This chapter may be a bit shorter, I can tell you that now. I’m hoping to get it at least three pages if I’m lucky, but the next chapter after that is longer, so…not that you’ll get it until…looks like number sixteen.

Somewhere In Between
Chapter Fourteen
And I’m somewhere in between…
Sam regretted every step closer towards the Fenton home she took. Her whole body trembled, but she knew she had to do this. Every thought she had told her to run away screaming that she couldn’t do this. That she couldn’t face him after what she’d said to him.
But it was too late. Her hand was knocking on their door before she’d even really decided on what to do. It was now or never. There was no stopping her broken heart from at least trying to repair itself.
The door opened and Jazz poked her head out, her eyes narrowing as she caught sight of her standing there. “Hi,” she said, her tone almost suspicious.
Sam hadn’t been before, but now she expected his older sister to be hostile. Jazz was very protective of Danny and obviously didn’t like seeing him hurt the way he was. But it was this thought that made her writhe inside.
“Is Danny…here?”
“He…he can’t talk right now, I’m sorry,” she replied.
“Jazz, I just need to talk to him. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.”
“Come in,” she suddenly insisted. “But I want to talk first.”
Sam wasn’t surprised at the request after she heard it and walked inside hesitantly, looking around for Danny as if he might be somewhere in sight.
“He’s not feeling well,” Jazz told her, noticing her gaze. “He fainted after you left.”
“What?” she gasped. But the second part of the statement confused her. “After I left? Left where?”
She stared and bit her lip. “That’s what I don’t get either. He told me that you were here…this was only about forty-forty five minutes ago.”
“I…I wasn’t here,” she said.
“I know…I was here the whole time, but he swears up and down…Look, that’s not what’s important right now. The fact is…There’s something going on here.”
“I say such stupid things without thinking,” she said. “If anything, I’m the cause of this and that’s why I need to talk to him.”
“Why do you suddenly want him to get rid of his ghost powers?” Jazz inquired.
Her question threw Sam for a loop and she stared. “Excuse me? What are you talking about?”
“I have never…seen him this lost before.” The redhead averted her gaze, staring coldly at the wall. “Before he collapsed, he talked about getting rid of them. Asked me if…something about wanting to be a ghost if a choice. And he said you’d probably be happier with him being normal again.”
“That’s not true. I never said…I never said I wanted him to get rid of his ghost powers,” she said. Her voice cracked and she held back tears. “God…I was getting lonely…and I was tired of ghosts interfering with everything. And I knew…somewhere within me, that he had to. I just didn’t want him to suddenly. But I would never…ask him to get rid of them to make me happy…”
“Something is really going on,” Jazz said. “And I don’t think it’s just you anymore. Not you or Danny. Someone…or something else in involved. Why else would Danny think you were here when you really weren’t?”
Sam had to take this in. “Why would someone go through so much? To try and get us apart?”
“I think it’s something deeper. If someone…wait a second,” she said. “You weren’t down there. But someone else was—someone…someone who wants you two away from each other…maybe his powers or something!” She stood on her feet.
“For what?” Sam asked, trying to keep up.
“I don’t know…but what would be the perfect excuse for Danny to really give them up…unless he knew someone he loved didn’t like it anymore…”
“I keep seeing…these things in my head,” she said. “I think someone’s messing with us both. And it worked. Someone’s trying to really pull us apart…”
“Danny’s got to hear this,” Jazz said.
“Oh, my gosh…I fell right into it all,” she said, collapsing onto the arm of the couch. “All the things I said…that…came from me…No one made me say that.”
Jazz finally looked at her with sympathy in her blue-green eyes. “Come on, let’s go talk to Danny. We’ll fix this…neither of you deserve this if someone is doing this on purpose.”
“Jazz, you don’t understand. I said…such horrible things. I can’t see him,” she said. “I can’t face him. Not knowing…that everything I said…was true…but I really said it.”
“Okay,” Jazz said. “I’ll—I’ll go see if he’s okay.” She looked like she was going to say something else, but didn’t and instead, turned to head up the stairs, her footsteps thundering on the carpeting.
Sam couldn’t believe any of it. She shivered, curling one knee to her chest for the comfort that wouldn’t come. None of this should be happening. Who would do something like try and break her and Danny up? For the hell of it?
Whatever the reason was...she’d fallen right into it. They both had. Whatever the plan had been, she’d gone for it. She’d given up everything they had…
“Danny?” Jazz’s voice wondered from in the hall.
Sam looked up and headed towards the stairs. “What’s wrong?”
She stared back before walking right into Danny’s room and gasped. “Darn it Danny,” she heard Jazz say.
Sam rushed up the stairs, following her. “What’s wrong?”
“He’s gone,” she replied, clutching her head with her hands. “He must have…he must have gotten away while I was downstairs.” She referred to the open window. “I thought I heard a car, but I thought I was going nuts or it was the neighbors…I didn’t even think…”
“Where do you think he went?” she asked, swallowing hard.
“I have no idea…” she grumbled. She rubbed her arms. “I thought he was asleep. Danny…”
“Why…why didn’t he fly?”
His sister turned sharply towards her and she closed her eyes, automatically regretting the question and immediately sensing the answer.
“His powers…aren’t working correctly,” she said. “He’s emotional.” She sighed. “I’m going to see if I can get his cell phone.”
At her exact words, Sam’s rang in her pocket, vibrating against her skin and she contemplated answering it, but then wondered…by some chance, if it was Danny. When she pulled it out into the open, Jazz walked out of the room and back down the stairs.
Feeling hurt, dazed, and very confused, Sam pressed the phone to her ear. “Hello?”
“Do you know where your boyfriend is? Cause I do…”
Please R&R! The next chapter is one I’ve been wanting to do for a while. The first chapter…where someone else is the bad guy… Yes, that’s right. Danny’s the bad one now. I’m trying to even the score. So, it’s chapter 22 and then…it’s chapter 10, another round in the big fight.
