Catherine walked into the locker room, but stopped short at the sight that greeted her. Warrick. More specifically, a half naked Warrick with droplets of water still clinging to his warm-hued skin. No matter how wrong it was, Catherine couldn't help starring.
"Decomps are a bitch, aren't they? Can't seem to get rid of the smell." Warrick's voice pulled her mind from it's wanderings.
"What? Oh, yeah," Catherine agreed. She turned towards her locker, taking longer then necessary to unlock it. In the week since Warrick's marriage, and her subsequent confession, she had managed to avoid being alone in the same room with him. Until now.
"So what's on the books today? You and Lindsey have anything planned?" Warrick questioned.
"No, Lindsey's spending the day with my sister." She forced herself to turn and face Warrick. They were still friends, she told herself, and she needed to remember that. He had pulled on a shirt, pale green like his eyes, and was now buttoning it up. Not yet able to meet his eyes, Catherine watched the simple movements of fingers and cloth and buttons. Suddenly, she realized something.
"Your ring," she spoke the thought out loud. The plain gold band that had been taunting her for the past week was missing. Warrick's eyes followed her gaze, and he shrugged.
"Yeah, turns out Brittany Spears isn't the only one who can do the 'temporary marriage thing' in Vegas."
"I'm sorry." Catherine was a little surprised by the honesty in her own voice. She was sorry. As shocking and disappointing as the news of his marriage had been, Catherine genuinely wanted only the best for Warrick. Ending a relationship was never a good experience, and she didn't want to see Warrick hurting.
"No big. It was a Carpe Diem kind of thing, not really something to base the rest of our lives on. Besides..." he stopped talking, gathering up his belongings and looking as if he was about to leave. Instinctually, Catherine knew that if he walked out now she might never hear the end of his thought. She needed to know what he had been about to say. Gently resting her fingers on his forearm, she stopped him.
"Besides what?" she asked softly, her eyes locked on his. Warrick blinked, twice, and then the features on his face relaxed.
"She's not the woman I'm in love with."
Catherine was silent for a long moment as his words sunk in.
"Shh, I know." He reached up and traced her jaw with his now bare ring finger. Catherine leaned into the touch, and might have reached for him if a sound hadn't pulled them apart. She cursed at the ill timed interruption.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Catherine opened her eyes to the dull half-light of her bedroom, the sound of the alarm pulling her from her dream. A sob escaped her, and a single tear rolled down her cheek as she lay in the empty bed, mourning the death of a fantasy.
