Summary: "They'd stood so close. She'd felt his every breath. She'd asked why."
He'd stood, feet shoulder width apart, hands buried in his jacket pockets.
But now…
Her mind throbbing, she fell to her knees, felt the sudden, crushing pain, and the warmth of the blood as it soaked her jeans.
Aching.
What had she done?
What?
Tears welled her eyes; each trickled down her cheek, stopping at her chin.
She stared at the wet concrete in front of her.
She saw the rain as it hit the blood.
His blood.
All his.
How had this happened?
He'd screamed, and she couldn't forget his words.
'I screwed up, I screwed up bad!'
They both had.
It was raining then, just as it was now. Raining heavily.
'It was the perfect opportunity,' he'd cried out.
'All the evidence would be wiped away'.
'No one would know.' No one.
Only them.
Him. And her.
Those were her words.
They'd stood so close. She'd felt his every breath. She'd asked why.
'You understand,'he'd said.
She knew what he held inside.
She felt it too.
Betrayal.
Her husband.
Colleagues.
Friends.
He trusted her.
Trusted, she wouldn't bail out. Not now.
Not when they were already too far.
Her eyes drifted to the revolver she'd dropped, dropped in the seconds after the first shot.
It hadn't been impulsive.
Not there, in the moment.
He'd asked her to swear.
Swear to keep the promise. To do what he asked.
She would, she swore.
Deep inside though, and well hidden, were all the things she'd never told him.
Things now, she never could.
She'd never known the right words.
She'd fought the feelings.
So often.
Too often.
It was too late now.
Seconds, and she could tell him
She leant forward, picked up the heavy revolver.
She used her thumb, pulled back the hammer.
Heard it lock in place.
Her breathing slowed. Her gaze remained unfocused on the bloodied concrete.
She lifted the gun.
Placed it under her chin, wedged the cold metal against her throat.
She felt her heart race faster. Set her finger to the trigger, and slowly shut her eyes.
One second.
Two.
Opening them, her eyes went to his.
He lay there. Gazed at her.
His blood everywhere.
Lifeless.
Her throat hoarse, tears filled her eyes.
"I loved you," she whispered.
Three.
Suddenly breathless, she pulled the trigger.
