My Brother’s Bride”

by Tsubame Ongaku

Tsubame: I don’t own Naruto but I love the characters to death! Oh! I guess you should also know that I don’t know when Sakura’s actual birthday is…it’s just part of the story…

Chapter 1: “Spring”

Spring is probably the most colorful of all the seasons… and the most beautiful. The Harunos always loved the spring. The singing of birds, the blooming of flowers and the falling of the cherry blossoms. The cherry blossom trees were the Lady Haruno’s favorite.

She loved the way the lovely pink petals fell gracefully to the ground like rain at the end of each spring.

Every spring she watched the Sakura petals fall and every spring she prayed for a child.

The Haruno couple wanted a boy. For many years they’ve tried to beget a boy to inherit the Haruno family legacy but failed. They never gave up hope though. They still believed in miracles.

They rejoiced when Lady Haruno found out that she was finally pregnant.

For nine months, the father planned on what he was going to teach his son. Lady Haruno meanwhile, began to make boy’s clothes for the baby. They even tried imagining what their perfect son would look like.

“He might have my eyes,” the mother sighed.

“And my strong built,” the father said.

The couple was content but then the day finally came…

It was spring when the day finally came and much to the couple’s delight.

The expectant father paced back and forth outside the room where his wife was giving birth to his child. The midwife had been there for eight hours with his wife. He agonized with every scream he heard from his wife’s lips. Little by little, he regretted having to make his wife go through such pain and promised never to make her go through it again.

Finally after those eight agonizing hours of intense labor. The screams ceased.

The nervous father noticed that the screams had stopped and stood anxiously by the door.

Minutes later, the door crept open and the old midwife came out.

“How is she?” he asked. He was deeply worried for his little wife.

The woman smiled. “She is fine and she gave birth to the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen.”

She handed the baby to him. He baby was still sleeping. The father’s pride could be seen in his face.

A perfect cherub’s face…an angel.

“He is beautiful.”

Then the father noticed the woman’s expression changed. “Sir, what you have in your arms…is a daughter.”

His eyes widen and he checked for himself. It was indeed a daughter. It was only then that he noticed a thick tuff of pink hair on her head and then she opened her eyes to reveal a pair of very unique green eyes.

Whatever resentment he felt of having a girl was lost, when allowed himself to lose himself in those eyes. They bore into him like she could understand him or read his mind.

The midwife watched nervously as the two stared at each other. “I will be going, sir.”

He nodded but had not replied. Instead, he and the baby entered the quarters to see the mother.

She had leaned against the headboard of the bed and surrounded with what looked like a mountain of pillows. She was a bit exhausted but still smiling. “How is he?”

He handed her the baby ever so gently as if it were a treasure. And it was…

“How is he?” she asked again, when he didn’t reply.

“We have…a perfect little girl, my dear.”

She was clearly disappointed but then she saw her husband smiling so proudly. She peered into the face of her daughter for the first time. She saw instantly what her husband saw.

She saw wisdom and intelligence within those green eyes.

The woman began to smile. She had borne a perfect angel. No mother could be anymore prouder.

Her husband saw his wife’s smile. He had to smile back. “What are we going to name her?”

Suddenly, the windows burst open and then wind and cherry blossoms surrounded all around them. It was a beautiful scene, causing the baby to smile as she began to reach out and touch the blossoms.

“Sakura,” the mother whispered.

“What?”

She faced her husband. He hadn’t quite heard her the first time. “I think we should name her Sakura.”

“Sakura?” he asked. He looked again at his daughter and nodded in agreement. It was a perfect name that suited her very well. “Yes, a beautiful name for such a beautiful daughter.”

“Are…are you disappointed?” she looked very worried.

He shook his head. “No. I would always love our child, whether it were male or female.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why? You’re sorry to me such a beautiful child?”

“No, of course not!”

“Then why?”

She blushed and bowed her head down. “For not giving you the son we always wanted.”

“No, don’t mind that.”

“But…”

“I have a feeling that though this child might not be a boy, she will still do a great many things.”

“Master, we have received news that the Haruno child is a girl.”

The head of the Uchiha clan nodded. “Send them my regards and that I will await their next visit with their girl.”

The messenger bowed. “As you wish.” Then he left the room, leaving his master alone again in the dark.

If the Haruno clan was about the light and beauty, the Uchiha clan was not necessarily about the dark but they were serious. They were known as the genius clan after all.

Despite their differences, the Uchiha and the Haruno clans were close especially the two heads of the clans. Only months ago, his own wife had given birth to his second son. They named him Sasuke. Sasuke Uchiha.

But unfortunately, Sasuke was only the second son and if they had plans to unite the two clans he wasn’t fit. The first born daughter of their long time allies does not deserve the mere second son.

“Itachi will do.” He thought.

Itachi Uchiha was his nine-year old son, the first-born son and heir. The head knew he was probably playing with fire. Itachi was unpredictable.

Even at an early age, Itachi showed signs of great power. He knew his son was dangerous but he chose to believe that he could still change over time.

He immediately sent for the messenger and began to write a letter to his old friend for the engagement of their two children.
