Prologue – The Book of the Magnakai

XXXXX

The Book of the Magnakai was the repository of the Kai knowledge of the first of all the Kai Lords, Sun Eagle. The discovery of the legendary book was the only hope for Kai Master Swift Blade (Braxus Stormgard) and Wild Horse (Ranma Saotome/Stormgard) if they were to resurrect the Order of the Kai. Both knew fully well that the book could be used to advance their own knowledge towards Kai Grand Mastership and also to transmit the Kai lore to the acolytes they have gathered at the Monastery in Sommerlund. With the help of the young mage from the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star in Toran, the trio had managed to outwit the sinister and powerful Darklord Haakon before he had the chance to destroy the book that would mean the end of the elite order of Kai.

The successful recovery of the Book of the Magnakai was a challenging and difficult adventure, testing their skills and abilities to the limit. It has almost cost the two fledging Kai Master their lives but with the divine aid of the elemental Goddess and magical assistance of Banedon, they prevailed against overwhelming odds which they could have failed any point during their arduous and dangerous journey. Swift Blade and Wild Horse were determined to continue the task of rebuilding the Kai Monastery so that the Order of the Kai might be reborn. The enigmatic elemental Ranko decided that it was safe for her to leave Magnamund for a while. The ordeal has caused her to question herself about the actions and motives. Banedon returned to the home of his Brotherhood in Toran, intending to continue his studies and improve his abilities.

With the Book of the Magnakai safely tucked away at the newly rebuilt Kai Monastery. Master Swift Blade and Wild Horse began their next stage of their advancement into the Kai ranks. Upon returning to Sommerlund, both Kai masters gave their solemn pledge to Kai and to those who where massacred, they would do what they can in their power to restore the elite order of the Kai to its former glory. To ensure that the security of the Sommerlund kingdom in the years to come would be protected as they were before the invasion of Darklords.

Three years later, three years of long and patient study at the Kai Monastery, a lot of things has happened over these years. While the young Kai Master from Durenor, Swift Blade garnered from the Book of the Magnakai the knowledge of three of the ten Magnakai Disciplines and imparted to the growing number of acolytes as much of his own knowledge. His adopted brother and fellow Kai Master, Ranma had somehow managed to learn four disciplines, how he managed to do so, he wasn’t sure but he had a feeling it due to his natural extremely high learning curve rather than luck. It wasn’t easy learning these disciplines as they had to learn the Magnakai disciplines by themselves. At least Ranma and Braxus were able to master the basic warrior skills known as Kai Disciplines. The studying on the Book of the Magnakai has meant that both of them reached the rank of Kai Master Superior but Ranma was quickly on his way of reaching the next rank of Kai Primate.

Master Wild Horse also known as Ranma Saotome/Stormgard had learnt four of the Magnakai Disciplines, he was able to understand the advance forms of Hunting, Weaponskill, Camouflage and Mind over Matter because he felt that these Magnakai disciplines were closer and natural to him in his experience. The Magnakai Discipline of Huntmastery and Invisibility felt familiar to him as his previous life, he had to resort to these skills almost constantly when he was on his training trip with his idiotic father in China. Although at first he was reluctant to use weapons during his fights, he had found it to be necessary during his adventures and had become quite proficient in the use of the bow and sword, thanks to the additional training with his adoptive father, Jerek Stormgard in Durenor and constant sword practice with his adoptive brother. The fourth Magnakai skill that he learnt was something he had picked early in his life and developed during his martial arts training which had greatly aided in his fighting skill. The Magnakai discipline of Divination was a skill that warns Ranma of imminent or unseen danger, or enables him to detect an invisible or hidden enemy. It gave him the edge in a fight, as he was able to predict the movements of his opponents and quickly plan a way of countering or manoeuvring rapidly in his mind.

Master Swift Blade also known as Braxus Stormgard had learnt three of the ten Magnakai disciplines which were the advance forms of Kai disciplines of Healing, Weaponskill and Tracking. The Magnakai discipline of Weaponmastery had made him quite proficient in the shortsword and bladed weapons. Pathsmanship was the advance discipline of tracking which he was able to learn quite quickly as his father would teach him the basic skill as a border ranger. This gave him the ability to recognise the correct path in unknown territory, able to read foreign languages, decipher symbols, read footprints and tracts even if they have been disturbed, and detect the presence of most traps . It also grants him the gift of always knowing intuitively the position of north unlike a certain lost boy. The Magnakai discipline of Curing derives from his mother as she was the village doctor/priest, Oriah Stormgard. Braxus was now able to treat common diseases, blindness and any combat wounds sustained by others as well as himself along with his knowledge from Oriah; he was able to identify the properties of any herbs, roots and potions.

They would have been taught by more experience Kai Lords if they were still alive but since that fateful day when all of the Kai Grand Masters were massacred. Ranma and Braxus had to rely solely on the book from their studies. The book contained the wisdom of the Magnakai where Sun Eagle, the first Kai Grand Master instilled the Magnakai disciplines into the warriors of Sommerlund. Following exactly or interpretation that was written in the book, they found that the learning the discipline from scratch was a hard and strenuous task, as it was both a test of physical prowess and mental fortitude. Ranma and Braxus both knew that the other Disciplines could not be learnt by study alone, and in order to fulfil their pledge to restore the Kai, Ranma and Braxus would have to complete the quest first made by Sun Eagle over a thousand years ago. The only few clues that Ranma and Braxus had, was recorded in the Book of the Magnakai, but the script had faded with the passing years and now only a few words remained to guide them. They both knew that it was going to difficult journey and would face great hardship and difficulties in the future.

Awhile ago, many of the narrow minded nobles and barons believed that a Sommlending would be their saviour in getting rid of the evil that lurked in Magnamund. They were in for quite a shock when they learnt that the ones that were responsible for saving all of Sommerlund wasn’t a Sommlending as they were believe to be but a half Sommlending Durenese warrior and oriental skilled fighter. What shocked the nobles and barons the most when they were rumoured to be the last Kai masters of Sommerlund rather than hired mercenaries. At first, they did not believe the rumours, believing them to be just simple fishwives’ tales but as more and more rumours came about, all of the Lords, Barons and nobles decide to find out at first hand when the opportunity arises in Holmgard where the ones responsible would be thanked in a special ceremony.

In Holmgard, the King of Sommerlund gave the prestigious title of Fryearl, the highest title anyone can receive in Sommerlund to the young Kai Master Wild Horse (Ranma Saotome/Stormgard) along with the powers and position that came along with the title. Though of such a young age, everyone who had worked with him knew that he deserved such a royal title. Kai Master Swift Blade (Braxus Stormgard) was knighted by the King for his part in saving his only son and heir to the throne of Sommerlund which after hearing the personal accounts from Lord Axim, Sir Rhygar and most importantly Prince Pelethar, everyone soon came to believe they deserved the titles given by King Ulnar.

King Ulnar would sometimes send his son Prince Pelethar to the Kai Monastery in order to receive additional training and tutoring. The king hoped that by doing so would improve his leadership and martial prowess and strength. He knew that Kai Master Swift Blade and Wild Horse were the best example of swordsmen and warriors in all of Sommerlund. He trusted them to make sure that he son would be safe under their protection. Prince Pelethar would ask either of the Kai Masters to accompany him on diplomatic missions to regions of Magnamund where he needed their protection and wisdom. Most diplomatic missions were pretty straightforward, but there were the odd few that required Ranma or Braxus’ Kai warrior skills to avoid a disaster or assassination attempt on the young prince. Although Ranma and Braxus thought that Prince Pelethar would become a wise and good king of Sommerlund, he was still young, courageous and enthusiastic, and had yet to learn the wisdom and even-handedness of his father. At least his royal status didn’t go to his head: he didn’t act like an idiot. He was more down to earth with the people around him and always kept a cool head under pressure; well, most of the time.

It was simply a matter of time before the Darklords of Helghast would strike once again into the heart of Sommerlund. Both Ranma and Braxus both knew that the war in Helgedad will not last indefinitely as the Darklords swore long ago to conquer Sommerlund and destroy it’s people. As soon as their civil strife was resolved the victorious lords of evil will turn on Sommerlund.

For now, the search for the Lorestones of Nyaxtor had already begun . . .
