The Ballad of the Emperor's Fool

The most unresisting wit is murder,

A jest to please my audience of one,

My master's greatest medicine is laughter,

A corpse of feeling at my restless feet.

There was a time my sacrilege was sacrifice,

And I desecrated souls to see him smile,

But now the dark's a juggle I can't balance,

And black's become the colour of the fool.

My dignity is simple light and shadows,

Another prop to please my patron's taste,

But should he ask, I'd wear a jester's cap,

And beg for him to laugh, on bended knee.

Has my punch-line amused him?

Has my execution soothed him?

My haze of indifference proposes to ask,

And his smile's both an answer and a lie.

Once I was a fire, raging and inspired,

Until his cold hands extinguished my flame,

Possession's a victory of petty proportions,

For a ruler now freezing in the heat of my ice.

My dismissal is sudden, my unheard chains shudder,

A lingering joke from an Emperor's fool,

Yes, he tries to mock me, but his chuckle is bitter,

Because we both know this joke is on him.
