Hunted

The night is still young but he's already asleep when I enter his room. I soundlessly walk to his bed and seat on the edge.
He doesn't notice my presence; he's too caught up in his nightmares. From the sounds he makes it'll be an other restless night, I fear.
I gently put my hand on his forearm and shudder at the touch of his soft pale skin. He is shaking; fighting against shadows again. Monsters who wait during the day in dark corners and who are set free when the sun goes down. Memories who came back from the past to hunt him.
Through the years, his beautiful hazel eyes have seen too many things. Too many injustices and inequalities.
Through the years, his gentle hands have done too many things. Too many gun fired and knives thrown.

I get under the blanket and lie against him in the bed. I pass my arms around his torso and hold on tight.
I wish there could be more to do. I wish my love could be strong enough to rescue him. I wish I could confront the monsters face to face and kill them once and for all.

But I know that the only thing I can do is send them back to the dark corners they came from. So I hold on tight and let his heart beat at the same rhythm as mine. I hold on tight and let the heat of my body warm his heart.
I hold on tight and hope the memories will let John sleep peacefully tonight…
