As the moon began to appear in the dim sky, signaling the beginning of nightfall, Haru Glory lay on his back, thinking about the past two years of his life.
Neither had been much fun. In the former one, Lucia had almost succeeded to bringing about another Overdirve, and it had taken Haru and his friends much traveling, fighting, and general panic and misery to stop him and the Endless once and for all. He had almost gotten trapped fifty years in the past. He had been nearly killed by the powerful Demon Gods, seen the death of many close people, and almost fallen to Lucia at the end. But by some miracle, they had survived, and the evil had been destroyed once and for all.
However, that wasn’t the end for Haru. In their efforts to destroy the Endless, Haru had gotten trapped inside the Stellar Memory itself. Unable to force his way out, he had spent a year floating in the infinite starry limbo. The only thing keeping him sane was that somehow, he had found the ability to see the world he had left behind. He wasn’t sure how the Stellar Memory enabled him to do it, but he was glad he could watch his friend’s lives progress.
He’d witnessed his friends mourn for him, but find the strength to go forward in their lives. Musica, Ruby, Griff, Belnika and Iulius all found new homes, and began living normal, quiet lives. Let and Julia returned to Makai and finally got married. Shuda started dating Cattleya, and though Haru still thought his sister could do better, he was grateful that Shuda was around to care and look after her in his absence.
And Elie… she was alright. She had found a home with his sister, starting going to a college so she could make a life for herself… she was happy. Which was all he had ever wanted for her.
Not that that helped him much. For that entire year in limbo, he had thought about her daily, remembering the times they had spent together, watching her as she aspired to become a dancer again, and wishing he could be with her. Watching her from a distance had been slowly killing him, and he vowed that if he ever got out of here, he would never leave her again.
Thankfully, after a whole year of watching, his wish was granted. On the day of his disappearance, his friends had assembled to pay their respects. And by some force, some will of the Stellar Memory, perhaps finally breaking free of its confinement, it burst into the sky, returning the stars into the night, and setting Haru back in the real world.
When he realized he was back where he belonged, his first instinct was to find her, hold her close, even if she didn’t remember him. Actually being able to touch her was all he needed. But when she hugged him, and said “Welcome back..” in that sweet voice of hers, he finally felt complete. He was home.
That was about six months ago, and since then, things had been great, if very hectic. He had returned to Garage Island, and started night school to get the education he had missed out on. In between school and a job down by the island docks, he had also taken up writing. He had felt compelled to put all he had seen in his adventures onto paper, and this had led on into writing his own original stories. Despite the occasional ribbing from his friends, they were all very supportive of his new hobby, even if Shuda liked to annoy him by pointing out his spelling errors.
And life with Elie was just wonderful. With no Demon Card around, they could spend their time together to the fullest. When they weren’t out on dates, enjoying the day together and spending their nights performing… certain unspoken acts, he was either attending her dance lessons, cheering her on and helping with her studies, or she was helping him out with his writing and homework.
It was as perfect a life as he could imagine. But lately, something had been bothering him about his relationship. As though there was something missing.
Perhaps it was recalling Let and Julia’s wedding, or when he read in one of his sister’s magazines that Go, the crazy film director who had moved to the island had married his girlfriend Rosa on some remote tropical hideaway.
Marriage was something he hadn’t thought about much. The idea of spending your life with one person was a bit much for him to grasp. But after all he had gone through with Elie, after all the joy and turmoil the two had gone through… the idea finally seemed appealing.
Which was why he was here, standing by the cliffs waiting for her, so he could give her a ring he could only just afford and ask her to marry him.
Elie had driven him to do some crazy things in his time, but never anything like this.
“Haru!” He got up and turned to see her approach, looking lovely as ever. She had grown out her hair slightly longer, and had started to wear more long dresses and jeans compared to her skimpy outfits from the quest. But either way, she never failed to look beautiful, even at her worst.
“Hi, I’m glad you came.” He spoke.
She sat next to him. “Well, it’s not like I would refuse. Shuda and Catt-chan are gone, and you made it sound pretty important that I come.”
“Yeah…” His hand tightened in his jacket pocket, butterflies suddenly frailing in his stomach. The fear that she might reject him was there. He knew it was pretty unlikely.. but was Elie ready for such a commitment?
She stared at him, curiosity on her face. “So, what’s up? You’re not planning anything naughty for us to do out here, are you?”
“Er… no…” He stammered. “Actually… Elie-chan, I need to ask you something.”
“Oh, about your latest story?”
“No.. it’s about us.” He tried to keep cool, but his nervousness seemed to be getting worse. “Elie.. we’ve been together a long time, and I was thinking… no I was hoping that you would…” He froze.
“Would what?” She asked.
“Would… would… er.. it’s a big favour.. one you may not like… see , I can’t imagine..” He rambled. This was not how he had planned it in his head earlier. Dammit, he loved her, she loved him… but did she love him that much?
“Er… you know what, forget it.” He got to his feet, feeling like a complete fool. “I’ll do this later.” He started walking, hoping he could get away before he felt the need to kill himself from embarrassment.
But before he could, Elie got up and grabbed his hand. Tugging him gently, he turned back to her. Her amber eyes stared at him with concern.
“Haru.. if something’s wrong, please just tell me.” She pleaded.
“Nothing’s wrong..” He huffed. “It’s just… what I have to tell ask of you… it’s huge.”
She smiled, that sunny smile which could always comfort him. “Then ask me.”
Her soft words, her gentle actions… time and time again, they had bolstered him with courage when they needed it most. She helped him face his fears, looked out for him just as he would. No matter what.. she was there.
He now knew for certain he was doing the right thing.
“Elie…” He squeezed her hand. “Ever since that day I came back, you’ve made my life complete. During the whole quest, you never gave up on me. And over time, I liked being with you… to the point where I couldn’t stand being without you.”
“Haru…” Her voice was tinged with confusion and awe.
“And I’ve come to realize.. I want what we have to be forever. I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy. And so…”
And as he got to one knee, realization hit her, and she gasped loudly as he produced a small box from within his jacket pocket. He opened it, revealing a diamond ring, the stone cut into the shape of the Holy Bring itself.
“Elie Resha Valentine…. Will you marry me?”
He had spent some time imagining her reaction. His best possible scenario was she would either hug him and scream yes, or give him the biggest kiss imaginable. His worst one was that she would politely say no and crush his heart forever.
He hadn’t expected her reaction to be fainting.
She stood still, her eyes wide in surprise. Then her eyes closed, her knees collapsed, and she fell, almost hitting the ground if Haru hadn’t caught her in time.
“Elie!” He yelled, rather astounded that he could shock her that much. He held her in his arms, shaking her head gently. “Elie!”
Her eyes opened. “Wha…” She blinked, seeing her current position cradled in her boyfriend’s arms and wondering how she got there. “Wha.. what happened? I just blacked out..”
“Well, I asked you to marry me, and then you fainted.”
Her mouth gaped open. “Wha.. are you kidding me?”
“I’m not kidding.” Haru smiled. “I adore you Elie. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.. if you’ll accept.”
Elie looked at him, thinking about all that had happened since they had met. He had become the most important person in her life, the one who made her happy, soothed her sadness, and protected her from her troubles. She could remember when he had vanished from her life for a year. Missing him had been awful, the hollow feeling in her heart only reminding her that she had never just told him how she felt…
Now.. he was asking her to marry him. To be a part of him forever. Of all the things she desired and wished for, this beat them all. And all she had to do was say…
“Yes…” Tears ran down her face. “Yes I will!”
In her excitement, her wrapped her arms around his neck, which caused him to overbalance, sending them crashing to the ground. He ended up on top of her, his face inches from hers.
“You… really?” He gasped.
Elie smiled and kissed him. “Really.”
With a smile he never thought he could pull off on his face, he pulled her upward, retrieved the ring from where he dropped it, and slipped it onto her finger. She stared at the stone, wondering if she was still unconscious.
“Wow…” She breathed, looking into her boy… no, her fiancee’s eyes. “We’re gonna be husband and wife.”
He held her close again, pressing soft kisses to her face. “Now and forever…”
They embraced under the stars, and for a few moments, everything felt perfect.
It was a feeling they weren’t going to experience for a long time in the months to come.
----------
“Slow down Elie…” Haru had tried to stop his fiancée rushing by grabbing her arm, but that just resulted in him getting dragged all the way to their house.
“But we’ve gotta spread the word!” She chattered rapidly as they entered the living room. Plue was the only occupant, with Shuda and Cattleya out on a date. He was playing a video game, which he paused as he hopped up on the couch to greet his master.
“Hey Plue, guess what!” Elie held up her hand, displaying the ring in all its glory. “Haru and I are getting married! Surprised huh?”
Plue wasn’t really surprised. He’d been with Haru when he got the ring. But pleased everything had gone well, he did a little victory dance for his master.
Elie grabbed the phone, and started calling Musica’s number. “Say, does Musica know about this?”
“No, I told no one. Didn’t want them blabbing.” Haru smirked.
“Well, they’re gonna know now! I’m calling them over to invite them to the wedding.”
“Elie, it’s dark out. They’re probably all out, let’s wait til morning.”
“But I can’t wait!” She squealed hugging herself. “This is the biggest thing since I found my memories. I can’t hold something like this in.”
Haru sighed. “Well, if we’re gonna do this, lets get all of them together, them we can tell them all at once.”
It took only a few minutes to contact all their old friends, then the two settled onto the couch, Elie resting comfortably against Haru’s chest. Plue took this as a cue to leave them alone, and headed into the kitchen to find food.
Elie smiled as Haru stroked her hair. “Mmm… I can’t wait to get married. I just know it’s going to be so wonderful.”
“Really?” Haru asked. “What kind of wedding do you think we should have?”
Her forehead crinkled in thought. “Well, nothing too fancy… but we really should have it somewhere posh… and with a big party afterwards…” She shook her head. “Oh I’m not sure really. There’s all types of things we could do.”
“I’ve seen pictures of my parent’s wedding.” Haru spoke. “Theirs was pretty nice. Just a church, Mum in a white dress, and Dad in a snazzy suit.”
“We should ask Julia when she gets here, she would know more than us. Do you remember her and Let’s wedding?” She sniggered. “Oh right, of course you did, you were in the Stellar Memories. You saw everything.”
“Yeah, I saw the wedding.” He sighed. “Unfortunately, I also saw them consummate it afterwards. Eeech.”
Elie giggled. “I doubt you’ll be saying the same at our honeymoon…”
The two spent the next few minutes chatting about various wedding things. However, being two people who got easily bored when waiting for something, and with their friends not showing up anytime soon, they decided to kill some time with their favourite pastime. Making out.
Which explained why, when Hamlio Musica entered the house, he found his best friend sprawled on the couch, with his shirt unbuttoned and Elie kissing his bare chest. Rolling his eyes, Musica announced his entrance as politely as he could.
“Yo perv boy!”
“Ahhh!” Elie jumped of the couch in fright, and Haru nearly fell off as he hastily tried to button his shirt.
“Musica! How did you get in!”
“You gave me a key, remember?” Musica huffed. “Please tell me you didn’t call me here to watch you two get jiggy. I blew off a hot date to come here cause it sounded important.”
“Oh, sorry dude.” Haru apologized. “But we’re glad you came. We’ve got something big to tell, and as soon as everyone else gets here..”
“Everyone else?” Musica was intrigued. “What’s the news, you moving house or something?”
“No, bigger than that.” Elie grinned. “But you’ll have to wait.”
“Okay, but it better be worth it.” Musica made himself comfy on a sofa. “I mean, this girl is really hot. And I mean really!”
Haru smirked at his friend. “Melodia again, right?”
“Damn right.” Musica nodded. “Man, it’s been great seeing her again, it’s reminded me what I love about dating. The first glances, the cozy dinners…”
At this point, they heard the sound of the back door opening, and two people quietly creeping in. Hushed voices spoke, obviously trying to remain undetected.
“I cannot believe you talked me into this.” A female voice spoke.
“Trust me, you’ll love it.” Her male companion replied.
“Okay, we’ve got some whipped cream, but I think we’ll need to find some rope at your place…”
Musica grinned. “The kinky sex..
“AHEM!” Haru coughed loudly. Seconds later, Shuda and Cattleya sheepishly stepped into the living room.
“Hi Catt-chan!” Elie called. Haru just glared angrily at Shuda.
To his credit, Shuda had changed quite a bit in the last year. Though still a bounty hunter, he was now a lot less rigid in his work and a bit more mellow, reflected in his new longer hair. He was still gruff and upfront to everyone except Cattleya though, and it was that closeness to his sister that still irked Haru to this day.
“Haru” Shuda spoke stiffly, trying to preserve some dignity. “I thought you were out.”
“Well, I’m not.” Haru growled. “And just what do you think you’re doing with my sister?”
“Uh.. baking a cake?” Cattleya offered.
Elie stood between Haru and Shuda. “Sweetheart, just calm down. We’re meant to tell them the big news, remember?”
“Big news?” Cattleya eyed Elie suspiciously. Ever since she’d met her, Elie had been known for attracting mischief.
“Just wait a while Catt-chan, we have to tell the others as well.”
“Others?”
Just then, Ruby, the millionaire penguin burst through the door, wearing what looked like a midget sized bathrobe.
“Haru, poyo!” He cried, sounding worried. “I came as soon as I could, poyo! Your call sounded important. Is something wrong, poyo?”
“Did we wake you up?” Haru noted the robe.
Ruby nodded. “Uh yeah! Soon as you called me, I got dressed and took my flying limo over here to see you, poyo. By the way, is it okay to park it in that big field near your street?
“Big field…” Cattleya gasped. “Ruby, that’s Genma’s allotment! You’ve just ruined his prize crop!”
Ruby swallowed. “Ooops.”
The awkward moment was broken by a knock on the front door. Cattleya moved to open it, and was met with the stern face of Let of the Dragonrace.
“Miss Glory..” He bowed respectfully, then walked to the living room, stopping before Haru.
“Hey Let!” Haru got up to give his friend a hug. “Good to see you again.”
“Good to see you too Haru.” Let smiled. “I’m sorry we didn’t get here sooner, but we were a bit delayed…” He glanced back at the entrance.
Julia entered, or rather, Julia’s very swollen stomach entered, followed by Let’s grumbling wife. She glared at him.
“I used to move a lot faster before I was carrying your damn child around…” She saw Elie and smiled sweetly at her. “Hi Elie-chan.”
“Oh Julia!” Elie got up to offer her seat. “I’d forgotten! I’m so sorry for dragging you up at this time..”
“Nah, it’s okay.” Julia slowly sat down. “I could do with some action at night, seeing as I’m not getting it anywhere else..” Again she glared at Let.
Let just sighed. “Give it a rest woman! I’m just concerned for the child’s health.”
“Suuure you are.” Julia replied sarcastically. “You can’t figure out how to do it around this!” He pointed at her belly.
Let closed his eyes. “Just a few more months..”
Another knock was heard, and Cattleya answered the door. “Oh, hello Belnika.”
The lavender haired woman curtsied politely. “Hello Miss Glory. Sorry to bother you, but Elie asked me to come. She sounded quite urgent.”
“Yes, I wonder what she’s up to..” Cattleya replied.
“Oh, and I brought someone else who was called..” The impossibly handsome Iulius Rhozen came up behind Belnika, as impeccably dressed as always.
“Ah, Miss Glory, a true pleasure to see your beautiful visage again.” He took her hand and kissed her knuckle. “Tell me, how has a fair bloom like you still not found a man worthy for you?”
“I’ve been dating Shuda for a year now.” Cattleya glared.
“Like I said, how have you not found a man…”
Belnika pinched him in the arm. “Leave her alone. We’re here to see what Elie wants, remember?”
Chastened, Iulius followed Cattleya and Belnika into the living room. The girls were glad to see their friend again. Shuda was not. “Oh great. Camp Freddy’s here too?”
Iulius retained a smile. “Shuda old boy. Shouldn’t you be in a dog pound with the rest of the wild beasts?”
“Don’t push me…”
Cattleya intervened. “Look Elie, we’re all here now, what is this all about?”
Haru and Elie smiled at each other, and stood before their guests. “Well, we’ve got a big announcement to make to all of you..”
“What, you’re getting married or something?” Musica called impatiently.
“Musica!” Haru yelled!
“You jerk. I was gonna say that!” Elie wailed.
Musica blinked. “What, I was joking…” His jaw dropped. “No way! Really?”
Haru found his smile again, and took Elie’s hand. “Really. As of tonight, Elie and I are engaged.”
“WHAT?” Cattleya shrieked.
“Elie-chan! That’s wonderful!” Belnika ran over and hugged her friend. “I’m so happy for you!”
Julia managed to get to her feet, and stumbled over to hug her too. “That’s fantastic Elie!” She looked at Haru and winked at him. “Well done Glory. I wondered when you were going to do it.”
“I thought he never would!” Musica slapped his pal on the back. “My boy’s all grown up!”
“Eh, thanks Musica..” Haru blushed from the attention.
“Congratulations you two.” Let smiled.
Shuda chuckled. “Yes, nice to see you both maturing for once..”
“Poyo! This is awesome!” Ruby jumped for joy.
“Splendid news!” Iulius gushed. “This calls for a celebration! Where’s the champagne?”
“Have you set a date yet?” Belnika asked.
“Dude, can I be best man?”
“Where are you gonna hold it, poyo?”
“Now hold on!” Cattleya raised her voice above the others. They all paused, leaving her to stare her brother in the eye. “Haru, you’re not serious about this, are you?”
“Uh, hello?” Elie showed off her ring. “I think he is.”
Cattleya ignored her. “Haru, you can’t just go and get married. You and Elie are still at school!”
“I finish night school in a few weeks, then I’ll be working full time at the docks.” Haru explained.
“Yeah, and it’s not like I have to quit, is it?” Elie joined in.
“It might.” Cattleya glared at them. “You two are still too young to be thinking about marriage.”
“Sis, I’m nineteen. I think I’m old enough to know about marriage.”
“Have you thought about this at all?” Cattleya glared. “You would be changing your life forever, and not necessarily for the better.”
Haru seemed stunned at his sister’s denial. “I love her sis, that’s all that matters.”
“Oh really? Well, how are you going to afford it? And what about where you’re going to live? And what about careers, or children?”
Elie now had a visibly fearful look in her eye. “Well… uh..”
“Exactly! This isn’t something you just do on a whim. It’s a huge commitment.” She spoke sternly. “And you two are not mature enough to go through with it.”
Haru’s eyes narrowed. “Funny. A few years ago, you thought I wasn’t able to leave the island and save the world. And yet somehow, I managed it!”
“Haru…”
“I’m not a kid! I’m ready for this, to make a new start in our lives. I thought you of all people would see that!
He turned to the door. “But I guess if you can’t… well that’s your problem.” He stormed out of the room, slamming the front door as he left the house.
“Haru…” Elie tore off after him, leaving an upset Cattleya standing before the guests.
Ruby was the first to speak. “Man, that was a bit harsh, poyo. Can’t you be happy for them?”
“Yeah, way to kill the moment?” Musica crossed his arms. “What’s with you? The guy can save the planet, but he can’t get married?”
“Look, I was just saying…” Cattleya sighed. “It’s a different from fighting bad guys and looking for magic stones. It’s something they have to stay committed to for the rest of their lives. Do you really think they can cope with that?”
Let shook his head. “You don’t seem to know your brother very well. In the whole time I was with him, his only concerns were for Elie, us, and the rest of the world. He wasn’t interested in fame, glory, or honour. All he cared about was saving the world for us.”
“That’s why we lost him for a year.” Belnika spoke. “He let Elie destroy the Endless and got trapped in the Stellar Memory for us. If he can commit to something like peace, even letting himself die for it, I think he can commit to marrying her.”
“I…” Cattleya fought for words. “I just don’t want him to be hurt. He’s been though enough in his life. I don’t think he could hope if they were to separate again.”
Shuda stepped up to his girlfriend. “Perhaps the same could be said of you.”
“Excuse me?”
“Well, Haru was gone from your life for over two years. Perhaps you’re afraid Elie is about to take him from you again.”
“What?” She looked at him incredulously. “That’s ridiculous! I’m worried about him ruining his life.”
Shuda looked at her with an understanding gaze. “I know you only want the best for him… but he has to make his own way now. It’s his life to make as he sees fit, all we can do is quide and support him… something I think he could use right now.”
----------
After wandering around the island, Elie eventually found Haru inside Café Tsubomi. The place was empty, save for Genma cleaning tables, and Haru sitting at the bar, sipping a dark liquid from a glass.
“Haru!” She rushed over and knocked the glass from his hand. “I won’t let you drink yourself into a hole over this! It’s not worth it!”
He looked at her oddly. “It was cola.”
“Oh… well the caffeine is bad for you.”
Haru turned away and slumped against the bar. Genma looked concerned. “Is he okay? He said three words when he came in here. ‘My Sister sucks.’ And he’s been quiet ever since.”
“Oh I guess he didn’t tell you then…” Elie smiled, holding up her ring hand. “Haru and I are now engaged.”
Genma’s jaw dropped. “Sweet mother of Rave!” He hopped over the counter, and grasped the still depressed Haru in a bear hug. “Congratulations Haru! I knew you’d finally land a girl one day! And what a catch!”
He grabbed Haru’s cheeks and tugged his face upwards. “Come on, smile you bastard! This is the biggest moment of your life!”
Haru pushed him away. “Thanks Genma, but I’m not in the mood.” He sighed. “I can’t believe Sis just yelled at me like that.”
“Cattleya doesn’t exactly approve of the wedding.” Elie explained.
“She still thinks I’m just a kid. Thinks I can’t handle being married.” Haru huffed.
“She was probably just surprised. I mean, I fainted when you proposed.” Elie offered. “Maybe Catt-chan’s reaction was to get angry. She might change her mind.”
“It just pisses me off.. I thought she’d be happy for me.”
“Give her a chance Haru.” Genma spoke. “I was pretty angry at your dad when he started dating your mother.”
Haru blinked. “Angry at Dad? Why?”
Genma took a seat. “Well, he and I had been close pals ever since he came to live on the island. We did everything together. Then he started dating Sakura, spending more time with her, and I didn’t handle it well. I just couldn’t stand the thought of losing my best friend.” He smiled wistfully. “We sorted it out when he asked if I could be the best man when he planned to propose to her..
He then noticed a familiar figure enter. “Hey Cattleya, over here! I think you and your brother need to talk.”
“I think we do..” Cattleya walked over to Haru, who avoided looking at her. Elie stood by the side quietly.
“Gonna wail on me again sis?” Haru spat. “I suppose you’re going to stop me from planning my retirement or something.”
“Actually..” She sighed. “I came to congratulate you.”
He turned around and blinked at her. “You what?”
“I’m sorry I yelled at you Haru. I just.. I was just so shocked.”
Haru seemed surprised. “It’s not that shocking.. I mean, you must have known I would do it one day.”
“I know…” Tears pooled in her eyes. “But in a way, I wished it wouldn’t. Cause if you did, you’d have to leave me alone again… I know you’re an adult now, but I still see you as my little brother. I’m not ready to let you go again.”
Haru managed to smile. He could understand her, feeling the same way as he had on that distant day when he had left the island to find Rave.
“Sis..” He held her hand. “It’s okay to let go. I’ll still be a part of your life, no matter what. I’m not gonna disappear completely if I marry Elie.”
“I know..” Cattleya sniffed. “I’m just being selfish…
“You’re not alone. You’ve got Shuda… I know he’s an ass sometimes, but he loves you. And the gang will always hang around.”
“Heh, they only come for my cooking..” She laughed. She glanced behind her to see Shuda standing by the door, and the rest of the gang watching the scene in the window.
She looked at Haru. “Just tell me this Haru. Do you really love Elie enough to want to do this?”
“Utterly.” He spoke sincerely. “I want to be with her forever.”
“And Elie…” Elie jumped, realizing Cattleya was talking to her. “Do you promise you’ll go through with this? Do you love Haru that much?”
“Of… of course I do! I never want to leave him!” She declared.
Cattleya smiled. “Well, I guess I can do this then… you have my blessing.”
Elie squealed with glee, while Haru hugged his sister. “Thank you sis… this means everything to me.”
“Whatever makes you happy.” She replied, holding back tears.
It was hard, but Shuda was right. It was time to let go.
She felt Elie hug her from behind. “Thank you Catt-chan! Thank you thank you..”
“Easy Elie…” She chuckled.
“I mean it. You are the best sister ever!”
Cattleya blinked and looked at her. “Sister?”
Elie blushed. “Oops, that’s not quite true. At least, not until the wedding, he he.”
Cattleya turned visibly pale. Haru’s crazy, ditsy girlfriend… would be her sister in law?
Musica and the others entered, cheering for the happy couple. “Alright, we all happy again?”
Haru grinned. “Yeah, I think we are.”
“Then let’s celebrate already! Get the champagne out!”
----------
90 minutes and several glasses of bubbly later, everyone went their separate ways for home. Shuda and Cattleya remained as Genma shut up shop.
“What have I done?” Cattleya nursed a coffee. “I’m going to be related to Elie. Related to her!”
“She’s lived with you the past year, how bad can it be?” Shuda asked.
“She already steals most of my clothes and makeup. I just know she’d gonna be worse once she’s my sister.”
“Oh relax.” Shuda huffed. “They’ll probably move out to a place of their own anyway.”
He instantly regretted his words when he saw her lower lip tremble. “My brother’s moving out!”
He quickly pressed her to his chest, his usual tactic to calm her down. “Yes, but we agreed on this, remember?”
“I know..” She sniffed. “But I’m gonna miss him.”
Genma sat next to them. “He’ll be fine Cattleya. He’s obviously thought this out, and to his credit, he’s acting a lot cooler than his dad did.”
“You were there when Gale proposed?” Shuda inquired.
“Sure was. Buy, you should have seen him. The guy was a nervous wreck. He had to drink a whole bottle of gin just to settle his nerves.” He chuckled. “And yet, he seemed so determined at the same time. Like he’d finally found something in his life he truly wanted.”
“I love this story..” Cattleya smiled
“Course, it almost broke his heart when she said no..”
She blinked. “Excuse me? My mother said no to his proposal? She never told me that.”
“Well, she wanted to marry him, but she felt she wasn’t quite ready for it.” Genma explained.
“So how did he change her mind?” Shuda asked.
Cattleya chuckled. “Turn on the old Glory charm did he?”
“Er actually…” Genma stifled a laugh. “He didn’t convince her Cattleya. You did.”
Her jaw dropped as she realized what he meant. “You mean she was… oh my…”
Genma started to laugh. “Ha, oh man, I can still see the look on the minister’s face when Sakura waddled up the aisle..”
Cattleya shook her head. “Well.. that just puts the cherry on top of this night. I’m going home.”
“Actually, perhaps you should stay at my place.” Shuda spoke. “I imagine Haru and Elie would like to… celebrate their engagement privately, if you get my drift."
“I get it all right.” She sighed.
Shuda smirked. “Though perhaps, we can celebrate in our own way…”
She raised an eyebrow. “Hmm, that does sound inviting..” She kissed him on the cheek. “Alright, let me just get us a ferry.”
She left the café, and Shuda finished his drink in satisfaction. “Well, alls well that ends well.. at least until they start planning this wedding.”
“Speaking of weddings..” Genma spoke. “I have to ask you something?”
“Hmm?”
“Have you ever.. you know, considered marrying Cattleya?”
Shuda’s good eye widened. “Excuse me?”
“Well she’s a nice girl, I’ve always thought she’d be a great wife for someone. And you’re the first real relationship she’s had in a long time.”
“So?” Shuda shrugged.
Genma frowned. “You must have thought about it, you and her being married, at least once.”
Shuda suddenly felt trapped. “Well… maybe… once or twice… Look, I’m quite happy with the way things are now. Besides, I don’t think we’re quite ready for anything like that”
“Come on Shuda, I know how much you care about her. Now I know most people around here don’t approve, but I think you two look right together. I don’t see why you shouldn’t make a try of it.”
Shuda had a dour look on his face. “I’ve already got enough uncertainties in my life. I don’t need to complicate it with marriage.”
“So you’re afraid?”
He glared. “Watch what you say old man.” He turned for the door.
“Just think about it, okay?” Genma called as he stepped toward the entrance. “Cattleya’s lucky to have a guy like you. She deserves you forever.”
“Maybe..” Shuda spoke as he left. “But I wonder if I truly deserve her?”

Musica nervously entered his apartment, wondering if Melodia was planning some revenge for ditching her. “Babe? You in here?”
Walking in further, he found her on the couch, fast asleep in her nightie, a late night film playing on the TV. He gently settled next to her, careful not to wake her.
Everytime he looked at her, he felt like the luckiest man on the planet. He’d thought she’d never speak to him again after the way he’d left her in Blues City all those years ago. But when he came back to Punk Street to take over his Grandfather’s forge, there she was, waiting for him, eager to restart what he had given up when he started looking for the Silver Ray.
She’d moved down to Punk Street, taken up a jab as a florist, and the two had bought an apartment together. And from there, things had been pretty great, though their jobs meant they didn’t see each other as often as they liked. Tonight was meant to be a special night for them, before Elie had called.
Her eyes opened, and focused on her boyfriend. “Hamlio? You’re back.”
“Sure am.” He smiled. “Sorry for running off like that.”
“It’s okay. I’m sure it must have been important. Are Haru and Elie alright?”
“Heh, sure. They’re just engaged, that’s all.”
“Engaged?” Her eyes widened in excitement. “Oh that lovely! I always thought they were a cute couple.”
“I knew that about two years before they did.” He smirked. “It’s about time Haru got a clue.”
“Ooh, am I invited? I’d love to come if I could. I just love weddings!” Melodia bounced on the couch, highly excited now.
“Easy girl. They haven’t set a date yet, but I’m sure they’ll squeeze you in. I want you to be there anyway.”
“Yes, it’s best I do go.” She eyed him comically. “I wouldn’t want you chasing after any bridesmaids.”
Musica pretended to look offended. “Hey, that hurts. I’m a changed man. Besides, I’ll be too busy preparing my speech.”
“Speech?”
“You know, the best man speech.”
“Has Haru asked you to be his best man?”
“No, but he doesn’t have to.” He replied smugly. “I mean, I’m his best friend, who else is he gonna ask?”
Melodia thought. “I don’t know, that red-haired guy I keep hearing about? Shuda something?”
“Shuddy? Why the hell would he ask him?” Musica laughed. “The guy tried to kill him once.”
“Well in fairness, you told me you didn’t Haru when you first met him?” Melodia spoke.
“Well… that was different. I was an ass back then.”
“And this Shuda guy wasn’t?”
Musica changed the subject. “So we gonna let this night go to waste? It’s not too late to have some wine… and anything else you’d like..” He waggled his eyebrows.
Melodia rolled her eyes. “Oh Hamlio, you’re a real romantic, you know that?”

After the whole quest was over, Let and Julia had purchased a small house on the outskirts of Hip Hop city, which they used whenever they were on long trips out of Makai, or wished to stay with their friends in the human world for a while longer. It was here that Let and Julia entered to stay the night, though Julia was explaining that they would probably be here for a while.
“I don’t see why we need to stay.” Let spoke. “They won’t be having the wedding for a while yet.”
“But there’s lots of planning and stuff to do.” Julia stretched out on the couch and kicked her shoes off. “You know what Elie’s like, the poor thing will be overwhelmed by it all. Rub my feet love.”
Accustomed to this by now, Let sat cross-legged by her legs and began rubbing her feet. “You don’t give Elie enough credit. I think she can manage this.”
“Let, its hard work. Remember how tough it was to arrange our wedding?”
“Not really, since you did most of the work.”
Julia glared at him over her belly. “Excuse me? You did some stuff as well.”
“No, I came up with some cost-cutting suggestions, and you told me to go to hell.” Let replied calmly.
“Well… it was our wedding! It was supposed to be extravagant!”
“I’ll take affording a roof over my head over extravagance anyday.”
“Oooh, you unfeeling clod!” She fumed. “If I wasn’t the size of the Great Dragon, I’d kick your ass for that!”
Let sighed. “I hope you know what you’re getting into Haru…” He muttered.
“You know..” He spoke to her. “I was thinking the three of us could cuddle a little before we went to bed, but seeing as you’re not in the mood.”
“No no no!” Julia pleaded, her temper disappearing. “Please, can we?”
Let smiled and helped her up. Then again, marriage wasn’t too bad…

All through the drive back to her apartment, Belnika sat with a happy smile on her face, her mind filled with visions of white frilly dresses, beautiful flowers and gold rings. Iulius chuckled as he glanced at her.
“Excited about the wedding Nika-chan?”
She snapped out of her trance. “Oh… yes, I am. Ooh I can’t help it, I just love a wedding. There’s just something… magical about them, you know?”
“I suppose.” Iulius answered. “Though remember when we held that wedding reception at the restaurant? What a bloody nightmare that was.”
She sniggered. Mr Iulius was always so protective of the exclusive restaurant he owned, and loathed holding any event which required a lot of mess and shouting, like children’s birthdays and wedding receptions.
“I mean, I was expecting a nice, dignified affair, and what happens? Some little toerag starts a food fight. The bride’s dress was ruined, and I spent hours scraping pesto sauce off the walls!”
“It was still fun though, right?”
He smiled. “Well, I guess I did enjoy myself. Up to when the father of the bride threatened to kill me over the food bill.”
“You do overcharge a bit..” She spoke absently, staring at his smooth face as he focused on the road.
She knew it was wrong. Mr Iulius was her employer and friend. He’d given her a job as head hostess at his restaurant soon after it was open. He put a lot of trust in her to look after the customers. It was wrong to look at him as she did, with a look of longing and a little bit of lust. But she couldn’t help it. She truly liked Iulius… more than he could ever imagine.
There was just so much she found appealing about him. His good looks and rapier wit. His ability to be calm and collected in any situation. His refined and charming personality, which could be a bit much sometimes, but could endear him to anyone. He was still rather elitist and vain, and spend ages preening himself in a mirror before he came to work, but she was willing to look over those annoyances to see the man within.
Oh how she wished she could just ask him for a date, a proper date under the stars. But she liked her job, their friendship so much. She didn’t want to risk it all. But then, maybe it would be worth it..
“Mr Iulius… have you ever thought about getting married?” She asked, wondering what the hell she was doing asking him something so personal in the first place. Her mouth was acting faster than her brain.
“Well, the thought has occurred…” He replied with a grin. “It would be nice to have a family someday, continue the family line…”
“You shouldn’t marry someone just to carry on your name.” She admonished. “You should do it because you love her.”
“I meant that too.” He seemed to drift off. “Ah, to have a delicate beauty by my side forever… that really would be something.”
She blushed. He had such a silver tongue.
“Do.. do you have your eye on anyone?”
He laughed. “I wish. Business has been so hectic lately, I’ve hardly had time to date. And to tell the truth, all the local girls around here are beginning to bore me. All they talk about is how much money they’re making and how they’re spending it.”
Her eyes widened in hope. “So… you’re looking for someone a little different?”
“Perhaps… ah, here we are.”
With a heavy heart, she realized they were outside her apartment. He got out the car, ran to her door, and opened it for her. “Your destination m’lady.”
She giggled at the gesture, it was so like him. And yet, she wished he was doing it as more than a little joke. “Thank you Mr Iulius.” She got out and walked to her door.
“I shall see you tomorrow then.” Iulius spoke. Oh, and let me know if Elie has anything I should know for the wedding.”
“Of course. Good night.” She forced a smile.
Iulius gave a wave, then he returned to his car, and was off into the night. Belnika watched it until it was out of sight. She sighed.
“Maybe one day… I’ll just tell him…”

Realising that Cattleya was with Shuda, Plue was asleep and they had the house to themselves, Haru and Elie had decided to celebrate their engagement in a more private manner. And also a very hot, loud and steamy manner.
They lay in their bed, bodies intwined, savoring the cool air breezing through the open window.
“Mmm…” Elie rested her head against Haru’s chest. “This may well be the best night of my life.”
“Better than when you won that huge jackpot at Ruby’s casino?” Haru smiled.
She thought about it. “Well… it’s about even.”
He chuckled and laid his hands on her back, stroking the smooth skin. “I’d say it was the best night of my life, but I think I’d better save it for the actual wedding.”
Yeah.. gosh, I still haven’t thought much about the wedding. I still don’t know what to do.”
“Me neither. Guess I’ve been thinking about life after the wedding.”
She looked at him. “Oh?”
“Yeah… I’m thinking the first thing we is do is buy a house together.”
“Eh? You don’t like this one?”
I do, but I think it’s time we got a place on our own. We drive Sis mad enough already. I don’t want to impose on her once we’re married.”
“I guess.. and having our own house would be fun.” Her eyes gleamed in excitement. “We could put in an arcade!”
Haru blinked. “Er.. maybe. I was thinking we find something closer to the beach. You know, somewhere close to Sis and our friends, but somewhere different.”
“Oooh, we should live on the mountains! Imagine the view!”
“I can also imagine you complaining every time we have to climb up and down there to go out and get home.”
She stuck her tongue out at him. “You have no imagination.”
“I do.” He grinned. “I can imagine us in a nice little place by the beach, you cooking a meal…”
“Ahem!” Elie glared at him. “We’re taking turns.”
He tried to cover. “… er, as you rest from performing in your broadway musical.”
“You think I’ll be a famous dancer, like I used to be?” She asked.
He kissed her hair. “I’ve seen you in your classes. You’ll be greater than when you were Resha.”
“I hope so…” She smiled. “And what’ll you be doing in the future?”
He furrowed his brow. “Um… damn, guess I haven’t decided what I want to do after school. I don’t want to work at the docks forever…”
“You’ll figure it out.” Elie moved up his body and kissed him. “If you can save the world, you can do anything.”
“Anything for you..” He muzzled her neck.
She giggled. “This wedding is going to be perfect. I can already see you in your tuxedo. You look so handsome. And all the other guys look nice as well. Hee, and the bridesmaids look gorgeous and..
She stopped when she realized Haru wasn’t listening. He was looking at the roof with a somber expression.
“Sweetie, what’s wrong?”
He shook his head. “Sorry. It just occurred to me that.. my parents aren’t going to be there.”
Her expression fell. “I know… Mine won’t be around either. And my dad really wanted to marry me off to one of the Blue Sky Knights when I was older.”
“Shiba, Sieg, they won’t be there either.” Haru sighed. “If it weren’t for them, we might not be here now.”
“Yeah… losing people sucks.” Elie huffed.
She felt Haru’s arms wrap around her. “Hey, we can still remember them. Thank them for all they did for us. That way, they’ll be there in spirit.”
She smiled again. “That would be nice..”
He kissed her. “I know.. trust me, this wedding is going to be amazing.”
“I’ll always trust you..”
They embraced again, happy in the knowledge that from now on, things could only get better.
Or so they hoped.
To be continued..
