Izzie put a pair of oven mitts on and leaned on the counter as she watched the timer on the oven move agonizingly slow towards zero. What seemed like an eternity later, the timer let out a shrill beep and Izzie pulled the oven door open a crack to peek at her handiwork. She bent down and pulled the cookie sheet towards her, admiring the golden color of her chocolate chip cookies.
Meredith padded into the kitchen, barely lifting her feet off the floor as she walked. The pervasive scent of chocolate chip cookies had reached her bedroom and after a few minutes, she knew she needed a bedtime snack. Living with someone who could bake was both a blessing and a curse.
Izzie set the cookie sheet on the stovetop and looked up to see Meredith standing a few feet away, biting her lip. Izzie held her gaze, unsure of whether to hug the other girl or to give her the angry glare that she'd used time and time again that day. Meredith seemed to have everything. That's not to say that Izzie wasn't thankful for where she'd managed to get herself. Izzie just couldn't stand the fact that Meredith could do idiot things like get into a relationship with Dr. Shepherd.
It wasn't that they didn't trust her, because they did. It just seemed like if she were to put one toe out of line, even on something as trivial as not changing the batteries in her pager like Alex had, the game would be over.
Meredith analyzed Izzie's carefully guarded expression as she went to the refrigerator to pour herself a glass of milk. It was just as well that Izzie didn't say anything because she wouldn't have known how to respond.
Izzie nodded her head, grabbed a cookie off of the sheet, and walked past Meredith to her bedroom. She didn't think that they really had anything to discuss tonight. Maybe tomorrow but, she really wasn't in the mood.
Meredith took a sip of her milk and waited until Izzie had left the kitchen before going over to the sheet to grab a cookie of her own. "Good night Izzie," she said, even though she was the only one in the kitchen. There was nothing else she could do except wait for Izzie to come and talk to her on her own terms.
