Title: When nothing ever happens here

Chapter three: Lunch Time!

“Ah, lunch! It’s my favorite time of the day!” Haruko grinned evilly as she watched the clock in the sitting room strike twelve in the afternoon.

“Tak-kun! Don’t you have a lunch date to make?” Haruko smirked at the younger teen in the bathroom doorway who was currently struggling to comb out the tangles in his hair.

“This was a horrible idea Haruko…they…they’re going to kill me.” Naota muttered to himself.

“Then…I’ll come along and make sure that doesn’t-

“No!” Naota's eyes widened. “That…that’ll make things worse.” He whispered. Haruko slung her guitar over her back and looked Naota in the eye.

“What are you so scared of Tak-kun?” She whispered, deadly quiet.

“I’m afraid that things won’t work out the way they should. Things are already getting abnormal!” Naota exclaimed, still trying to rake a comb through years of embedded tangles. He finally gave up and threw it down.

“I can’t stay. I’m already five minutes—

“—Late. He’s five minutes late.” Eri sighed, holding a picnic basket under one arm as she stood underneath the bridge. A girl next to her with a blue basket put out her cigarette and cast a small smile her way.

“Ooh...are you waiting for someone too?” Mamimi asked while straightening her red long-sleeved shirt and black and red plaid skirt at the same time.

“Oh, uh…yes. I’m, Eri Ninamori. I have a lunch date with someone.” Eri straightened her own tan and white skirt and light blue T-shirt.

“I’m Mamimi Samejima. I remember seeing you around…I have a lunch date also…with someone I’ve missed for a while. His name is Tak-kun…hmm…Naota.” Mamimi smiled to herself. Eri gasped, dropping her basket.

“You’re waiting for Naota as well?” She exclaimed.

“Ooh, so you know him?” Mamimi asked. “Wait, what do you mean…as well?”

“He invited both of us for lunch with him!” Eri clenched her fists, as did Mamimi in realization.

“HARUKO-SAN!” they both shouted, and then looked at each other with grins.

“This must have been that crazy woman…confusing Naota. She probably tricked him into getting us both here so he could drop us!” Eri shouted. (A/N: Drop us…meaning dump the both of them. I didn’t want to use the word dump because they’re not really boyfriend and girlfriend…)

“Ooh…so what do we do?” Mamimi asked, pulling her lighter from her pocket and flicking it absentmindedly.

“I…dunno. I mean, you’re not my enemy. I’m willing to share Naota with you. The enemy is Haruko-san.” Eri smirked.

“Yeah, halve-sies.” Mamimi pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a puff. “Haruko will burn.”

“Let’s play a little…fire starter…my way.” Eri grinned, laying out the picnic blanket as she heard the sound of a familiar vespa in the distance.

“You’re going too fast!” Naota yelled, holding onto Haruko for dear life. Haruko’s bright pink hair fluttered wildly beneath her helmet as the bike hit a bump in the road and went spiraling down a hill. Haruko grabbed Naota off the bike as it crashed. The two went flying and hit the ground hard, both rolling down the grassy hill and high speed. Haruko held onto Naota's hands and laughed, skidding them to a stop underneath the bridge, where Eri and Mamimi waited, smiling.

“Oooo…sorry…I’m Oooo…late.” Naota wavered in his walk, slurring slightly as he regained his proper eyesight. “Is okay if Haruko eats with us?”

“Hmph. Yeah.” Mamimi and Eri shrugged at the same time. Naota noticed the two, standing close to each other.

“Look…I didn’t mean to schedule a lunch for both of you at the same time-

“-Naota-Kun, don’t worry…I understand completely. Have some sweet rolls.” Eri smiled sweetly, pulling Naota's head into her lap. Haruko’s eye brow went up and twitched slightly as she watched Eri shove a roll into Naota's mouth with her chopsticks. Mamimi took her turn in coddling the boy, stroking his dark brown locks from his eyes. Naota's cheeks pinkened as he swallowed.

“Hey…” Haruko pouted slightly.

“Try some sour candied eels.” Mamimi smiled ever so gently, and pushed her chopsticks into Naota's mouth. The teen chewed ferociously, trying to get a word in.

“Hey…” Haruko growled softly again. Mamimi and Eri looked at her innocently.

“Yes, Haruko-san?” They both chorused. Haruko paused for a long while before speaking. Suddenly, she whipped out an industrial sized bowl of extra-super-spicy brand curry and pulled the top open.

“It’s extra super spicy brand curry to the rescue!” Haruko laughed and opened Naota's mouth wide, shoving chopstick after chopstick full of curry inside. Naota swallowed and gasped, trying to break free from Eri’s hold.

“No! He likes sweet and sour!” Mamimi and Eri shoved more sweets into Naota's mouth, while Haruko laughed heartily.

“No! You guy-

Naota gasped, but more food was shoved into his mouth. Haruko whipped out a bottle of hot sauce, while Eri and Mamimi brought out a full bag of pixie stick powder.

(A Furi Kuri Moment)

Haruko: Pixie stick powder…there’s sweet…but where’s the sour?

Mamimi: It’s sour.

Naota: No, I believe that’s tart.

Eri: Same difference. We’re going to use it anyway.

Haruko: What…ever.

Haruko prepared to reopen Naota's mouth, when he broke free, spitting out the food.

“Yech. I need something to wash this taste out of my mouth. Sour, sweet and spicy doesn’t mix.” He snapped. Haruko grinned and pulled out her mild-curry brand curry bread.

“Tak-kun!” She smirked and tossed him the bread. Eri and Mamimi gasped, ready to take it away. Naota caught it and took a bite, chewing then swallowing thankfully.

“I don’t like spicy, sweet or sour better than the other…” Naota muttered while making it clear it wasn’t only the flavors that he was referring to. Eri and Mamimi sighed inwardly.

“Sure ya don’t!” Haruko gave a dirty smirk towards the two girls while grabbing Naota around the neck.

“Well, sometimes spicy things can overpower any other flavors…” Eri whispered solemnly.

“Yeah Tak-kun…sometimes…you’ve got to choose.” Mamimi looked at Naota with soft eyes. Haruko let go of Naota and regarded the two with a cross between sympathy and indifference.

“It doesn’t bother me tak-kun…maybe you shouldn’t have to choose. It’s all alright with me…as long as we can still have fun together.” She smirked. Naota looked at her and blinked widely.

“That’s surprisingly mature of you.” He murmured, his cheeks reddening. Mamimi and Eri fumed.

“We can be mature too!” They ranted, pouting. Naota was trapped. Haruko stood proudly, and helped him up.

“I have an idea Naota, let’s just get away from this craziness and go to the local hot springs. I’m feeling tense.” She looped her arms around his neck. Eri’s face reddened in anger, while Mamimi sat back on her heels, confused.

“I guess we could…” Naota rubbed the back of his neck.

“Well, I guess that’s it girls…sorry, Naota and I have a date with a bubbling—

“—Wait! We’re going too!”

“WHAT?” Haruko looked positively evil. Mamimi and Eri grinned.

“Naota, you ruined lunch for the both of us…I think that we deserve to go to the hot springs with you. ALL of us together. Unless, Haruko-san…you don’t want to go anymore…”

Eri grinned evilly. Naota sighed.

“I can’t refuse you…if you want to go.”

“Ah…” Haruko groaned. “But Tak-kun—

“—Haruko, you shouldn’t care anyway…” Naota gave her a dark look through one eye. Haruko fumed inwardly. She knew it was his way of payback, but she couldn’t believe he was still angry at her for leaving.

“Whatever.” Haruko jumped on her vespa without waiting for Naota, and sped off, leaving him to be glomped by Mamimi and Eri.

At the local Mabase Hot Springs

Eri sank lower into the steamy water, her cheeks pinkening from the heat. Mamimi did the same thing after putting her hair up in a bun.

“You think Haruko-san is gonna show up?” Mamimi glanced over at her clothes by the side of the spring to make sure her camera was still there. Eri stretched her arms around her head and grinned, her breasts floating on the water’s surface next to Mamimi’s. (A/N: god, how can I NOT make this sound perverted….)

“Maybe she’s given up.” Eri smirked and blew bubbled on the surface.

“Who’s given up?” Haruko smiled, standing without a towel on outside of the springs. “Sorry I’m late girls…”

“Standing like that where the men on the other side can see you is indecent.” Eri frowned, her cheeks reddening, but not from the heat. There was a loud splash as Haruko jumped in, surfacing with a loud gasp.

“Hnh…that really is hot.” She grinned, her face red. Haruko shook out her hair and put it into a ponytail.

“Why don’t you just leave Naota alone? Don’t you know how much comforting it took to get him back to “his normal” after you left? You’re such a jerk, and you’re only gonna leave again!” Eri shouted.

Haruko smirked, but her eyes showed her guilt.

“And what do you two think you can offer him?” Her voice was deathly quiet, and Mamimi shrank back a little. She had used to admire Haruko…and being angry at her over Naota was getting…trivial.

“Care…and Love.” Mamimi whispered. “You cant’ do that Haruko. You just…play.”

Haruko stood and wrapped a nearby towel around her body.

“You think so….” She murmured thoughtfully.

“I know so.” Eri said firmly.

“Alright.” Haruko grinned, knowingly. Sighing, she shook her head. “Then I’ll leave you to him.”

Naota paled as he heard Haruko and the other girls speaking on the other side of the springs. Now, he wasn’t able to relax.

“Then I’ll leave you to him.”

Haruko’s voice echoed in his ears and he tore out of the water, rushing to her before she got to the exit. He was panting heavily and dripping wet, his towel long gone on the mad dash. Angered and saddened, he hugged her tightly and looked into her eyes.

“I said I loved you once…and you walked away.” He sniffled. “Don’t do it again.”

Haruko nuzzled his head across her cheek and smiled.

“Eri and Native girl mean well…but they can’t love you like I can. I left you once on a journey to nowhere…and found nothing.” She whispered and pulled up a towel to cover his waist. Naota refused to let her go, but let her administer the covering.

“But…Eri and Mamimi only enable you to think you live in a town where nothing happens, while exciting things are taking place before your eyes…” Haruko pushed him away, but Naota resisted.

“I’m grown up now. Can I ride away with you?” Naota asked meekly. Haruko merely walked towards her vespa, still wrapped in a towel, and strapped on her helmet. She seemed to ignore the question.

“You’re still a kid Tak-kun….and you know why?”

“No! Why!” Naota shouted over the noise of the vespa’s revving engine.

“Because you haven’t had that defining moment yet! You’re destined for something great! Something over the stars wild! I’m not leaving until that happens!”

“So…we have a chance!” Naota smirked.

“I guess so!” Haruko yelled as she rode off, and tossed a packet of ramen noodles at Naota. He caught them and read the sticky note on it.

Because they’re not spicy, sweet, or sour.

Naota could hear the other girls talking on their side of the spring, and guessed they were glad Haruko had left. Shaking his head, he dressed and went over to their side. Eri and Mamimi smiled seductively towards them, but Naota didn’t blush at the situation.

“Wanna join us?” Eri asked.

“No. As a matter of fact, I want you both to stay out of my relationship with Haruko. Wherever it goes, it doesn’t concern you two.” Naota turned. “Especially you Eri…you’ve been there for me…but I don’t need that anymore.” He walked away quickly.

Eri stared into the spring water, clearly taken aback. Angrily, she slapped the surface, tears springing up into her eyes.

“Fine! I never needed you!” She shouted to no one in particular. Mamimi pulled a cigarette from the pocket of her skirt near the springs, but then didn’t smoke it. Instead, she lit it and let it burn on the pavement.

“Tak-kun…is one boy.” She looked at Eri as she cried. A heated feeling rose in the bottom of her stomach. “I think the tides have turned.”

Eri stared at Mamimi and watched the older girl brush a strand of wet hair from her face. At that moment, she had a strange feeling, but couldn’t bring herself to look away. Her cheeks went a little red, and she grew embarrassed at her own thoughts.

“I like your hair color.” Eri blurted, though that wasn’t what she wanted to say. Mamimi smiled and got closer to Eri, knowingly.

“Thanks…It’s dyed.” She fingered Eri’s dark locks.

“Maybe you’re right Mamimi…” Eri bowed her head slightly, her breathing rushed and audible as their bodies touched, then their lips.

“After all…never knows best.” Mamimi smiled and they kissed briefly.

“You think this is some kind of relapse over Naota? We’ve only known each other a little while.” Eri blushed, but put a hand on Mamimi’s cheek.

“Hnh…I like relapses.”

Naota: love is a very confusing and controversial thing. It comes in all colors, mixes, shapes and sizes. You can’t stop it even if you try…and I can tell you now…it’s anything but ordinary. So, when I dream about Haruko, Mamimi or even Eri…I don’t know what I think. I just keep dreaming…

A/N: Wow, it’s been a really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really long time since I updated. I apologize, and I give great Thankies to those who actually took the time to move their mouse to that little button down there on the screen, click and review! I love you guys! XD Oh, by the way…I don’t know if the Mamimi x Eri thing will last. Probably not.

Haruko: You kissed a girl. (Hee-hee)

Eri: Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

Naota: So…you’re over me now?

Eri: Eh…maybe I was never really interested in you. Maybe I was just trying to hide the fact I’m interested in girls, by hanging out with a boy of low social standards.

Naota: WHAT?
