Chapter 1: In which John make a startling discovery
I was having a dream about a tropical island, sweet breakers, and girls in very tiny bikinis when my alarm went off. Eyes still closed, I reached across the bed to where my night table was to hit the snooze button. Instead of hitting it, all I felt was the rough fabric of my sheets. I rolled over to get myself a little closer and reached for the snooze again; I hit more sheets.
Even in my sleep-addled state, I knew something was off. Should Atlantis ever be put up on the real estate market, its selling point would not be it's expansive furniture. My bed wasn't even a Full; my arms reached the entire length, let alone the width.
I opened my eyes cautiously. The ceiling looked the same; then again, all the ceilings looked vaguely similar in Atlantis. I sat up and looked around.
I was definitely not in my room. The bed I was in was large-at least queen-sized. I'd never had a bed that big in my life. The room was different as well-larger, expansive almost-with different furniture, and my gear was not where I always left it. I scanned the room and found that the only thing that was the same was the Johnny Cash picture over the bed. The thing I found the most disturbing though was that there was an indentation next to me, the sort made by another body. This was not the sort of information I could process before noon, especially when my head felt like Ronan had used it as a punching bag.
I swung my legs over the side and cradled my head in my hands, racking my brain for what had happened the night before. I couldn't recall any alcohol being involved-certainly not enough for me to change rooms and furniture and not notice. Besides, the last time I got trashed, I seemed to recall loud music, very tight leather on a girl whose name I didn't know, and drag racing...the rest was sort of hazy. As far as I could remember, moving all my belongings didn't enter into that.
I stood up and rubbed my face with one hand and abruptly stopped.
I was wearing a ring.
I was wearing a gold wedding band and I'd be damned if I knew how it got there.
