Claire picked up her broken mirror and began to brush her long blonde hair out. Every few seconds, she hit a tangle. How long had it been since she brushed?
Aaron was in his crib, gurgling and shifting around, causing the wooden structure to rock slightly. It had been two months since his birth, and he was growing rapidly. A baby she had never wanted in the first place was beginning to be the joy of her life.
She found herself forgetting about Thomas and dreaming about Charlie.
At that very moment, ironically, Charlie came into her tent with a gentle smile. Claire felt herself blush and she glanced up at him briefly before looking back at the mirror.
“How’re you?” he asked, positioning himself behind her and gently taking the brush from her hand.
“I’m fine,” she said with a smile, watching in the mirror as he brushed through her hair. Every time he hit a tangle, she didn’t even care.
“That’s wonderful,” he murmured, setting the brush down and resting his chin on her shoulder. Both Charlie and Claire stared at the refection of them together, and both of them liked it. But both of them were too afraid to say anything, in fear of hurting their friendship.
“Yeah…” she reached up hesitantly and touched the side of his face, his beard rough against her fingertips. “Charlie…I want to thank you. Not just for saving Aaron…but for everything. I couldn’t of made it. Not without you.”
“Love, you’ve thanked me enough,” he whispered into her ear, his face inching closer to hers.
“I could never thank you enough,” she said stubbornly, turning her head to face him, surprised to see his face so close to hers.
Charlie didn’t know what else to do but kiss her. He was too far now to turn back. He pressed his lips against hers and wrapped his arms tightly around her thin body. He leaned over her. Now she was practically smashed between his body and the ground.
It took awhile, but she began to kiss him back. She raked her slender fingers through his hair and brought him in deeper. She was trembling. But so was he.
Aaron’s crying brought them back to reality and they jerked away from each other, like a magnet on metal, stuck together, itching to close in on one another again.
“He’s…he’s probably hungry…” Claire said, her voice shaking as she slid out from under him.
“Probably,” Charlie agreed, averting his eyes from her and sitting back up.
Claire picked Aaron up out of his crib and fed him for a few minutes, every once in a while looking over her shoulder to make sure Charlie wasn’t leaving. And he wasn’t.
Claire put Adam back down in his crib and buttoned her shirt back up. “Charlie…” she started, turning around. But when she did, he was gone.
