Later that night, Koichi and Sakura walked back from the spring, clothes soaked and laughing. Sakura brushed the snow out of her hair and giggled.
“We should do that more often!” she said happily. Koichi nodded and brushed off his sleeve. They both turned towards the cave and froze. It looked like no one was there.
“Um…shouldn’t the others have gotten back by now?” Sakura asked. Koichi nodded slowly. He entered the cave and looked around. Sure enough, they were the only ones there.
“So…um…what do you want to do now?” Koichi asked. Sakura shrugged and glanced out the cave entrance.
“We could go look at the stars…they might look different than on Earth…” she suggested. Koichi nodded and followed her out. When he exited, he saw her lying on her back on the grass, staring at the sky. Koichi lay down next to her. Sakura shook her head, her aqua eyes sparkling.
“They’re the same…” she said quietly, “They’re the same…stars…”
“How do you know?” Koichi asked. She shivered slightly. He blinked, stood up, and disappeared into the cave. He came back out with a blanket, and threw it over Sakura. She poked her head out from under it and smiled at Koichi, her face a light pink from the cold.
“Thanks…” she mumbled. She looked back up at the sky again. Koichi flopped down next to her.
“You’re right…it IS amazing what happens in this world…” he said. Sakura looked over at him, still smiling.
“Yeah…” She frowned slightly.
“But it IS weird, though. Even if the others wanted to find ‘the kid’ so badly, they would’ve at LEAST come to bed when they got tired,” she said. Koichi glanced back at the cave and nodded in agreement.
“Well, it’s dark…maybe they got lost…I mean, Takuya’s not the most navigational person in the world…” he suggested. Sakura shook her head.
“No, ‘cause Zoe is.” She sighed.
“It’s still weird…Takuya’s not THAT determined…is he?” she asked. It was Koichi’s turn to shake his head.
“Nah, he likes sleepi--” There was a low whistling sound in the air. Sakura sat up quickly, her eyes wide.
“Oh no,” she murmured. Grabbing Koichi’s wrist, she ran back to the cave. She pulled him behind a rock.
“What’s--” he began. Sakura covered his mouth with her hand, her gaze aimed at the cave entrance.
“Just don’t make a sound,” she whispered. She stood up, and began walking towards the entrance. Koichi turned to watch her, while trying to hide himself from view. She stopped at the entrance.
“…I know you’re there. Come out and face me, you coward.” A white, glowing orb appeared in front of Sakura. Koichi’s eyes widened slightly, but he remained silent. He jumped when the orb spoke.
“Did you think you could hide from me, you stupid girl?” it asked. Sakura hesitated, and then shook her head.
“I’m not hiding. I’m waiting,” she said, a hint of anger in her voice.
“What, may I ask, are you waiting for?” the orb asked. Or, hissed, really. Even from behind, Koichi could see Sakura’s shoulders tense up.
“For you to stop being a cowardly worm, you stupid savior-wannabe,” she said, balling her hands into fists. The orb didn’t say anything at first. Then, almost with a hint of satisfaction in its voice, it said, “And I suppose your friend doesn’t want to come out and play?” Koichi froze. He turned back around behind the rock and bent his head, so, hopefully, no one could see him. He heard Sakura pause, and then she said, “You’re being funny, as usual. I’m the only one here.”
“Don’t lie to me, brat! I saw him hours ago with you! And you’re wearing his hat!” the orb growled. (It’s odd to say that an orb growled. 0o)
“Well, you’re delusional,” Sakura answered, and then added, “As usual.” The orb disappeared. Sakura turned around.
“Are you okay?” she asked. Koichi, who was still behind the rock, nodded slightly.
“I’m fine…” he whispered.
“You know, you don’t have to whisper anymore. He’s gone,” Sakura said, smirking. Koichi gave a nervous laugh and stood up.
“What WAS that thing?” he asked, glancing nervously out of the entrance. Sakura smiled.
“Let’s just say that I have a stalker,” she joked.
“Hey, guys!” Sakura and Koichi both turned. Takuya, J.P., Zoe, Koji and Tommy ran towards them.
“Where were you guys?” Koichi asked.
“Mr. Shortcut got us lost,” Koji muttered, glaring at Takuya. Takuya glared back.
“But now we’re back, and we can sleep!” Zoe said, sighing happily and falling onto her leaf-cot-thing. Takuya hesitated, and then, eying Koichi suspiciously, said, “You didn’t…do anything while we were gone, did you?” Koichi and Sakura’s faces both turned pink, and they both said, “NO!” Takuya shrugged and, falling against the floor, fell asleep. After a few minutes, everyone else was asleep, including Koichi and Sakura.
Koichi awoke in the middle of the night to a loud thumping sound. He sat up and looked around to see what it was. Sakura was sitting on the stone floor, throwing what looked like a small bouncy ball against the wall. She caught it and, without turning around, said, “You couldn’t sleep, either?”
“Not with you banging, no,” Koichi joked. Sakura laughed.
“Sorry. I get anxious,” she said.
“About what?” Koichi asked, walking to where she was and sitting down. Sakura sighed.
“Remember what happened this evening? With the orb?” she asked. Koichi nodded.
“Well, that.” Koichi frowned.
“Was it someone…or something that you know?” he asked. Sakura’s eyes widened and she nodded.
“Ooooh yeah. Definitely.” She looked over at Koichi and said, “If you ever see something like that, like that orb, ignore it. Just…please. Ignore it.” Koichi wanted to ask why, but he had the feeling that she didn’t want to talk about it.
There was a quiet snickering sound coming from the corner. Koichi and Sakura both jumped and turned around. Everyone else had woken up and were watching them.
“Sakura and Koichi, sittin’ in a--” Takuya began, but Koji hit him in the back of the head, causing him to fall forward.
“Stop acting like a moron,” he said, and then added, “Oh wait. Sorry, you’re not acting.” Takuya growled at him and sat up, pouting. Sakura stood up, glaring at Takuya.
“WHY DO YOU ENJOY DOING THAT? DO YOU THINK IT’S FUN, MAKING FUN OF PEOPLE’S LIVES?” she yelled. Everyone gaped at her, including Koichi. He stood up.
“Sakura, are you…?” he started to ask.
“NO! I’M NOT OKAY!” she yelled. She turned to the opposite corner of the cave. Koichi looked there as well, confused.
“And YOU! STOP FOLLOWING ME!” she exclaimed. Koichi looked from her, to the corner, to her again. He glanced back at the corner and froze. A white orb floated there. The same orb they’d seen that evening. It slowly disappeared. Sakura fell to her knees and held her head.
“This isn’t happening…it’s not happening…” she murmured over and over again. Koichi hesitated, and then pulled her into a hug.
“You’ll be okay…” he said quietly. He heard her sobbing quietly.
“I just want him to leave me alone…” she cried softly, putting her head on his shoulder, “That’s all I want…”
Zoe stood up, a concerned look on her face. She ran over to where Koichi and Sakura sat, and gave Sakura a hug as well.
“Please don’t cry…” she said, “We’re here for you.” The others stood up, ran to where they were, and did the same.
“…thanks, you guys…” Sakura murmured, wiping a tear from her cheek. She inhaled, and said, “There’s…something I want to tell you all.” Everyone looked at her.
“Are you sure you want to tell them?” Koichi asked. Sakura nodded.
“Yeah. I’m sure.” She took a deep breath and said, “…I have the spirit of life.” There was silence.
“You’re…serious?” Takuya asked, a look of amazement on his face. Sakura nodded.
“I didn’t want to tell anyone at first…Koichi already knew, because he found out on his own…” she said.
“Well, Koji overheard us that night, so he knows, too…” Koichi said. Sakura nodded.
“And Koji. Yeah.” She paused, and then said, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner…” Zoe shook her head.
“It’s okay. If you didn’t want to talk about it, that’s none of our business,” she said. Sakura smiled.
“So, then…what was that orb?” Koichi asked. Sakura sighed.
“Do you remember when I said that Lucemon was Miraclemon’s twin?” she asked. Koichi nodded, half seeing where this was going.
“You mean that was…” he began, feeling his eyes widen. Sakura nodded sadly.
“That was him.” Everyone froze.
“Lucemon was just watching us?” J.P., Takuya, and Koji all said at the same time. Sakura nodded.
“I don’t know what he wants, but he’s been showing up like that ever since I got here…” she said quietly. Zoe stood up, a determined look on her face.
“Next time he shows up, we’ll show him a thing or two, right?” she said, looking at the others for support. They all said their approval excitedly.
“Yeah, we’ll make him wish he never messed with us!” Tommy said, grinning widely. Everyone laughed and started talking about what they would do when the strange orb showed up. Sakura smiled again.
“Thank you, everyone…” she thought.
“I’m going to kill that boy.”
Zero: Are you going to show violence this time?
Me: Oh, you're done killing your computer?
Zero: Yes...
Me: And I might. In answer to your question...
Kira: How do orbs GROWL?
Me: Aaaand here we go.
Kira: How's that even POSSIBLE?
Zero: I KNOW! They don't have mouths!
Me: Can't you guys just accept the fact that orbs growl?
Zero, Kira: (pout)
Me: I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter! I'll try to get the next one in as soon as I can.
