A/N:

This idea popped into my head overnight and pounced on me when I woke up. Since then it’s just kept growing and growing until I absolutely had to write something for you guys. This is not the story I outlined in “Shadow’s Grief,” but it is a Dark Link-based fanfic. It might be useful to read Shadow’s Grief beforehand, but bear in mind that none of his friends have died yet and he hasn’t fought Link yet.

Disclaimer: I don’t own LOZ. I own my made ups. They know who they are, and so do you. The name “Eclipse” was Talin’s idea, not mine, and is used with written permission. “Shiia” I am using at my own risk because the name was Habuki’s idea and I’m just using it because it’s a really cool name and my fingers type it out whenever I’m talking about Echo’s fairy.

If you’ve ever played OOT, you know what’s going on. The real story starts while Link is in the Water Temple.

Warning: This will contain spoilers, so if you haven’t finished the game, proceed with caution.

“You should have told him, my lord.”

“Why? What does it matter?”

The Great Lord Ganondorf, King of the Gerudo Thieves, paced his throne room restlessly, accompanied by the leader of his Stalfoses, General Palebone. He had received word that the Hero of Time had entered the Water Temple, one of the most feared places in all of Hyrule and home to two of Ganon’s most trusted guardians: Morpha and the boy Echo, who Ganon knew only as Dark Link. Palebone had not been happy when Ganon had revealed Echo’s mysterious connection with Link, the Hero of Time. Even Echo didn’t know… but he would find out soon enough.

“You don’t want to get on his bad side,” Palebone said in a warning tone.

“If I didn’t know better,” Ganon snapped, voice eerily quiet, “I would say that you were indirectly threatening me.”

“Of course not, my lord,” Palebone said quickly, taking a step back. “I was just cautioning you. Many people make the mistake of underestimating Ech… Dark Link.”

“I’m not underestimating him,” Ganon said, sounding bored. “He will defeat the Hero of Time and then it won’t matter that he’s merely a shadow. He’ll be the only one and that’s that.”

Palebone didn’t fully understand Ganon’s logic on this matter, but instinct and long experience kept his mouth shut. After all, if… when Echo won the battle, all odds were that he would be angry with Ganon for veiling the truth. And if there was any chance that Ganon wouldn’t see the dawning of another day, Palebone didn’t want to eliminate it.

The Water Temple was always cold. Echo hated the cold, but the Temple was his home. Besides, nobody liked to complain to Ganon about the comfort of his facilities and risk an early demise. There were actually many things Echo could complain about, such as having to share guardianship with Morpha. If there was one thing he hated more than the cold, it was that stupid amoeba.

Normally, Echo wouldn’t be cooped up in this Temple. Ganon usually let him wander wherever he pleased, but today was different. The Hero of Time had reached the Water Temple. Echo had never even seen the Hero of Time, but he had already defeated two of the guardians, Phantom Ganon and Volvagia, and awakened the first three Sages. Echo wasn’t worried in the slightest about losing to the Hero in their inevitable battle. He had spent the last seven years becoming the best swordsman in Hyrule. There was no fight he could not win.
