The Past and the Present IPart I
Getting Together“Starfire, I don’t know how to say this but…I love you. Do you love me too?” The words hit her with such a great impact that she just sat there, stunned. She didn’t know how to react, or what to say. She had loved Robin for as long as she could remember, and this was something like a shock to her, for the alien girl was not really acquainted with love as an emotion.
She looked up into his face, full of hope and expectancy at her answer. She took his hand in his and said, “The feeling is mutual, Robin. I have never loved anyone else but you.”
Part II Being TogetherStarfire and Robin walked in the park, holding hands. The twilight atmosphere was really romantic, and the enjoyed the serenity of it. After walking around, they sat down on a bench. First dates were almost always the worst, but it had been perfect for the two lovebirds.
Starfire snuggled into Robin’s arms. “Robin, I love you.” “Star, you know that I do too.” So saying, he drew out a long slender box from his pocket. He opened it, to reveal a beautiful golden necklace, with a sparkly green stone for a pendant. She let out a squeal of excitement. “Robin, it is beautiful,” she exclaimed, as he fastened it around her neck. “Nothing but the most beautiful jewelry for the most beautiful girl I know,” he replied, smiling.
Starfire fingered the chain, her heart thumping joyfully. She vowed to herself to wear the chain forever. “Robin, can you love me forever?” she asked tentatively. Robin cuddled her. “I’ll never stop loving you, Starfire.”
Part IIILosing “Together”
“What do you mean you want to break up?” wailed Starfire, tears rolling down her cheeks. Robin twisted the end of his shirt uncomfortably. :It’s not that I don’t love you anymore Star, it’s because I have to go on a long journey and I think it would be best if we just ended the relationship now. Relationships over a hundred miles don’t work out, Star,” he replied sadly.
Starfire sniffed. “Can you not cancel this journey?” she asked. He shook his head. “I can’t, no matter how much I don’t want to. Batman says a good long journey should give me lots of experience and that’s essential for every young man.” She didn’t say anything. Robin took her hand.
“Star, don’t be like this. When I come back after two years, we can get together again,” he pleaded, cajoling her. She yanked her hand away. “Starfire?”
She stood up. “Fine Robin. I don’t care anymore. Go where you wish.” She made to go out, but Robin took her hand again. “ Starfire, don’t be like this. You know that I care and love you more than anything else. I just don’t want you to be disappointed if our relationship doesn’t work out while I’m away,” he pleaded again.
She suddenly cried out, “If you really love me so much, you would not leave me alone or at least go away for so long!” Robin sighed. “Starfire, Batman says…” She cut him short. “Batman says this, Batman says that! Batman is more important than me, you selfish glorbagh!” she yelled. Robin finally lost it. “Well, I don’t care anymore then, I want to go on this journey and you just won’t understand how important this is to me. You’re the selfish one Starfire, we’ve shared so much together and now when it gets hard, you just bail!” he screamed. Starfire screamed back, “Well, before you go, take this back then!” With that, she flung the golden necklace he had given her at his face and stormed out of the room.
Starfire never saw Robin again. He left for his journey that very same day, and soon she too packed her bags and left to stay somewhere else in the city.
