying, "I'm so glad you two finally got together!" and beamed and left the room with a giggle.
Watanuki hated people.
