Those Words

He doesn't want to go home, doesn't want to go back to work either. So he stays here. A few minutes, that turned into a few hours. Nobody's here anymore, nobody but him. He stays on the bridge, hands on the reeling, gaze on the dark water. The cold and biting wind doesn't bother him. His mind is elsewhere, too busy reliving old memories.

Everything is quiet and the night closes in around him, but in his mind it's different. It's full of noise. A car is fleeing on a road. His father is arguing with his mother. He's yelling and she's desperately trying to calm him down. They had been at a party and his father had been drinking that water-colour-like alcohol he likes so much.

Sitting behind his mother, the little kid doesn't say a thing. He lazily looks at the always-changing scenery. Silently praying that his popy would calm down. His gaze turns to his parents when he hears a noise he immediately recognizes. The noise that a hand makes when it violently comes across a cheek.

His mother is crying now and he doesn't like that. He never likes it when his mother is crying, so he says something. Just a few words to make his dad stop yelling at her.

And it works. His popy stops yelling at his mother and starts yelling at him. He's now pointing his finger at him, cautiously explaining him what he'll get when they'd be back home.

What followed is rather blurry. It all happened so fast; it is hard to remember now.

But what he does remember is the noise the tires made when his father pressed the brake pedal. The noise the front of the car made when it hurt the nearby tree. The scream of his mother when she felt that piece of wood entering her chest. The noise his father made when he passed through the windshield. They other things he remembers perfectly well are the blood and the absent gaze of his parent's eyes. Oh yeah, that's something that will be forever engraved in his mind.

He blinks a few times and he's back on the bridge. Hands on the reeling, gaze on the dark water. The cold and biting wind doesn't bother him but tears are burning his eyes.

He remembers the words he'd said to Clare: "You mother loves you. She knows you didn't want to do this."

Those same words he'd said to himself so many times.

Maybe if he keeps saying them again and again, one day he'll come to believe them to be true.

Maybe one day he'll fell better.

'It wasn't my fault. It was an accident'

He puts his hands back in his pockets and walks back to his car. Oh god, how he wishes he could have a drink now.

But he knows that he's just going to drive to his place and go strait to bed. Hoping that nightmares would leave him alone for once.

He smiles and in his mind, he's saying those words again.
