Happy

"How do you like it?" Mayu asked, the hint of a nervous blush standing out like rouge on her cheekbones. He smiled gently, reaching out to stroke the newly-cut hair that feathered above her jaw. She placed her hand over his, pressing it to her cheek.

Hatori leaned forward and brushed her forehead with his lips. "I have to get back to work."

Taking his hand in hers, she pulled away and glanced up at him coyly through her eyelashes. "Souma-sensei, do your patients know that you lunch in your office with your girlfriend in private?"

Completely straight-faced, he teased her. "I have a girlfriend?"

She laughed, and it was a musical, light-hearted sound that lit up the sober atmosphere of the doctor's office. He smiled again, making her heart flutter on the wings of a thousand butterflies. Mayu's face was hot, and she affected a serious expression, reaching forward to straighten his tie as if it needed it. Hatori held still and let her, hands resting in his pockets. "Dinner tonight?" Mayu smoothed her hand down the length of the silk, not unconscious of the muscular chest over which her palm was gliding. She nodded. He took her hand and gave it a squeeze. "I'll see you then." She leaned up on tip-toe to press a kiss to his cheek before tripping lightly from the room.

Mayu took a deep breath of the crisp autumn air as she stepped outside. She would never say she was glad for what had happened to end Hatori's acquaintance with Kana, but everyone deserved to be happy, didn't they? Driving home, she smiled to herself. Within her breast, a chrysalis born of loneliness and years of waiting cracked open to emit a precious warmth and light. It was all right to be happy.
