Hello!
This is a completely different story than I have ever written before. One major difference that makes it different than others is the chapter scheme.
Instead of going in chronological order, I’m going to mix the chapters completely up and you have to figure out what is going on. For three special days, after I put ten chapters up (this story has a total of twenty eight chapters) and complete it, I’m going to put them in order, for one day only. I don’t know when this date will be, because I don’t really know how long it will take me to put at least ten chapters up.
Summary: After a series of ghost attacks from the same ghosts, Danny seems to be falling for illusions more and more and spending more time fighting them, then with his girlfriend Sam. After a massive fight, Danny tries to make things better, but only makes things worse when his new enemies reappear. And a force darker than a heart break is working it’s way into each of them.
Disclaimers: Danny Phantom is owned by Butch Hartman and Nickelodeon Studios. “Somewhere in Between” is owned by Lifehouse.
Somewhere In Between
Chapter Eighteen
Don’t be surprised if I collapse…down at your feet again
“Fine. It’s a deal.”
Danny didn’t dare move, waiting for the ghost to respond. Another jolt of pain went through his arm and he tried not to grimace.
“So you’d give up everything…just for this girl?” Eltraeo asked. “Shouldn’t you ever stop to consider everything you’ve done?”
“Sam’s life is more important to me,” he muttered.
“This Sam doesn’t even care, does she?” Eltraeo whispered, smiling wickedly. “All the work you’ve done, the lives you’ve saved. She doesn’t care and she never will. And you’re about to throw it all away for her?”
“Shut up!” Danny hissed, his eyes changing to green immediately. His cheeks turned a bright shade of red.
“It is quite obvious you love her. If she feels the same, why doesn’t she give you the chance to apologize? What makes her so special?” Danny didn’t say anything at first, but he was about to when Eltraeo began speaking again.
“Sam doesn’t deserve you. Look at all you’ve done. Does she appreciate it at all?”
“I know she does--”
“Does she tell you that…or are you assuming this?”
“I know Sam, she wouldn’t--”
“Do you know Sam? Or do you only think you know her?” Eltraeo walked in front of Danny, circling him. His fingers tapped together and he watched the silent teen, an unreadable expression on his face. “What will she do when she finds out what you’ve done?”
“She’ll be happy…” Danny trailed off.
“Exactly. She’ll be happy knowing that everything is back to normal. After all…she couldn’t possibly love you for who you are.”
“Stop!” he suddenly shouted. “I know what you’re doing and it’s not working.”
“Really? So I’m not showing you everything there is to see about this girl that you’re so madly in love with? Open your eyes Halfa. Does Sam really love you…or is she just waiting to rip out your heart once again? What is your own broken heart telling you?”
Danny closed his eyes. Every part of his body was numb, but his mind seemed alive with constant thoughts.
“That’s it…Sam was the one who broke your heart,” Eltraeo continued. “She didn’t even want to listen. I’m listening now…Every thought you have is running through my mind. And whether you admit it or not, you’re starting to finally see my point.”
“That’s a lie!” Danny shouted.
“Is it really?” Eltraeo snapped his fingers next to Danny’s ears. In the next second, his baby blue eyes glazed over.
He looked up, hearing a noise from the shadows. Within the darkness, two lilac irises stared at him like fire. The figure moved and he could make out the skinny, curvy frame of a familiar girl.
“Sam?” he gasped.
“Ah, it appears we have a guest,” Eltrao said gleefully.
“Danny,” Sam whispered, barely audible.
“Sam…you need to leave!” he said desperately, watching to be aware of any movement from the ghost. But Eltraeo didn’t move.
“Why?” she said, her expression blank.
“There’s the ghost. My powers--” he began.
“He won’t hurt me,” Sam cut him off by saying. “Not many people can hurt me like you did.”
“What?” he asked, confused.
“I heard every word that you just said,” she hissed, her body tensed in anger. “Having second thoughts Danny? Do you really enjoy being a ghost more than being with me?”
“No, Sam, listen! That’s not what I said,” he corrected, standing on his feet. He wondered why Eltraeo wasn’t doing anything.
“Liar!” she shouted.
“No, Sam, you have to believe me,” he pleaded, reaching for her. She pulled away defiantly.
“I did believe you! And now what! You’ve betrayed me. Things would have been better if you never would have become a ghost. In fact, things would be better if we have never met!” she growled.
“Please, Sam--”
“Go save yourself Danny.”
He grabbed for her hand and closed his in with hers. But she suddenly disappeared into thin air and he was grasping onto nothing.
His eyes instantly changed back as he snapped out of the trance. Realizing what had happened, he rounded on Eltraeo, his eyes glowing furiously.
“You!” he snapped, stepping forwards. His fingers clenched into fists by his sides.
“Stop.” With that simple command, he snapped his fingers before he could come any closer. Ropes materialized in the air and bound Danny’s arms and feet together tightly. He stumbled and crashed to the ground hard.
“Temper, temper,” he said, clucking his tongue. He rubbed his chin. “And to think…that was only an illusion.”
Danny didn’t reply, sitting up awkwardly. The ropes cut into his wrists sharply. His broken arm felt like it was on fie.
“An illusion of what would happen if you made the decision,” Eltraeo continued.
“Sam lives. That’s my final decision,” Danny said. “And nothing is going to change that.
“I’m sure you feel that way now--” Eltraeo began.
The door to the basement flew open, ricocheting off the wall. For a minute, Danny thought it was an illusion when he saw her. But something told him it wasn’t.
“Sam!” he exclaimed, trying to sit up better. He froze, hearing the faintest of clicks near his ear.
“Danny,” she said, relieved. She stepped into the moonlight, her face pale and tear streaked. Letting out a gasp, she stopped in her tracks.
Eltraeo pressed a black metal gun to Danny’s head. “You’re just in time for the grand finale. This may be a show, but--” He pulled his finger back threateningly on the trigger. “—this won’t be an illusion.”
I hope I didn’t reveal too much. I put Danny and Sam through so much. But unlike my other stories, this story does not have sneak peeks, sorry. Please R&R!
