Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

Once they arrived at the hospital, Yami was looking a tad better than he was when they brought him in. The blood was still on the corner of his lips from when he bit his tongue during the seizure, but his skin wasn't as pale as it had been earlier. But the doctors weren't about to take any chances as they wheeled the former Pharaoh into his old room in the ICU unit.

"I said I was fine, it was only one seizure. What are the odds of it happening again?" Yami asked, sighing for a moment as he looked up at the doctors. He hated being poked, prodded and everything else imaginable. Even if he did know it was for his own good.

"We don't want to take any chances, Mr. Moutou. You are going to be kept overnight for observation, and if there are no seizures for the evening you can go home. However I must warn you, no strenuous activity. This includes no sex." The doctor spoke, looking at both him and Seto.

"And your one seizure was two. You seized before after your allergic reaction, unless you forgot about that." A nurse added on, crossing her arms as she looked at Yami. She didn't have a problem with his life style. It was just his stubbornness and him not listening to his body.

Yami sighed, resigning himself to lie back against the bed. He wanted to know where Seto was, he looked over his shoulder but his fiancé wasn't there. No one was, not even Yuugi or the rest of the group. He understood that the ICU wasn't a good place to have visitors, but he wanted to see them. He moved his thumb over his engagement ring before closing his eyes. He didn't want to lose Seto again.

"Fine… do you know where Seto is?" Yami asked, staring up at the ceiling for a moment. He was afraid that he left him alone in this hospital, or worse… that he left for good.

"He's in the lobby right now with his brother. He said for you not to worry, he'll be back soon. I know that he means a lot to you." The nurse spoke softly, looking at Yami. She could tell that right off when she first met them.

"More than you know…" Yami spoke softly before closing his eyes. He figured that he had time for a nap before Seto came back. Besides, the doctors did say that rest was best after all.

The nurse frowned before walking out of the room. She had all the important information so she didn't have to go back and bother Yami. She did feel bad about bothering him now after all. Especially since he seemed to be resting peacefully.

An hour later Seto finally returned to see Yami sleeping on the bed. A very faint smile crossed his lips, but it was a smile nonetheless. He knew that the former spirit cared for him a great deal, and it showed. But he wondered why Yami was so afraid of losing him.

"No… Dartz, you bastard! You'll pay for what you did!" Yami muttered in his sleep, shifting uneasily under the covers. He was having the nightmare about Seto losing his soul again. Of course he said what he felt, not what he really said.

Seto frowned, sitting next to Yami on the corner of the bed. He brushed the former Pharaoh's bangs back gently. Now he understood, he was reliving their duel with Dartz. He could remember the look on Yami's face before he fell. He never saw Yami look so upset before.

"Yami… it's alright. I'm right here." Seto spoke softly, looking down at his fiancé. He held Yami's hand to reassure him of that statement. He wouldn't dare leave his side, unless he absolutely had to.

"Give him back! You have no idea what you have done…" Yami whimpered, but he couldn't feel Seto's hand on his forehead yet. He was still protesting against Dartz, and now Pegasus. Why did he all of a sudden have these nightmares about Seto being taken away from him?

Seto sighed, deciding to squeeze Yami's hand lightly. He really didn't understand it, nor did he realize that Yami was affected that much. The CEO knew that he himself was a wreck after Mokuba was taken from him twice. Well three times actually as far as he remembered. And then when Mokuba went psychotic in Death T.

"Koi, I'm here. Wake up… it's a nightmare." Seto started, still holding Yami's hand lightly. He moved to kiss his forehead gently, hoping something would wake him up from his nightmare.

Yami shot up almost immediately this time, feeling someone squeeze his hand before kissing his forehead. Needless to say there was a panicked look in the former Pharaoh's crimson eyes. He panted heavily, trying to regain the focus in his vision before turning to Seto.

"You're here… you didn't get taken away from me again…" Yami closed his eyes tightly this time as he tried to move forward to hug Seto. But he was held back by the IV in his arm. He sighed and lowered his head in defeat.

"No, I didn't get taken away from you again. Are you still thinking about that? It was months ago, I'm fine. Everyone is fine, no one is mad at you for that. Dartz was just playing a twisted game and I ended up paying the price. But I saved you, remember? If I didn't give you those 4,000 extra points then we'd both be lost." Seto spoke, looking at Yami for a moment. He rubbed his back gently, still trying to get him to calm down a little more.

"Be thankful it wasn't the dream I had last year. It took me a long time to get over that one." Yami spoke softly; this was still so uncharacteristic for the former spirit. He never got upset over things like this. But since he got sick, he had been thinking about fate a lot more than usual.

"The one with you nearly attacking my dragon on Pegasus' castle? That was a long time ago; I have no hard feelings about that now. Back then, yes I did. Just don't worry about that or anything else. I won't be going away for a long time." Seto smiled for a moment, hoping that helped Yami feel a little better.

Yami nodded, smiling for a moment. He just cursed the IV that was still in his arm, wishing he could go home and sleep. The former spirit really hated being confined to the hospital room with the IV running into his arm. Sighing he stared up at the ceiling again, trying not to count the dots again.

"I won't worry about that. At least not tonight, I know you don't want me to get myself worse." Yami replied, lying back on the bed again. He just wished that he didn't have these dreams as often as he did.

"Just rest. I'll be back tomorrow, and then you can go home. Don't be surprised if Yuugi and the others are there also. Of course they are coming on their own accord; I have nothing to do with it." Seto spoke, not wanting to let Yami know anything was up. Or that he was not pleased with Yuugi and Jounouchi's presence.

The next day

The day after Yami was admitted to the hospital, he was given a fairly clean bill of health after being held for observation. Of course his instructions were to have no strenuous activity, and to keep stress levels low. That would be hard enough with Yuugi and the rest of the tachi around.

"Mou Hitori no Boku! You're alright, and you're finally ready to go home!" Yuugi smiled once he saw Yami being wheeled out to the limo in a wheelchair. He didn't see the reason for it since Yami seemed well enough to walk. But he also wasn't aware that his other half wasn't coming home to the Kame Game Shop.

"Yes, Aibou. But to tell you the truth, I am not sure why they insist on wheeling me out when I am capable of walking. I feel better than I did yesterday." Yami replied, looking at the limo before directing his attention to Yuugi.

"Now we don't want to hear about you coming back here today. So that means Seto better keep his pants on and his hormones in check." Jou smirked, looking at his former lover.

Yami glared at Jou, thankful that Seto wasn't around to stop him from making a fool out of himself. Truthfully, the former Pharaoh would have done something rather nasty to Jounouchi. But the bad news about that prospect was that Yuugi was present.

"Funny, I should have said the same about you a year ago. You are just lucky that you didn't send me to the hospital that night. Or that I didn't report you, because everyone knows that what you did is considered a crime. It was not consensual." Yami spoke lowly, he never considered Jou a lover by any means. It was a one night stand that ended badly.

"I am so scared, Yami. What are you going to do, call your fiancé on me?" Jou spoke, turning to go back to Yuugi. He didn't have a problem with the smaller of the two, but he still had a slight problem with Yami. Especially since he failed the seme test that Jou did that night.

However now at this time Seto decided to appear, standing right behind Yami as he crossed his arms over his chest. The CEO glared directly at Jou, sapphire meeting with honey brown for only a split second. He never liked the blonde, and that hatred only grew after what he did to Yami.

"I thought there was a no pet rule in the hospital. I suggest you leave, Katsuya before I throw you out." Seto warned, putting his arms over Yami's shoulders. The look on the CEO's face could have scared anyone really.

"This isn't about you, moneybags. This is about Yami and our past, unless he didn't tell you that I was his previous boyfriend. Hmm…. And here I thought couples would tell each other everything." Jou started, looking at Seto.

"Raping him does not make you his previous boyfriend! You were just testing him, and that alone is not fair. Did you realize that maybe he doesn't like to be pressured? Or did that slip your tiny mind?" Seto asked, crossing his arms over his chest for a moment.

Jou just shook his head and walked out of the room. OK, so he wasn't really that mean spirited. He just had a few things to get off his chest, and damn it felt good. But it really was a lie saying Yami was his previous boyfriend, but he wasn't about to admit that he was wrong in front of Seto.

"Let him go Seto… let's just get ready to get me out of here." Yami spoke lowly, his normal serious tone coming back. He did feel better physically than he did yesterday, so that alone was good. But emotionally, he was a wreck.

Seto nodded, finally helping Yami out of the wheelchair and into the back of the limo. He waited until his smaller lover was in the back before he shut the side door. He'd go in on the other side, but not before dealing with Jou and the others. He was not done, not by a long shot.

"You are damned lucky, Jounouchi. Lucky that I didn't kick your ass earlier that is. Now if I ever see you around Yami again, I will be forced to hurt you severely. As for Yuugi, he can see Yami. Now can I get you to cooperate?" Seto asked as he walked around the other side of the limo.

"I'll cooperate, money bags. Yami's not my problem anymore. So you two go on home, but I'm serious. I do not want to have Yuugi crying over him because he got sent to the hospital again. If you two are going to engage in sexual activities, wait until he's better." Jou scowled as he walked toward Yuugi.

"Our love life is none of your concern! Now go before I have you neutered the hard way!" Seto spat before he got into the limo. Soon afterwards he instructed Jeeves to drive to the mansion, and away from Jou and the rest of the Yuugi-tachi.

Back at the mansion Seto helped Yami back upstairs, a smile crossing his lips. He hated to admit it, but Jounouchi was right. He too didn't want to send Yami back to the hospital for another sex induced seizure. That is if that was what caused it, and if that was the case… the CEO didn't want to think about it.

"Koi, what are you thinking about?" Yami asked, sitting up against the headboard. He managed a smile, although he remembered what the doctor told them. He hated it as much as Seto did, but it was for his own good. And until he was told otherwise, there wasn't going to be much going on.

"About a lot of things, Yami. About our future, our plans… and what we want to happen in our lives. Like if there was something missing." Seto replied, sitting on the corner of the bed.

"There are things missing in anyone's life, Seto. But what are you getting at? We have each other, and we have our health. Well partly… but you know what I mean. Are you suggesting something?" Yami asked, raising an eyebrow.

Seto blinked, looking at his smaller lover for a moment. What could Yami think he meant? He knew they were still in school, so parenthood was out of the question. And of course that would only happen through adoption. But then again… that was resting on the corner of his mind.

"Well you know we'll have to wait until we graduate before we even think about marriage. So that's not it, and we have plenty of time. But I was thinking of getting a cat, just a small little kitten." Seto spoke softly, looking at him.

"A cat sounds good. We'll think about it when I get better." Yami replied, smiling at Seto for a moment. Had he really changed that much? Perhaps his near death experience showed him how much he really meant. Who knows. But he knew that his lover could also change his mind in a split second.

Seto nodded, resting back against the bed. He was going to make sure that he wouldn't change his mind about this, but he rarely made promises. He just had to get over that if he was going to make a lifetime commitment to Yami, and he had to truly think over the meaning of the ring as well.

Notes:

- About Yami's statement. I know he didn't call Dartz a bastard, I elaborated a bit into what I thought Yami was thinking. I mean if your lover's soul was taken away and he or she was a lifeless shell, I know we'd all be upset.

- Death T. I have not watched the very first series before, with the exception of the 4th episode. So I don't know the whole deal behind the whole Death T thing. I apologize if I screwed up Mokuba's personality during that time frame.

- About the cat. You'll see what that will lead up to in the next chapter. I am still doing the whole Kaiba family trilogy, and the kitten has a rather big part in the whole thing. I'll explain it all later.
