Alex's Song

Italics are Alex's thoughts.

Bold Italics are the song lyrics.

Disclaimer, I do not own Golden Sun, and I do not own 'Gollum's Song' by Emiliana Torrini. By the way, you should listen to that sometime.

Dreams are not always what they seem.

He stood atop Mt. Aleph that day, dreaming, sighing into the breeze. The sharp gusts toyed at strands of his long, sky blue hair, making it dance upon the breath of the wind. It had tickled his face even more pale, as Alex looked out over the land. His face wore a calm expression, but his eyes scanned the surround with such perfection, such precision, as that of a hawk. Any second now, he'd see the lights of the lighthouses. Any second now, the golden sun would rise. He would admire its intensity, be silenced, speechless in its presence, feel its warmth on his cheeks..

Today, my lifelong dream comes true. Nothing, no one can stop me now.

Where once was light,

Now darkness falls,

Where once was love,

Love is no more.

How unusual. When I was ascending to the peak, I saw the light of Mars.. but now I see nothing. Why is it taking this long?

Alex flicked his hair back, narrowing his eyes. The light of Mercury was glowing at last. It made him think, however..

I remember the reason why I came out here. I'd been an apprentice to that fool.. It was purely my childish curiosity that which lead me to the book. No.. It was my destiny. I knew that one day long after my studies, I'd be here, I'd be powerful. I'd spent my entire childhood deciphering those tomes, and now at long last, it is time to succumb to my purpose..

Don't say goodbye..

Don't say I didn't try..

These tears we cry,

Are falling rain,

For all the lies you told us,

The hurt, the blame..

The light of Jupiter began to burn. Alex seemed fixated onto it. Hypnotized, yet pained. His eyes had only moments ago been keen and alert, but now they seemed distant, hollow, sad.. even confused to some extent.

Mia..

I'll never quite understand what happened back there at the Jupiter lighthouse. When you had been ensnared into that trap along with Garet, I didn't know what to do. When I saw how upset you looked, I just wanted to run to your side, to give you my aid.. I had worried for you. To help in what way I could, I healed Felix and his comrades in hope they would save you.. Yet, that Sheba girl.. I could feel her boring into my mind. She seemed to smile, although looking mildly confused, then darted back behind Felix again. She'd found out my infatuation for dear Mia.

I've always seen love as a weakness, that's why I never again allowed myself near Mia. Never let myself tell her how I feel. My destiny does not lie with her.

Still, how I wish I could have held her just one last time..

And we will weep,

To be so alone,

We are lost..

And can never go home..

Much to his delight, Venus ignited at last. He chuckled lightly to himself, folding his arms over his chest.

Mm, the memories there were hazy. I remember I had a ball of a time taking on that entire army, and defeated them single-handedly. Jenna was looking so distressed.. Poor dear, her brother almost drowned the second time. Speaking of Felix, I guess I'll miss him a little. I was the one who taught him his swordplay, after all, and he was the only one I could ever have a mature conversation with. It was a relief to us all when he washed up on Idejima.. Sigh.

Breaking him from his thoughts, an odd golden glow emanated from the peak with an angel's grace. Alex extended his arms out to his sides, and looked down at the rocks on the summit. He could feel its warmth, power, flourishing and coursing throughout every inch of his body, fuelling him with unfathomable power. In the heat of the moment, in pure, accelerating exhilaration, for his dream realized, he threw his head back and let out a cry of sheer, maniacal laughter.

So in the end, I'll be what I will be.

No loyal friend was ever there for me..

Now we say goodbye..

We say, you didn't try..

With tears of a thousand emotions streaming down his pale face, he slowly composed himself once more, glancing out determinedly, as if about to face the ultimate god himself.

He rose his hands into the air, body convulsing and brimming with new power, as he summed up all his strength to summon a storm of unimaginable proportions..

"Rise, storms! Rise up and unleash your might upon Vale and the foothills of Mt. Aleph!"

His lips opened a little as the wind bellowed silently, ominously.

"That's odd... I should have limitless power... So why can't I call up a simple storm?"

It was at that, Alex looked down, perplexed to see a shadow forming at his feet. Heart racing, he flung around, startled for a moment as he found himself staring at what appeared to be a floating rock with one large, foreboding eye.

"Wh-Who are you?"

Alex calmed down instantly, straightening himself and regaining his usual composure.

"I am called the Wise One.." Said the rock, hovering over the climax of Mt. Aleph.

"The Wise One? Vale's protector?" Alex questioned with a hint of a smirk.

The Wise One closed its eye, seeming to delve deep into thought. "You wish to have limitless power?"

"Wish to? I just got it!"

"No. Your power is nearly limitless, but it has boundaries."

"Nearly limitless? You speak in riddles. Can't you see? The power is mine!" Alex proclaimed, clearly furious.

"Yes. You also have nearly endless life. And your Psynergy is.. somewhat stronger."

"If you are trying to anger me, have a little taste of exactly how much power I have attained!"

Closing his eyes and raising his arms to the heavens once more, Alex's body delighted at the powerful sensations. He focused his mind, forcing the Wise One to reel back slightly.

"Look at me! My body is brimming with power!"

Dust. It went in his eyes, his mouth, into his hair as The Wise One returned the assault with extremity, sending Alex skidding through the harsh rocks.

"How? What's going on? I should be all-powerful! How can you defeat me!" Alex cried.

"You are not all-powerful, Alex. Your power has its limits, as does your life."

"This cannot be! Who is responsible for this treachery? Who has robbed me of my dream?"

"I, the Wise One, imbued the Mars Star with some of the power of the forming Golden Sun. It rests even now in the hands of young Isaac."

Isaac! The weak-minded fool! Why him, why! It was meant to be me!

"The heavens and earth are changing, Alex! You must flee now!" Said the Wise One, with utmost urgency.

"Wh-What!" For once, Alex's voice shook, losing his composure, dropping his façade.

"Mt. Aleph will soon be drawn into the heart of the earth! You must flee or join it forever!"

"Flee! I can't flee! I can't even move!"

That's when Alex realized.

..I'm done for..

These tears you cry,

Have come too late,

Take back the lies,

The hurt, the blame..

The earth shook violently beneath his weakened, frail body. Alex looked to the dark, unforgiving skies, to the clouds, like shadows riding the wind, a relentless swath of destruction that had come to haunt the inevitable. Trembling involuntarily, he swallowed thickly, gripping the earth desperately in his gloved hands. It would all end here. He would die here. He had never accomplished his dream of obtaining the Stone of Sages, he had never finished his apprenticeship training in Imil, he had never told Mia he loved her.. He would die in vain, and face the end alone.

Nevertheless, he continued to gaze upward, but saw nothing.. Just blur from his heavily watering eyes. He'd been so sophisticated and composed during his life; he decided that at the moment of his death, it'd be no different.

Mount Aleph crumbled with a deafening crack, pulling, drawing Alex into a seemingly never-ending abyss of darkness. He landed roughly on his back, and was instantaneously crushed by huge chunks of the holy mountain.

It was pitch black, not a single ray of light came through this far under the earth. Alex was entirely immobilized, and wailed in pain, despite the fact that no one could hear him. No one would ever hear him.

Images ran through his head. Of his apprenticeship training, of Imil, of Felix, Saturos, Menardi.. Of his mistakes, pains, sorrows. Of his dear, beloved Mia..

His lip quivered, and every last tear that he'd held back in his life began to spill over the rims of his eyes, and cascade down his bruised cheeks and neck. He gagged in between his heavy sobs, choking on his own blood.

Mercury, Imil .. Mia.. Forgive me..

With that, he lapsed out of consciousness and surrendered to the darkness.

And you will weep,

When you face the end alone,

You are lost..

You can never go home..

You are lost..

You can never go home..
