Chapter 1: If only it were true

To love is to be vulnerable...C.S. Lewis

He walked slowly to Tyson's dojo, staring lifelessly at the street that lay before him. He wondered vaguely if the tournament was still going on. They had come from Italy all the way to Japan.

'Hiromi is going to be ok.' he thought, 'She has to be ok. Tomorrow when we visit her she'll be frowning at everyone for fussing over nothing.'

The whole trip had been a blur for him. It was as if he had been watching a movie. The world at that moment seemed to have stopped and was nothing more than a canvas drawn upon with pastels. The cold night wind ruffled his hair teasing the locks that fell over his face, hiding the dead amethyst eyes from the world. His light footfalls echoed in the cold deserted night.

He chuckled sadly. It was a nightmare. That was it! Just a bad dream and nothing more, Hiromi was fine. She had to be fine. She would be fine. Everything had been a dream, a surreal moment in the tournament. At this moment they were in the hotel. All of them sleeping and she, she was safe and sound asleep in her room. She wasn't in the hospital; no it was just his imagination.

Yes that was it. He was dreaming. He was dreaming and it would soon end with the morning rays. He would wake up and find his team. But most importantly he would see her cheering him and everyone else on in battle. Yeah she would be there clean and happy. She wouldn't be dirty and bloody, no of course not that was in his dream.

Tears stung the back of his lids as he closed his eyes. It just couldn't be true. He didn't want to believe it. No. He wasn't going to believe it. It was all one sick cruel joke by someone that wanted to hurt them. Apparently they had succeeded. G-revolutions was no longer in the tournament.

He opened his eyes and lifted his gaze to the vast glittering firmament, his scarf flowing in the chilly wind.

Why…

He continued on his way to the dojo, walking painfully slow. It was just a nightmare, just a nightmare and nothing more. He subconsciously crossed his arms as he lowered his gaze to the concrete. He shook his head lightly as he once again stared dead ahead. It was just a dream. He was living in a nightmare that was all.

Tell me this isn't true…

His feet carried him to the dojo, as soft sobs broke his reverie. He had arrived and was standing in front of the house door.

No…

He felt his tears return as realization hit him like a tidal wave. He couldn't deny it anymore. He entered the dojo. It seemed that no one cared. No one bothered to look in his direction. Walking softly inside, he heard the soft sobs once more and froze like a deer caught in the headlights of a truck.

Please don't let it be…

Turning slowly to his right he saw her, him, and the rest of the team along with Stanley Dickenson. The rest of the team turned to look at him, yet his gaze remained on the couple. Her cheeks stained with the misery she felt. Her light brown hair was tied in a ponytail. Her grey eyes full of pain and sorrow looked at him.

He couldn't breathe and just stood frozen on the spot. He, he stood there sitting next to his wife, his ruby eyes glimmering with tears. He hadn't even bothered to look at him. His black hair was mussed due to the many times he had passed his hands through it in exasperation.

I'm sorry

They were in pain. The rest of the team just sat there unmoving with tear streaked cheeks. The events of the day replaying in their memory like a video.

He stared at the couple, at her parents. He closed his eyes as his tears finally made their way down his pale cold cheeks. He hadn't been able to do anything

I wasn't even able to save her…
