I've never written a Teen Titans story before, so please do not expect a great work.

The Colors of Love

PG

Disclaimer: I don't own TEEN TITANS.

One day at Titans Tower, Starfire was watching a movie.

"Earth schools are horrible," she commented. "Why would one living creature wish to emotionally harm another?"

"Because that's how girls can be sometimes," said Raven, looking up from her book. "Hence the name Mean Girls."

"It makes me sad," said Starfire. "Yet this movie is of the…romantic-comedy genre?"

"Ugh, I can't deal," said Raven. She got up and went to her room.

"Dudes! You'll never guess whose invited to the Titans East Tower tonight!" exclaimed Beast Boy, from out of nowhere.

"Is it you, Beast Boy?" gasped Starfire.

"Uh…yeah! Well, all of us actually," said Beast Boy.

Cyborg came up behind him and said "They're having a party and want us to come. They even said to bring a date…Star!" Starfire blushed, thinking of Robin.

"Hey guys, what's going on?" asked Robin, who just happened to be walking in at that moment.

"We have been invited to attend an event of dancing, music and festivities at our friends' home on the east side of the city!" said Starfire.

"So…we're going to a party at the Titans East Tower?" said Robin, simplifying Starfire's sentence.

"Yeah! And you're supposed to bring a date!" said Beast Boy, nudging Robin in the ribs.

"Then I guess you better go underground and find Terra!" said Robin, elbowing Beast Boy right back.

"Terra? No! I-" Beast Boy looked around. It was just him, Robin, Cyborg and Starfire. "Hehehh, naw, I'm over Terra."

"Of course you are, Beast Boy. We are all over her. She is underground!" said Starfire. Everyone else just groaned and rolled their eyes.

"Where's Raven?" asked Cyborg.

"She is most likely in her room. Someone should inform her of our plans for the evening!"

"I'll do it!" said Beast Boy.

"Uh, maybe you'd better not," said Robin.

"Someone has to," said Beast Boy. "and I don't have as far to drop." And off he went to Raven's room.

"What did our friend mean by 'don't have as far to drop'?" asked Starfire, using a contraction for once in her life (even though it was just quoting someone else).

"I think he meant that if he pisses her off…she already hates him," said Cyborg. Starfire gasped in shock.

"Raven does not hate Beast Boy!"

"Chill, Star! I's just exaggerating!"

"…Please. What is…exaggerating?"

"It means making things seem bigger than they really are," said Robin. "Of course Raven doesn't literally hate Beast Boy. But she does find him annoying."

"Oh, I see. So if I were to exaggerate, I could say that I…ADORE the tangy, yellow beverage of mustard!"

"…yeah…good job," said Robin. Everyone already knew that Starfire loved mustard.

Meanwhile, Beast Boy was at Raven's door. He knocked three times. Raven opened the door ajar, and revealed only one of her eyes and half of her face.

"What?" she said dryly.

"Um, heh heh! We're invited to Titans East Tower tonight. They're having a party. Just thought I should tell you, heheh!"

"Oh. Thanks," said Raven. She stopped in mid-shut of the door and said "So…Aqualad will be there?"

"Uh, yeah."

"Okay, I'll go." And she shut the door. Beast Boy sighed. He had forgotten that both Raven and Starfire had developed huge infatuation over Aqualad.

"But you're supposed to bring a date,"

Back in the living room, Robin was arguing with Cyborg.

"I just don't think you should invite Jinx!" he said.

"Why not? This wouldn't be the first dance we've gone to together," said Cyborg.

"But…she…uh…why don't you just dance with Bumble Bee?" said Robin.

"Because I don't like her that way, Man!" said Cyborg. "What's wrong with Jinx, anyway?"

"She's our enemy! That would be like…Starfire going out with Rancid!" said Robin. Starfire's eyes widened.

"She's not so bad. Besides, if we're hanging out with no strings attached there's no reason we'd have to fight her."

"Cyborg…I really just think you should go with Bumble Bee," Robin insisted.

"Why?"

"Because," Robin stuttered. "Because she's a Titan! You should date someone who's on our side-"

"It's because we're both black, isn't it?" said Cyborg. That shut Robin up…temporarily.

"Uh, no, not at all-"

"Admit it, Rob'," said Cyborg. "that's the only reason you think Bee and I should be together; we're both black!" Robin was speechless as Cyborg got up and left.

"Whoa…" said Robin.

"But…Cyborg is not black," said Starfire. "He is brown. And sliver…and white and blue!"

"No Starfire," said Robin. "Before he was part robot. Even now, he's black. That's just the term for Africans. Like, I'm white. So is Beast Boy, and I guess Raven, too."

"Then I am…orange?" asked Starfire.

"No. You're Tamaranian," said Robin. "But on Earth…uh…well…"

"And Beast Boy is not white either. He is clearly green."

"No, Star, let me explain," said Robin. "I'm white. Cyborg is black. Beast Boy was once white. Raven is only half-human, but her mother was white…so, technically she's white. You're Tamaranian. Jinx is actually Indian, but she wears a lot of make-up."

"So Cyborg cannot dance with Jinx because they have different skin colors?" asked Starfire. Robin gulped.

"No. They can dance if they want. Race doesn't matter, remember?" Starfire looked down, remembering the name Val-Yor called her.

"Are there names for other colors of people…like TROQ is for Tamaranians?" she asked hesitantly.

"You better believe it," said Robin. "But you should never say them." He whispered a few into Starfire's ear. "And the one for black people you should never, ever say is…" And he whispered it in her ear.

"I see. Thank you, Robin," she said, smiling.

In Cyborg's room, he was looking for a bow-tie. "Stupid, ignorant Robin!" he muttered. "Doesn't even realize he's being racist!" Then there was a knock on the door. "Come in," he said.

"Um, hey Cyborg," said Robin.

"Hi."

"I…just wanted to apologize. You were right; the only reason I wanted you to be with Bumble Bee is because you two are both black."

Cyborg was silent.

"But, since that's old-fashioned…I just want to say, I'm sorry I tried to get you to be with someone you didn't even like."

"Ah, it's not your fault, Robin," said Cyborg. "It's just branded onto your subconscious. It's just like…assumed that the two black people would be together. Even today, in this free country, inter-racial couples are considered weird. Even though everyone knows there's nothing wrong with them."

"Yeah, but it was still wrong of me to say what I said."

"Forget it, Man," said Cyborg. "So, how do I look?" He had his bow-tie on.

"You look great. Come on, we don't want to be late!"

So they all piled into the T-Car, and drove to Titans East Tower. Much to their surprise, the Hive Five had been invited and were already there.

"Hey guys!" Speedy greeted them at the door. "Come on in! Glad you could make it!" Everyone was on the dance floor, under the disco ball.

Later that evening, a slow-dance song started. Raven and Starfire were leaning against the wall. Robin came up to Starfire.

"Um…want to dance, Star?" he asked, holding out his hand.

"Oh yes! I would be overjoyed to dance with you!" shrieked Starfire. She eagerly accepted. They danced parallel from Cyborg and Jinx, who were on the other side of the dance floor, and looked happy to be together.

Raven looked at Aqualad dancing with Bumble Bee, and sighed. She liked him, but she had to admit she didn't know him that well. If they did dance together, what possible emotional connection would be behind it? She was about to slink off somewhere alone, when Beast Boy came up to her and said

"Want to dance?"

"Not really," said Raven. Beast Boy's expression changed from hopeful to disillusioned. Then Raven grabbed his arm. "But…I will," she added. Removing her hood so that Beast Boy could see her smile, she walked out onto the dance floor with him.

Starfire with Robin, Jinx with Cyborg, and Raven with Beast Boy. The night was young, and they all happily danced it away.
