Nothing Left to Fight For

"It seems, in your anger, you killed her."

He screams in protest, a howl summoned from the blackest depths of his being. He rages at the stark impossibility of it. He loved her more than life itself. He could never think of harming her. But most of all, he rages because, deep down, he knows it is true.

And in that moment, he feels a greater hatred than ever before. But this hatred is not towards Obi-Wan, or towards the Jedi. This hatred is directed at himself.

In that moment he despises what he has become, because for the first time, he sees that he has not become more powerful. For the first time, he sees that all he has become is a monster.

"What happened to me?" he wonders. But he knows the question is a mockery. He knows that this did not simply happen to him. He did this to himself. It is all his fault. He aligned himself with the Sith. He killed the Jedi. And in the end, he killed her, too.

But it is not merely her death he mourns, for with her has died everything he held dear. With her have died his dreams. With her death, his child has died as well. In losing, he has lost his very reason for being. By killing her, he has killed his own soul. Everything that was good in his life, he has thrown away.

And now he feels a new hatred, aimed at the shadow who deceived him, who tricked him into abandoning all that he cared about. He reaches out to the Force to destroy the shadow, as the shadow has destroyed him. As the Chosen One, his power has always been beyond that of all those around him. He should be able to crush the shadow, should be able to make him suffer. But he can not. It seems, st this moment, that his powers, too, are lost to him.

So the droids around him explode and the medical equipment is crushed, but the shadow only laughs, and remains untouchable. After a while, he is exhausted. His hatred and rage have died, along with all other emotion. Because, really, what is the point? He has nothing left to fight for. It is over. He has lost. Anakin Skywalker is dead, and in his place is only Vader, the cold heartless machine, created to do the shadow's bidding. He can do nothing but surrender to the shadow.

So surrender he does.
