Title: When nothing ever happens here
Chapter one: Changes
“What’s that Naota?” Eri asked, sipping a drink as she stood above her companion. Naota hid his pad of paper and looked away from her, slightly embarrassed that at his position, he could see clearly up her skirt. Eri didn’t seem to care.
“Nothing, absolutely nothing.” He whispered, his eyes closing halfway. Eri took a seat next to Naota and lifted the hat he wore, fiddling with his dark locks. Naota didn’t protest for a while, sipping the last drops of Eri’s super sweet drink. He relaxed slightly. Suddenly, Eri's eyes drifted to Naota’s notepad, and saw a sketch of Haruko, the “alien” girl who had left Mabase three years ago. She stood above a pile of machinery, a double stemmed guitar in her hands.
“You still think about that crazy woman?” Eri snapped, standing up, wrapping her scarf more securely around her neck. Her shapely long legs in purple tights drew away Naota's attention temporarily, but then he snapped back to his own reality world, drifting off from Eri again. Right now was a time where she wasn’t much of a friend…a friend who was a girl, but not a girlfriend. Not a girlfriend! It was only when he brought up Haruko…
“So?” He whispered, keeping his head down.
“So, what about us?” Eri asked, her hands clasping and unclasping. Naota gave her an empty look. He didn’t feel like dealing with this now. It was too…out of the ordinary and Naota loved things in the ordinary…not out. This was definitely out of the ordinary. It didn’t happen everyday…just some days when Eri would “take Mamimi’s place” and they’d look out at the river together…close…. She’d ask him what he thought of her…and only one word came to mind.
Nice.
She would complain that that wasn’t a legitimate answer…and that would be it. But that didn’t happen everyday…that was out of the ordinary. That was what Naota didn’t like. That was the bad thing…the…bad…thing.
“What about us?” He mumbled a little too harshly and tossed the empty drink can. He squeezed his eyes shut. Eri turned her back on him, running away. He should have known that she would do that. That was not out of the ordinary. He should have kept his mouth shut…but what’s the use?
‘Let her run…’ he thought. ‘She’s still just a kid.’
Naota lifted his head to the sky and felt a rain drop slap against his cheek. The rain started off slowly, and then pounded hard, but Naota didn’t move. Why should he? It wasn’t out of the ordinary. It had happened everyday at the same time…ever since she had left Mabase three years ago. Every day at precisely 4:12…it would rain for approximately four hours.
“I wonder if this is how it was with Mamimi.” He muttered. “Not inclined to move….no matter what.”
He let the rain soak him through for a while, and then sighed, his hair matted to his face and his hat weighing heavily to his head. He looked to the sky.
“Nothing ever happens here. Not since you left Haruko.” Naota stood and walked towards home, his head down in the rain.
“Naota! Is that you?” Kamon shouted gleefully from his office. Naota didn’t answer, he only walked along.
“Naota! We have a guest…she’s staying in your room!”
Naota’s eyes widened and he stepped quickly, anticipation building. Could…could it be? He threw open the door to his bedroom and slowed his breathing. It was her. The rain stopped immediately. It was only 4:20. Haruko sat on his bottom bunk, plucking gently at the guitar strings of the Rickenbacker 4003 she had left behind so long ago. She lifted her head, smiling lightly. Her yellow-green eyes met Naota's blue ones and silenced his rapidly beating heart. He noticed her bright pink hair was wet and dripped water onto his sheets. She had not come long ago.
“You’re dripping all over the sheets.” Naota said firmly, with coldness in his voice. In his mind, he wanted to hug her…welcome her back, but none of that affection would seem to come out. It wasn’t like him… She just seemed to sit there, as if nothing had ever happened, her eyes lowered.
“You’ve grown Tak-kun.” She whispered with her voice a little airy. Naota stood confused.
“I’m sixteen.” Naota muttered, looking for some sort of smirk to emerge on Haruko’s lips.
“Hmn. It’s really been that long huh? I don’t really know how old I am…19…56…4?” the smirk came. “But…it doesn’t matter. I’m pretty young…and I don’t think I’m capable of really aging.”
“You come to use my head again?” Naota asked dryly, covering his forehead. Haruko threw her head back and laughed wildly, kicking her feet into the air.
“If you had just listened to what you had just said!” She laughed, standing up and throwing her arms around Naota. The teen blushed and toppled to the floor, Haruko on top of him.
“Besides your slight height difference…have you grown anywhere else?” She smirked, her fingertips brushing the zipper of his jeans. Haruko noticed an ever so slight rise but Naota pushed her away, blushing a deep crimson before anything happened further.
“Quit it…”
“Aw Naota…I’ve missed you. I’m just looking for a little Furi Kuri.” Haruko sat on her knees, smiling widely.
Naota straightened his red baseball cap, which was getting too small for him and looked into Haruko's eyes.
“You shouldn’t have left.”
“I-
“-What happened with you and that Atomsk guy?” Naota asked casually. Haruko frowned a little.
“Ah, some things ya gotta give up ya know?” She paused. Naota didn’t seem to take this as a legitimate answer. She breathed a heavy sigh, meeting his dark blue eyes.
“I look at it this way Tak-kun…I could spend a whole lifetime chasing after someone that doesn’t want to be found…or come back home where you’re waiting on me. Sometimes you have an epiphany…a moment where it all makes sense. It took me three years…but I realized it Tak-kun.” Haruko stood up, pacing as she looked towards the ceiling. “I’ve got a special someone back home who’s in a hurry to grow up…and I don’t want to miss a second of it.”
“You talk like I’m still a kid and like this is your home.” Naota regarded her coldly. Haruko seemed to pay no mind. “I’m already grown up. You missed it already.”
“You don’t understand Tak-kun…wherever you are…that’s where I’ll be…and that’s my home.” Haruko pulled out the double stemmed guitar she had and strummed a chord. “Lil’ cheesy huh? Should make it into a song!”
“You’ve grown too. On the inside.” Naota whispered and blushed. Haruko pretended not to hear him, but really, his words meant everything to her. Slowly, she turned her head his way and then to the baseball bat in the corner of Naota's room.
“So…can you swing now?”
“Home? Okay home.” She seemed to murmur to herself, spinning as she walked her new blue bike towards Naota’s house.
Gently, she rapped on the front door. Kamon came out in an apron, and quickly tossed it off as he saw Mamimi.
“You’ve come back huh?” He smiled. “Naota-kun was quite upset when you left.”
“Tak-kun?” Mamimi whispered.
“So I assume you’re here for him. You know what they say…while the brother’s away…the girlfriend will play.” Kamon chuckled, his eyes moving from Mamimi’s skirt to her shirt, rapidly.
“I think you know well enough that was not our relationship.” Mamimi said coldly. She had never spoken like that before…but…people change. People get…out of the ordinary.
“He’s out at the park with Haruko.” Kamon said with a smile. “She’s come back as well…for me.” He laughed and shut the door. Mamimi shook her head. “People.” She whispered.
“No. She’s come to steal my Tak-kun. My Tak-kun!” She hopped onto her bike and pedaled towards the park, where she saw Haruko viciously throwing balls at Naota, who wasn’t wearing his baseball cap. Instead, Haruko was wearing it, smiling widely as Naota's uncut hair fell into his eyes. Mamimi observed him carefully. He hadn’t changed much. Except for a slight height difference, he pretty much looked and spoke the same way. It was like…he hadn’t even grown up.
“Haruko! Quit it!” Naota yelled, unmoving behind the plate. He didn’t even attempt to swing the bat as Haruko hammered balls his way.
“Ah, come on Nandaba!” Haruko yelled as Naota tried to grab his hat back from her.
“I’ve got to find him.” She whispered out loud and headed towards Naota's home. She knocked softly on the door and Kamon came to it in a hurry. He smirked when he saw Eri.
“Here for Tak-kun?” He laughed.
“Huh? It’s Naota.” She scratched at her head, her perfectly coifed hair falling around her face.
“Wow…two girls. My little boy’s all grown up!” Kamon jumped for joy in the doorway. “You can meet Naota at the park. He’s out.” Kamon lowered his eyes to Eri’s chest.
“Ah…thanks.” Eri crossed her hands over her torso and ran off quickly, her skirt swishing in the breeze. She had it all playing out in her mind. She would apologize, he would give her a tiny smile, and they would walk to the bridge together, sit…and maybe even…kiss? Eri smiled as she ran, but stopped immediately as she saw them. It was Naota and Haruko…together. Naota was chasing after the older woman, smiling. He hadn’t smiled in…in…forever. She could never make him really smile…maybe a smirk now and then…but never that much of a smile.
“No. no.” Eri whispered to herself. “She can’t be here.” Eri whispered. It wasn’t as if she hated Haruko…it was more of a detestation…an extreme detestation for the woman who nearly stole Naota away from her. When she had left…it was a sign of things going back to normal…and Naota and herself getting together. Now she was back, to distract Naota…to pull him away from her.
“Give it back Haruko!” Naota snapped, but didn’t’ stop grinning. Haruko looked back at him. It was like slow motion for Eri and Mamimi, who was also watching, but from the other side of the field. Naota let out a soft smirk and leaped towards Haruko, crashing into the older teen, sending them both spiraling to the ground. Haruko burst out into maniacal laughter as she held onto Naota. His face was pressed against her chest. He lifted his head shyly, a blush spreading over his cheeks.
“Ah…Naota.” Haruko chuckled and hugged her companion tightly. “I missed you.”
“Yeah.” Naota muttered. “Now quit it…you’re embarrassing me.”
“In front of who?” Haruko dragged him to his feet. Naota put his baseball cap on and gasped as Haruko pulled him closer.
“What are you doing?” He choked.
“Embarrassing you…Tak-kun.” Haruko leaned forward and pulled Naota extremely close, their lips hitting one another’s with great force. Naota didn’t respond to the kiss. He was too shocked…and so were the girls watching from the sidelines.
Haruko: Oh…that must have hurt to watch Tak-kun kiss me.
Naota: I didn’t kiss you! You kissed me!
Eri: grr…no Comment!
Mamimi: Oooh…Tak-kun…
Haruko: (glomps Naota)
Naota: Authoress… stop writing this crap and get back to the story…
Author: Ah…right.
“Tak-kun…” Mamimi trailed softly.
Naota pushed away from Haruko, causing the older teen to fall on her behind. He paid her no mind, staring at the two girls calling his name. Eri ran off immediately, and following, Mamimi, who was no longer wearing her regular school uniform, but a short blue skirt and dark blue tank top, rode off on her bike, murmuring Tak-kun over and over. Naota continued to stare in shock.
“What’d you do that for?” Haruko and Naota shouted at the same time.
“You pushed me! You’re so violent Tak-k-
“-that was Mamimi…I haven’t seen her in ages…and Eri…”
“OH! SO you and Native girl, AND class president freak…you guys are-
“-No!” Naota blushed. “I just hung out with them a lot. You know how Mamimi is and…Eri and I can relate…-”
Haruko boarded her infamous yellow vespa and revved the engine. “-Oh Naota…it’s been three years, but you’re still a kid.”
“How do you figure?” Naota snapped. Haruko pulled him on the vespa behind her, locking his hands firmly around her waist.
“You still fear change.”
Nothing ever happens here…. Nothing amazing anyway…well not since she left. It’s the truth. N now that she’s back…I’m not sure I’m satisfied. I like to have things closed…inside the ordinary…not out. Normal. Haruko is anything but. I don’t exactly like this…I feel something bad is going to happen…but hopefully not out of the ordinary. I hate out of the ordinary…meaning I should hate Haruko. Why don’t I hate Haruko? Maybe she is in the ordinary…maybe she is closed…but I-… No, nothing ever happens here….nothing amazing…
