Never Goin' Down

Chapter 1
To Kill, That is Her Profession

By: Chou-san

-First Person POV-

As she pushed her way through the doors, our eyes met for a brief second. Humph, I say quietly to myself, returning to my drink, gulping it down and placing the shot-glass onto the counter. I glance over to the right at the spot where the pale woman with the raven tresses and lean fundamental nature sat. Toying with my glass, I began to ponder. -Who's seen their last sunset now, Suzuka...- I shook my head, grinning to myself as I dismount my stool. -Whoever it is you're after, better hope they're not on MY list too…- I pop my neck somewhat, placing my cash on the counter as I shifted my shades. Before I depart the bar, the bartender called me back.

"'Scuse me… Woman in that seat you were lookin' at left this for ya."

I turn to one side, staring at the note in his hands. I skimmed over the piece of paper carefully before considering to take it.

"Ya gonna take or ain't ya?"

I growl irritably and snatch the note from his shaking hands, causing him to tremble, stumbling slightly backwards. I shove the note into my pocket, then turned to glare at everyone in the bar, removing the shades from my eyes, giving them the Mind-Your-Own-God-Damn-Business glare. They all turned their attention back to what they were doing as I continued to leave. I pushed the bar doors open, walking down the lonely streets, pushing my way around people.

I'm going back to a place I came across since I might as well stick around and wait until all Hell brakes loose, since I've got something those Kei Pirates want: A suitcase that I snatched right before they could reach it. Pissed those freaks off enough to follow me all through space. I'm incognito, well; I'm trying to be at least. Unless you can picture me a blonde with a pair of sunglasses, tacky red and white outfit, work boots and a blue jacket with a name like Rachel Sweet... then... there you go.

Opening the doors of the raggedy old apartment building I was staying in for the time, the smells of sex, beer and mugginess overwhelmed my senses. Shaking my head from vertigo, I walked up the stairs slowly. I stopped at the top of the steps, finally reaching my destination further down the hall; I opened my door the old fashioned way.

-WHAM!-

I sighed, turning around and after removing my coat and boots, tore off my wig and mask. The first thing I saw was that suitcase. Walking up to it, I ran my hand along the cool exterior of the piece of luggage. I thought of how pissed those Tao Freaks were. I was determined to make my efforts worthwhile, I'd open it so I wouldn't have to lug around this metal contraption. Typing in the code, it opened, making a loud hissing noise as smoke started to seep through the openings.

Resusitation system check in progress...

I sat back and watched the suitcase went through a series of safety checks and inspections of it's surroundings. That's when I saw her. Melfina. She was in the suitcase in cold sleep, curled up, holding her knees, lifeless at the moment. She wouldn't be lifeless for long though. She looked so innocent; so at peace and unharmed, unscaythed and fresh. I knew this was the moment of truth: There was no turning back. Once she was awakened, nothing would be the same and everything would be just like a rollercoaster. Nothing short of sharp turns, catastrophic heights and death-defying drops.

Systems normal. Estimated resusitation time: 600 seconds.

Figuring this process would take a while since Melfina can't be moved during resuscitation, I decided to take a hot shower. Tomorrow, Melfina and I would ditch this planet, leaving behind a trail of nothingness to remind no one of me being here. -Except her...- But Suzuka knew who I was at the bar. She quite possibly wanted me just as dead as every other outlaw, Space Force or Kei Pirate out there. That, or how when she was hot on my trail, I bet that I could escape her Twilight Assassination in which I did by 2 minutes, winning the bet and a another day to live. I stalked to the bathroom, yawning slightly, taking note of the grime and build-up everywhere. I grunted slightly, ruffling up my hair just a bit and undressed, jumping into the shower.

Commencing countdown 3... 2... 1... Resusitation in 600 seconds.

Lifting my head slowly, I ran my fingers through my hair, removing the excess water from of my short mane as the water pressure coursed through down along my body. I still couldn't get Suzuka off my mind. -What are you doing here in a place like Sentinel III? Who could you be after?- The thought continued to badger me as I turned the water off, groping for a near by towel. This place just didn't seem like her style. But I figured if the pay is right, the services are better. Knowing Suzuka, if you pay her the right amount, she won't fail. Guaranteed. But with me, she let her contract go rather simply, despite her pride but swore she'd have my head, whether or not is was a paid ordeal or just to pass the time. Wiping off my face as I stepped out of the tub, I looked in the mirror after erasing the fog, staring at the likeness in the pane of reflective glass.

Resuscitation in 300 seconds...

Not some replica but the face I was born with. Dark I was and appeared to be, yet I was indomitable. Hell hath no fury compared to me and what I was capable of. And yet with Suzuka, she just saw another opportunity for a quick buck. She was so revered when it came to her contracts. Even so, was I not just as important as the others that died in her wake? Maybe, or maybe there's another reason. Yet she once claimed that flawed rationale wouldn't convince her to give up and yet... she gave up on me... The patch over my right eye limited my vision to nearly half of what it used to be. I wouldn't call myself visually impaired to say the least. The patch makes me seem much more intimidating towards those who feel they can match me. I grin at the mirror image, shaking my head in amusement. Wrapping the towel around myself, I left the steamy bathroom.

Resuscitation complete, Resuscitation complete…Now activating...

Upon hearing the status of the resuscitation processes and system checks, I gazed up to find Melfina standing stark naked in the middle of the living room surrounded by a thin, white mist. She looked almost celestial as I watched her stand so still, unmoving yet so alive at the same time. I blinked, waiting for a response. Before I could say anything, her eyes opened gradually as the mist dispersed.

"Heading toward star space calendar year 156. The G line project has been found successfully..."

Realizing that she was in fact alive, she began to look around the room as if questioning her being here. I could see tears beginning to form in her lenient eyes as she looked in my direction. I sighed and walked up to her, pulling her small form against mine. Melfina's arms were over her chest in an X like position as I embraced her tiny body against my mature stature. Her nude form against mine caused forgotten feelings to well up that I've kept down for years and had no reason to let out. Her small body was so baby soft, her milky white skin topped with wild jet black hair and docile hazel eyes. I could've just- -Get over it. Not a chance...- Sighing audibly with that thought in mind, I peeled her away from me, looking down at her.

"I need to get you dressed. We leave tomorrow."

I then released my grip and for once, gazed, long and hard into her outlying hazel eyes, seeing myself reflected against the darkness of her pupils. She sniffled and lifted her hand to my patch. Melfina then proceeded by running her slender finger tips over it, tracing the patch with a gentle almost etheral touch. And through the loud ringing in my ears, I could hear her soft voice speaking to me, hushed as if worried someone would find her out and cause her harm.

"What happened... to your eye," I sigh inwardly, but let it go as her innocent nature and my need to protect her got the best of me.

"It's a long, degrading story with inconsiderate mistakes I made simply without knowing any better. Come now, Melfina. We need to get you dressed," Melfina just watched me for a moment more before I turned and left for the bedroom. I gestured towards the bed as she sat down. I looked at her through the corner of my eye as I searched the drawers. She seemed to be the quiet keen and efficient type, but with a disturbing history that cascaded over her, invading her thoughts every so often. Tossing her a shirt with a pair of shorts, I left to put on my own clothing.

I emerged wearing a black sports bra with matching shorts. Melfina was sitting in the middle of the bed with a smile on her face. I could tell she wanted to strike up a conversation as I've never been the one to talk first. I moved to the bed, hoisting my legs onto the divan, lying back with my hands behind my head, sighing. My eye was closed but I new she was staring at me. I looked up at her and her smile still lingered.

"So, who are you," Melfina asked as she cocked her head to the side, watching me carefully. I inhaled sharply before speaking, closing my eye.

"My name is Hilda. I'm an outlaw who stole you from some very nasty Kei Pirates. That may seem wrong to you but just know this: I would never mistreat you," As I spoke, I stared up at the ceiling, paint peeling away and browning slightly. I then turned my gaze back to her. She was still watching me, now, with this shy smile as she sat on her knees, facing me.

"Where are we going?"

"Somewhere far, far, FAR away..." I said with an lamentable sigh, -This is gonna be a loooong night…- I thought as I rubbed my temples, groaning somewhat. Suddenly, I felt constricted, as if my ribs were going to break. Looking down, Melfina had latched onto me, her tiny arms around my mid-section and her head on my shoulder. I moved my arm to gather up the blanket, tossing some over us, moving back to hold her as I turned off the lamp-light.

I pondered various things as I lay with Melfina, who cuddled close, eyes closed, mind dreaming, scheming possibly. My thoughts began to drift back to Twilight Suzuka, the woman who saw killing as a profession and was damn hell good at it too. She hasn't changed much; clothing still the same and hair unchanged as well. I turned to look over at the clock. -2 A.M... Damn, there's no way she could've had a contract tonight...- Turning to look over in the darkness at the small package holding onto me, Melfina gripped as if afraid I'd leave her during the night. I leaned close and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. She mewled, tightening her grip on me, her soft, steady breath on my neck.

I smiled for the first time out of absolute contentment. But that smile didn't last very long as I began to think about the Kei Pirates and how they'd take Melfina away from me if I failed to protect her. I shifted to my side, wrapping my other arm around her, holding her to me. No way I'd let those bastards take her from me. But at that moment, out the window on a building adjacent to this one, I made out something in the obscurity of the night. I squinted my eye, adjusting to the darkness and... I saw... a tall, slim figure, with something long and slender at its hip…
