Shimmering Solitude: So far I’m keeping this story at a T rating...but due to Dark’s language...and some nagging by my inner conscience...I think I may have to up it a little later...Anyway it’s an AU, and the pairings are still undecided at the moment but, it’s yaoi, or shonen-ai, whichever you prefer. So if you have anything against the boyxboy pairing, then I suggest you leave. But so far I’m working towards a Krad/Dark, Dai/Sato thing. Read and Review, nee?

Prologue:
-
In this world that is governed by the supernatural, there are people who possess magical abilities, the ningen and the youkai. Ningen, or humans, have a very limited amount of magical knowledge as not all of them are able to wield magic, every ningen is born with a flame inside of them, but only a few of those flames stay ignited, and those people are called the mahoutsukai, the group of ningen that are able to use their magic. No one knows why the flames of most ningen burn out, but they do...usually within the first two years of their life.
The youkai, or demons, also have magical aptitudes but they’re more profound, seeing as they’re magical beings themselves. But because of their powers, the youkai population has threatened to take over the world, and kill all the ningen in the process, the only ones that stand in their way is the resistance force, the Teikou, a small organization comprising of ningen and youkai. And the base of their operation is the WeisenAcademy

Chapter One: The Weisen Academy
-
“Man...Why did they pick us to do this?” Dark Mousy sighed in aggravation. His violet hair swayed slightly in the wind, his beautiful amethyst eyes narrowing to further express his irritation. The teen shook his head and began moving around the debris of a fallen house, the fourth one that he had to dig up, searching for any possible survivors. “Be careful alright Satoshi? Daisuke would never forgive me if anything happened to you.”
Daisuke was Dark’s childhood friend, and ever since his parents died, he had moved in with Daisuke and his human mother, Emiko Niwa. Dark and Daisuke were both youkai, well Daisuke was half, as he had a youkai father and a ningen mother, in other words...he was a taboo child, and that little fact was often the reason why some of the others teased him. He was a taboo child...an outcast...but that didn’t stop Daisuke from making friends with Dark and Satoshi Hiwatari.
Satoshi coughed lightly as tiny dust particles found their way to his extremely sensitive nose. He coughed a couple of times, his sapphire eyes squeezing shut each time. “Daisuke-kun would never forgive me you mean.” Satoshi replied, smiling slightly at the mention of the boy, as he too began digging through a pile of rubble. “Well? Find anything yet?” He asked, ignoring the tiny red scratches that were beginning to show on his pale hands. ‘Damn. How could I forget my gloves? Well I could always conjure some but...I really don’t want to use any unnecessary magic...not when we could be attacked by youkai at any moment.’
“Yeah...but they’re all dead.” Dark said softly, giving the bodies that he had unearthed a pitying glance. He sighed, the village had been attacked by a band of youkai, and by the looks of things...the attack was caused by the Yuugure, one of the higher groups of the youkai populace, which meant that there wasn’t that big of a chance of finding any survivors. The youkai were divided into four groups, the Yoake was the lowest group, often comprised of ningen who turned to the youkai’s side and the weakest of the youkai, next was the Shougo, made up of the youkai that could wield basic levels of magic or those that had a higher knowledge of battle techniques. The Yuugure contained the more experienced youkai, and lastly the Tasogare, the elite, youkai that can control the elements.
Dark stood up and walked over to the next pile of debris, and once again began digging. Dark could tell that this was the remains of a park, judging from the charred leaves and the decaying pile of tree trunks. ‘A park...it must have been nice...’
“This is taking to long Dark. We were supposed to have been back a while ago, two hours to be exact.” Satoshi said. ‘Which means...we’ll probably get in serious trouble from our elders...no food rations again...’ Satoshi shook his head, he didn’t really care if he ate or not...but Daisuke would worry...
“Hmm? Sounds to me that you just want to see Dai-chan again.” Dark said teasingly. He knew that the blue haired boy had feelings for the boy...Satoshi was just too shy to admit it. “Huh? What’s this?” Dark asked quietly as a flash of gold caught his eye, he instantly recognized it as someone’s hair. ‘Oh damn...there’s someone here! I can feel a presence! It’s slight...but...it’s there.’ Dark gingerly picked up a boulder and threw it aside, revealing the pale flesh of a young teenager, a girl he thought. ‘Damn!’ “Satoshi! Come here! I found someone! A girl I think!” He called out in desperation and began trying to dig the body out. ‘Crap! This trunk is heavy! Ah...Screw this...I’m using my demonic powers.’ Dark’s amethyst eyes glowed, its purple hue growing darker, and a black aura began to surround his body.
Satoshi ran over as soon as he heard Dark’s call and stopped as soon as the other boy began to call on his powers; the wind had grown violent and started sending small pebbles and stones his way. ‘Damn. Has he no common sense?’ Satoshi swore mentally as he put up a small barrier. “Dark! Hurry up! Or your powers will end up attracting youkai!” He yelled, bracing himself as a particularly nasty gust of wind hit him.
“Right!” Dark called back, he grabbed the end of the tree trunk in both of his hands and pushed up, sending the wood flying. A spark of blue light flickered past him and surrounded the girl’s body, protecting it from the rubble that had been loosened when Dark removed the tree. “Ah...Arigatou.” Dark said hastily, quelling his powers, giving it the mask of a ningen. He knelt down and examined the girl, she had pale skin, very pale, and was covered in millions of tiny red scratches and small bruises could be seen here and there and she had the most beautiful hair that Dark had ever seen, it was a shiny golden color, like the sun. ‘She...she’s gorgeous...’ Dark shook his head and picked up the blonde.
“Is she still alive?” Satoshi asked, walking over. He examined the girl in Dark’s arms carefully. There was something about her...that bugged him...something...that reminded him of something...ahh...his mother...his mother had beautiful golden hair like the girl.
“Yeah...barely.” Dark replied, still in awe at the girl’s beauty. “Do you think there are anymore survivors?”
“No. I don’t think that there’s anyone else.” Satoshi said sadly. Youkai were so cruel...killing for fun, decimating entire villages...hanging ningen...He shuddered slightly...he couldn’t help but remember the demons that he had encountered as a child...they were covered in blood...He shook his head, shaking the images from his head.
“Yeah...well then...we’d better get going...I sense some youkai...” Dark murmured. He shifted his arms slightly, it wasn’t because she was heavy, no it was because she was so light...it was as if she wasn’t even in his arms at all...
“Yeah, and they might just come after us, after you put on that little display.” Satoshi snarled at his companion. His eyes scanned the area, searching for any signs of any danger.
“Hey! I did it to save her life!” Dark retorted. “Hey...why are we whispering?”
“I don’t know! Let’s just get out of here.” Satoshi replied, and light chestnut colored, feathered wings appeared on his back. All youkai had wings, so did the mahoutsukai, wings came in all different colors, but as to not draw any attention to himself, Satoshi kept his wings dyed brown from the seeds of a cocoa plant. His wings were usually a light bluish silvery color, identifying him as a water or ice demon.
“Just don’t jump Daisuke once we get home...back.” Dark said, a pair of velvety black wings appearing on his back. Black was a normal color for wings, so he didn’t draw that much attention...that is...unless you looked closely at them. Instead of feathers, Dark’s wings were made up of a velvety material, the same velvety wings that a dragon would possess.
“Like I would.” Satoshi said, scowling at the other boy. “That sounds like something we could expect from you.”
“Me? As if. I don’t swing that way.” Dark replied. “As in I don’t fall in love with cute little red heads...unlike a certain someone.”
“Urusai! Let’s just go!” Satoshi snapped, as he spread his wings, preparing to take off, a light blush creeping up on his face. ‘And I suppose he has a thing for blondes...blonde guys rather...seeing as the ‘girl’ he found is actually a guy...hm...Shall I tell him?’ Satoshi smirked slightly before flapping his wings, followed closely by Dark.
“Hurry! Don’t want to keep your boyfriend waiting!” Dark yelled as soon as he was airborne. His eyes squeezed shut in pleasure as the exhilaration of flying came over him.
‘Uh...I’ll pretend I didn’t notice...’ Satoshi shook his head and flapped his wings, enjoying the warm thermals...easy flying. “Right.” He answered. He couldn’t wait until Dark realized that he was carrying a guy, not a girl.
The wall itself was magic-made and it overlooked a grassy plain that marked the Weisen’s territory. Around the edge of the plain was a barrier that protected the Academy from any youkai attacks and kept everyone and everything inside of it invisible. The barrier was only in affect once the sun went down, and it went off when the sun was in the sky. So if you weren’t inside the plain’s edge by nightfall you were locked out of the Academy for the night, which is why not many people strayed past the border.
“Kyuu...” Wiz nuzzled against Daisuke’s cheek comfortingly. He couldn’t understand what the boy was saying but he did sense the emotions that radiated from his heart. He gazed up at Daisuke in wonder...what was causing his master to be so lonely? And where were those two friends of his? The blueberry and the grape(1)? “Kyuu kyuu!”
“You’re right Wiz. They probably didn’t get into any trouble.” Daisuke said, a smile finally making its way onto his face. “But I wish that they’d hurry...the sun’s going down soon...”
“Kyuu?” Wiz sighed. He was bored and Daisuke didn’t seem to want to play with him.
“Hey Niwa!”
Daisuke turned around when he heard his name. “What is it Kimiko-kun?” Daisuke asked. Naruya Kimiko was the leader of a group of people that loved to tease him, because of his heritage.
“Where are your two boyfriends? They finally got tired of hanging around with you?” Naruya sneered. He had jet black hair and dark brown eyes, and his clothes were anything but modest. The shirt he had on was unbuttoned and his pants were tight enough that you could see every muscle on his legs.
“Dark and Satoshi-kun are out scouting right now.” Daisuke replied nervously. His eyes blinked in worry, whenever Naruya cornered him he was with his gang but Dark and Satoshi were always there to help him out.
Wiz, who was on Dai’s shoulders, hissed softly, he did not like the boy that was standing in front of the red head...something about him had a sinister feeling to it.
“Ah. That’s right they’re the best aren’t they? The two youkai elementals.” Naruya continued, giving Daisuke an evil glare. “And you...the half breed...” He shoved Daisuke against the wall, his head hanging over the edge. “How is it...that something so scrawny could be an elemental?”
“L-let go!” Daisuke yelled, as Naruya’s hands fastened themselves around his neck. ‘How much more can I take? How much more...until...I’ll lose control?’
“If you’re so tough...why don’t you ever fight back?” Naruya asked, glaring at the boy under him.
‘I-I don’t want to fight him...if I do...I’ll kill him.’ Daisuke groaned as a small pebble dug into the nape of his neck. ‘Just like...that last time...’
“Oi! Get the hell off him!” Dark yelled as he and Satoshi raced through the barrier. Dark’s eyes were gleaming with anger, no one ever messed with Daisuke...ever.
“Dark.” Satoshi said, holding a hand out stopping the violet haired boy. “He’s mine.” Satoshi’s eyes narrowed and a smirk appeared on his face.
Dark looked slightly taken aback. Satoshi never fought anyone...ever. “Hmph.” Dark smirked. ‘I guess he’s more in love with Dai then I thought’ “I’m taking her to Emiko alright?” He asked as Satoshi prepared to land on the wall’s edge.
“Hai. I’ll make this quick.” Satoshi sneered at Naruya and pointed a finger at him. A pale blue light started to gather around his finger.
“Hehe...I’d run if I were you!” Dark hollered as he flew away, waving happily as he headed to Emiko’s house. When Satoshi was mad...well...you just wouldn’t want to see him mad.
Naruya slowly retracted his hands from around Daisuke’s neck, there was no way that he messing with the red head when Satoshi was there. He shoved the boy over the wall and high-tailed it.
Satoshi’s eyes widened as he saw Daisuke fall, after firing a basic magic spell he dove after Daisuke, catching him effortlessly. “It’s alright Dai-chan...Don’t worry.” Satoshi said, caressing the boy’s hair in a comforting manner. Daisuke was going through a series of spasms, his eyes dilated, breathing labored. “Calm down I’m here...” Satoshi cooed. ‘Did I just coo? I never coo! But this is Daisuke...why won’t he breathe right?’
“No more...no more...” Daisuke growled, his body shaking terribly.
“Daisuke...shh...” Satoshi said desperately. ‘What going on with him?’
(1) Wiz, because of Dark and Satoshi's hair color, perceives them as fruit. That adorable little glutton! XD
