"You're grounded!" Stef sighed. She couldn't believe this. All she had said was ... well, let's not put it here. It was a bad word, trust me. She stomped up to her room and slammed the door. Her parents began their daily fight and it ended up with her father leaving and her mother drowning her sorrows in ice cream and MTV. Stef screamed into her pillow. Why was her life like this? When would it all end? She reached over to her bureau drawer and pulled out her small candy tin. Inside were chalky pills that she had gotten from school. She took one and breathed a sigh of relief.
The next day at school she met her friends behind the gym, as she usually did during gym class. They were smoking.
"Hey, Stef! Come join us!" Stef took one of her pills, and grabbed a cigarette.
Two hours later, she met someone on the street. The girl's name was Katie. The two girls had used to be best friends, but after Stef went the wrong way, they had drifted apart.
"You don't look too well, Stephanie." Katie's eyes told Stef that she was upset about it.
"What do you care, goody two shoes?" Stef winced at her own words. Why did she say that?
Katie sighed. "I brought you a book to read. It always helps me when I'm down."
Stef took the book and read the title. "The Lord of the Rings. This book is for babies!" She stomped off, but kept the book. She heard Katie whisper as she left.
"God, help Stephanie."
When Stef got home, she ran up the stairs and ignored her mother's question as to her whereabouts for the past two hours. She sat down on her bed and opened her tin. She took two pills and laid down.
She turned the book over in her hands. Should she read it? Katie always did have good taste. Stef started reading and forgot the time. When she finished the first section, it was past midnight.
The book had made her angry. How could those hobbits and elves be so happy, when she was so miserable? She threw the book and pulled her covers over her head.
"I don't need Middle-Earth. I don't need anyone." She took two more pills and went to sleep.
"Wake-up, My Lady." Stef's eyes hurt.
"Look, Mom. If you want something, you don't have to be a suck up." Stef shoved her pillow over her head.
"My Lady?" A handsome man stood at the foot of her bed. Wait, that wasn't her bed. The sheets were silk, and it had a canopy with gauzy curtains.
"Get away from my bed, you freak!" He looked shocked, but did as she said. "Where am I?"
"You are in your room, as you were when I left you yesterday. Is there something wrong, My Lady?"
Stef looked into her little hand mirror on her new wooden bureau. It was her face. What was wrong with this guy?
"What's my name?"
"You are Celemir, daughter of Elrond. Betrothed of Celebatar, prince of-"
"Yeah, okay, I get it." Her room was right next to a beautiful garden and there were no doors anywhere. She looked under the covers and found only her underwear, which was what she always slept in. "Hey stretch, will you scram while I get dressed?"
"I'm sorry, My Lady?"
"Umm, you know, disperse?" He looked confused. "Act like a tree and leave?" Nothing. Jeez, he was slow. "You're really slow, you know that?"
"Thank you, My Lady." She rolled her eyes.
"Why don't you do whatever you do after I get up in the morning?" He left. Thank you God.
Stef walked over to her wardrobe and opened the doors. She whistled at the costly gowns. She searched for some pants. None. Jeez, these people were SO old-fashioned. She picked the plainest one and put it on. She felt like a nun.
"Celemir? Where are you, my daughter?" A man came in from the open doorway leading to the garden.
Stef screamed. "Jeez! You look so freaky!" He reminded her of Dracula.
He was not amused. "Is that any way to speak to your father?"
Oops. "Oh, sorry, Daddykins. I didn't recognize you for a sec. What's up?"
"Are you feeling alright, my dear?"
You read my mind, Dad.
"Yeah, why?"
"Galdor said that you had a date with five bottles of Elvish wine last night. That would have killed any other elf. Iluvatar must be watching over you."
Uh oh. "Umm, excuse me, Daddykins. I gotta go do something." She ran back into her room. How could this be possible? Whoever this Celemir was had killed herself and now Stef had taken over her body! Great. And she had a math test today.
