Chapter One:
The Forty Thieves

Excitement filled the streets of Agrabah. Princess Jasmine, the future queen of Agrabah, was finally marrying – a long-awaited moment by everyone. People flocked to the palace in great masses, from near and far. Cheers erupted from all directions as the trumpets sounded again, time slowly ticking away until the big moment. Outside strangers and commoners alike were murmuring of the anticipation that hovered over the city.

However, not everyone was content with the princess’s decision. The groom would be a street rat, and the very idea of royalty marrying the common folk was simply unheard of.

Faral half-heartedly glanced out the window, rolling his eyes at the lengthening lines of the wedding that would start in just under three hours. “What fools!” he remarked to himself. “I can’t believe anyone would actually go to a wedding like this. Princess Jasmine is just throwing her life away to the scum of the earth, and everyone is excited about it! Doesn’t she know she’s supposed to marry a prince?”

“What did you say Faral?” he heard a sweet voice call out from the other room. He silently cursed himself for having been so loud. Karina appeared, wearing a simple but elegant dress. She smiled, her brown eyes glittering for a moment before repeating her question. “Something about a prince?”

He took a deep breath. “Um, I was just saying how I thought… that it was interesting how so many people were coming to the wedding. I had no idea that everyone would be so excited,” he stated only half-truthfully.

She frowned for a moment. “Why wouldn’t they be?”

“Well, just because this Aladdin isn’t a prince. I wouldn’t think most people would agree with her decision to marry a commoner.”

“You don’t feel this way, do you?” Karina eyed him suspiciously.

He shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t feel one way or the other,” he replied curtly.

Not quite believing him, she continued. “Come on, give the guy a chance. I mean, it might not be that bad. It might be good to have some change around here. And I’ve heard he has some great plans for the well-being of Agrabah.”

Faral found it hard not to laugh and turned toward the window again. “If he did, he wouldn’t be marrying the princess. He would realize that only a prince knows what’s best for the city. Royalty isn’t in charge for nothing. They know what’s best for the city and not some str…” He caught himself just before he said the word. He glanced to Karina again, her face voicing the frustration she felt.

“Look, I know that you don’t want anything bad to happen,” she responded. “But it will be a change for the better. Just come to the wedding with me and meet him. I’m sure you’ll change your mind. Please Faral?” She pleaded, her eyes shining with a naive love.

He hesitated for a moment, before responding, “How could I refuse when someone as beautiful as you is asking me?”

At the palace, everyone was feeling the rush of the wedding. Jasmine sat in her room in front of her mirror, watching Rani fix her hair. She stared at her reflection, which showed nothing of her anxiety that she felt inside. She found her attention wandering to Rani, watching as she parted her hair perfectly. “Okay, turn toward me,” she told her softly. Her brown eyes searched for any sign of imperfection. Finding none, she smiled. “You look wonderful.”

Jasmine tried not to blush. “Thanks Rani. I appreciate it. You did a really good job.” She glanced one more in the mirror, and then smiled at her reflection. Everything was perfect: her hair, her makeup, her dress… But deep down, she felt a small aggravation inside of her, nagging in the back of her mind. She’d heard of what brides were supposed to be like, yes. But were they supposed to feel this much apprehension?

She sighed. She wished she could ask her mother if this was normal, if this was the way she’d felt before she’d married Jasmine’s father. Perhaps that was the reason she was so nervous, because she didn’t have a second woman’s opinion. She knew she always had Rani, but she missed her mother and the wisdom that came from years of experience.

“What are you thinking about?” Rani began hesitantly, jarring Jasmine’s thoughts.

“Everything,” she replied.

“Nervous?”

She nodded. “More than I’ve ever been. But at the same time, I’m excited.”

“I could only imagine being in your shoes right now. You’re so lucky. Most princesses don’t find someone that loves them like Prince Aladdin loves you. Most are just married for status.”

Jasmine stood up and walked out onto the balcony, making sure to stay out of the sight of the growing crowd. “I know,” she sighed. “I’m just worried, you know?”

“About what?”

“I don’t know!” She laughed a little, releasing some of her anxiety. “It’s just… I’m wondering what’s going to happen after today. I’ve known this day was coming for my whole life, and my dreams are coming true. I always thought I would have to marry someone I didn’t love, someone who just wanted the power of the kingdom. But here I am marrying a man I would give my life for, and I’m nervous about it! It’s like I’m not sure about my decision, but I know deep down that I am. At least, I think I am.”

Rani took the princess’s hands in her own and smiled. “Princess, you know you are ready for this. You and Aladdin were meant for each other. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect couple.” She sighed to herself. “All brides are nervous. You’re supposed to be! Just take a deep breath and you’ll be okay. You know this is the right thing.”

“I guess you’re right. It must just be the wedding jitters or something.”

“Of course I’m right!” She hugged her mistress and giggled. “Now, what have you two planning for your honeymoon?”

Aladdin paced the floor of the hovel, running his hand through his long black hair. It didn’t make any sense. He loved Jasmine more than anything in the world, and he was still nervous about what the wedding would bring. There were so many things to think about. The wedding would bring a lot of responsibility. One day he would become sultan, and he would have to learn how to run a city. He couldn’t imagine being in charge of an entire city. He didn’t have any experience with those kinds of things.

Genie and Iago were trying to give him some confidence. “Come on, kid, you have nothing to worry about! You’ll be great. I can even give you some pointers.”

He sighed. “I know. I’m just nervous.”

“You’re nervous! Why in the world would you be nervous? Because you’re about to give all of your freedom up, that’s why!” Iago shouted.

“Genie, I just don’t know if I can do this.” He said softly, looking at the ground.

“Aw… are you getting cold feet?”

“No, it isn’t that. It’s just I wish I had more to offer for Jasmine. You know what I mean? All I have is my love; she is rich and is royalty. Why would she want me for a husband?” He asked.

“Because, all she wants is your love.” He answered, being very serious. “Now come on, you’ve got the whole town waiting for you!”

They all rode off together and arrived at the palace with just enough time for Aladdin to get into his suit before they began the ceremony.

The sultan was carried in first, the guards holding the throne. Abu waved at him and he chuckled and waved back. Then next the bridesmaids came in. They were dressed beautifully. But they were nothing compared to who walked through that door next. Jasmine was beautiful from head to toe, her eyes shining brightly with happiness. This was her day. This was the beginning of her life of joy.

Just as she and Aladdin joined hands, a rumbling deep within the ground. Suddenly, a bunch of elephants stampeded into the palace, knocking and destroying everything in their paths.

Someone in the crowd cried out, “It’s the forty thieves!”

The guards rushed in and began trying to fight them off but weren’t succeeding too well.

Genie looked up and saw that the ceiling was caving in. “We might have a problem with leaks.” He said to himself. He stretched out himself under it to keep any more from falling down. But after a couple of minutes every bit of it, besides the section Genie was holding up, had fallen to the ground. “Oh well, I don’t think it’s going to do any good.” He decided to help the guards try to defeat the thieves.

Meanwhile, the king of thieves headed over to the place where the treasure and gifts were being kept at. He saw Iago and said, “Good birdy! Polly want a …”

“Say cracker and I’ll let you have it!” He shouted back.

But this didn’t stop the king. He stuffed Iago into a vase and continued with his search. Then his eyes landed on what he was looking for. He grabbed the scepter but Aladdin appeared and tried to grab it back.

“Let it go boy and you won’t get hurt!” the King yelled.

“Never!”

They fought back and forth until the herd of elephants nearly trampled them both. Aladdin still had the scepter, but when the dust cleared, the king was nowhere to be found.
