My name is Harry James Potter, and I have no idea why I’m doing this. I feel stupid, talking to myself – well, I’m talking to a quill. If Dudley comes in, he’ll think I’m insane, but I don’t care.

Maybe I do know why I’m doing this. I can pour out my heart, mind and soul into this diary, an inanimate object that can’t talk back. It can’t say ‘Oh, Harry!’ in that heart breaking tone that makes my want to turn away and hide under a rock. It can’t tell me it understands what I’m going through, because it doesn’t. No one does. They don’t understand the massive hole in my heart where Sirius used to live. This is infinitely worse than Cedric – I hardly knew him. I didn’t know my parents at all, so I can’t really say they were taken away from me because I didn’t really have them in the first place.

Not that that matters to me now.

Why would it? I don’t remember anything before Voldemort murdered them. I don’t remember if James tossed my in the air like so many fathers do. I don’t remember Lily and James arguing over whether I was old enough to ride a toy broomstick. I recall nothing, and I hate Voldemort for that. All I’ve ever had was Sirius, and now he’s gone too.

Hermione says I should write about Sirius, everything I remember about him so I’ll at least have this, but I can’t. Not yet.

I will attempt to take my mind off things though, just for a while. Even I deserve that.

My Favourite Spell.

My favourite spell is the Summoning spell, Accio. It really is incredibly useful, and I wish I was like Hermione and knew it from the day I first saw a magical textbook.

Here are some things it would have helped me with off the top of my head.

In the Department of Mysteries I had plenty of time to Summon Sirius to me while he was falling. You can summon people; a boy did it in the Yule Ball. A simple ‘Accio Sirius!’ and his life would have been saved and I wouldn’t be sat here feeling as guilty as hell and talking to a quill.

I could have Accioed the Golden Egg when I dropped it, and the Marauder’s Map. I sure as hell knew it by then. I hate dragons.

That’s another thing, I could have summoned the Golden Egg to me instead of flying about. I am glad I flew though; my troubles vanished – just for those few minutes.

‘Accio Scabbers’ or ‘Accio Wormtail’, or ‘Accio Peter Pettigrew’ would have caught that filthy rat when it escaped our clutches. Ha-ha, I’m talking to a quill and I sound like a super-villain. Joy. Sirius would be free and wouldn’t have been stuck in that damn house and wouldn’t have come to the – OK, he would have, but he wouldn’t have been so eager to get out of the house. And Kreacher couldn’t have told me he’d gone. God, I loathe that house elf.

‘Accio Hermione!’ in the bathroom would have solved that nicely, but as I am rather fond of that memory, I’m glad we didn’t know that spell then.

Anytime I forgot my books I could have just summoned them instead of doing it the long way and being late. Magic exists, you know.

How about ‘Accio silver flying key’? I’ll admit that probably wouldn’t have helped unless I was more specific…How about ‘Accio blue winged silver key with one wing bent and crumpled?’ That probably would have worked.

I doubt ‘Accio the potion that will get me through that door’ would have done anything – I’m sure Snape is cleverer than that, although I hate saying it.

In fourth year when Ron was being an ass, I could have summoned him and then a simple ‘Accio Moody’s leg!’ would have helped me beat the sense into him.

I wonder if ‘Accio ferret’ would make Malfoy come zooming towards me. I must admit that it would be extremely hilarious if that happened. Must get Ron to try it some time.

When I get back to Hogwarts I could teach the centaurs the spell, and they could summon that toad Umbridge and use her as stress relief any time they wanted. I’m sure they’d be grateful.

And that’s why Accio is my favourite spell.
