Chapter One

Predator and Prey

They gave me a life that’s not so easy to live

And then they sent me on my way

“I’m not scared of anything,” Valerie Gray said in answer to Mr. Lancer’s literature question. Her green eyes stared back at him, as if challenging him to doubt her.

“Fear is an ultimate emotion,” Mr. Lancer continued. “Some have it, and others don’t. Most people don’t realize they have a fear until they’re faced with a life and death situation. Most people are afraid of dying.”

He went to the chalkboard in front of him and wrote, “Deep,” and “Shallow,” in block letters with a piece of yellow chalk. Turning back around, Mr. Lancer stared at them patiently. “Can anyone tell me the difference between deep fears and shallow fears?”

Several hands went into the air, but as usual, Mr. Lancer called on someone he thought wasn’t paying attention.

“Mr. Foley, can you explain the difference between these two types of fear?” he said with a small grin.

“Umm…” Tucker said. “Shallow fears are the things that you don’t really fear…like spiders or storms. And deep fears are things that you can like be scared to death from.”

“And what are you afraid of Mr. Foley?” Lancer asked.

“That one day every piece of beautiful technology in this world will be gone from existence and I’ll have nothing to work with,” he replied honestly.

A few people, including his best friends, Sam Manson and Danny Fenton, burst into laughter.

Lost from within, pursuing the end

I fight for the chance to be lied to again

“Well, that’s a different perspective, that’s for sure,” Lancer muttered. “Mr. Fenton, same question.”

Danny shifted in his desk chair nervously. “I don’t know…” he replied.

“You’re not afraid of dying?” he asked.

“I guess so. In a way, yes,” he admitted.

“So if you could walk around as a ghost, would you?” Lancer asked.

Danny tried not to laugh, thinking it would be too obvious if he did. However, Sam and Tucker couldn’t resist, and hid their faces in their arms.

“In this town?” Danny finally said. “Definitely not.” A few people laughed, including Valerie and Lancer.

“Very amusing,” Lancer said sincerely. “In the story, Tornado’s Warp, a young teenager is faced with her greatest fears as she tries to do the unthinkable. Kristine Fischer is the main character in this story. She’s a powerful witch who goes into an abandoned, broken down school that was devastated by a tornado fifteen years from the time she was born. The four students that were killed in the tornado became ghosts. Unable to move onto into another dimension, they were trapped in a warp. The four ghosts were all teenagers.”

He wrote their names down on the board, in a mini chart next to ‘deep’ and ‘shallow.’ “Savannath, Alex, Evan, and Danny.” Tucker nudged Danny, sitting in front of him, with his elbow and Danny shook his head, rolling his baby blue eyes.

“Now, if you did the reading, which I’m sure most of you did,” he said sarcastically. “Why can’t these--”

The intercom clicked on suddenly and Principal Ishyama’s voice echoed through the room. “Mr. Lancer?”

“Yes?” Lancer replied, looking annoyed at the interruption.

“Could you send Daniel Fenton and Valerie Gray down to the office? Someone is here to see them.”

Lancer nodded to the two. “They’re on their way.”

“They’ll need to bring their things,” she added.

“Alright,” Lancer said.

Valerie and Danny exchanged glances, but packed up their things anyway. Lancer stopped them just as they were about to leave the room.

“Homework, finish reading chapter three of the story in your book,” he told them. Danny made a face, hoping that he could remember…and have time to do it in the first place.

They left the room, closing the door behind them and began walking towards their lockers first.

“What was that all about?” Valerie asked.

“I don’t know,” Danny replied. “Who would want to see us?”

“I’m going to find out,” she said. “This was unexpected. And I’m getting used to the unexpected.” She stopped at her locker in the sophomore hallway and started doing

I feel helpless…waiting

Could this all…be the end?

her combination. He did the same thing, a few lockers down. She laughed, glancing at him. “So…you don’t know what you’re afraid of, huh?”

He shrugged, blushing slightly. “I’ve never really thought about it. I suppose dying would scare me, but it’s just…a normal occurrence.”

“You mean you die every day?” Valerie asked. “That didn’t make any sense.”

He laughed uncomfortably. “That’s not what I meant, but it doesn’t matter.” He pulled his backpack out of his locker and shoved his English book into it.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Hmm?”

“You look exhausted. Get any sleep lately?” Danny looked up and saw that she was seriously concerned.

He shrugged. “I’ve just had stuff to do. Like homework,” he grumbled. At least that was part of the truth.

“Yeah,” she said. She slipped her bag onto her shoulder. “I guess I’ve been pretty busy as well.”

Danny bit back saying a comment aloud, but couldn’t stop himself from thinking it. Yeah, trying to kick my butt…

He joined her walking down the hall towards the principal’s office now. As his human self, she seemed to be his friend. When he went ghost, she was his enemy. He had to admit that it was getting weird, trying to keep it all secret. If she knew….he couldn’t begin to imagine what torture he’d be put through.

They both walked into the office. Principal Ishyama smiled at them. “You both have a guest,” she told them. “He’s right in there and he’s asked to see you both privately.” Valerie and Danny exchanged nervous glances. “Go on ahead.”

“Thanks,” Valerie said.

She led the way and Danny followed closely. She opened the door to the room and they both walked inside.

“Hello?” Valerie asked.

The room was totally empty. She stared around confused. Danny looked around, a similar expression on his face.

Suddenly, the door slammed behind them with a loud snap. They both whipped around to see a familiar figure standing there, right before the stranger grabbed their hands together in his own.

Danny saw a pair of red eyes right before a surge of electricity shocked through his entire body. He cried out in pain and felt his body go limp, giving into the pain.

But times have changed…and so have you

I think I’d rather crucify then learn…

Danny groaned, waking up slowly. He heard several voices, but they didn’t make sense at first…then in a sudden memory flash, his eyes snapped open fast. He gasped and tried to move his hands, but then realized they were strapped down by restraints.

“Ah, Daniel. You’re awake…for now,” said a voice.

“What do you want Plasmius?” he asked, tugging against the ropes around his wrists, tying him down to the table he was laid against.

“Always asking questions,” Vlad said, smiling wickedly. “It does get boring after a while.”

“If you would answer them, maybe I wouldn’t ask so many,” Danny retaliated. He glanced around and saw Valerie on another metal table a few feet away.

“You like my new experiment?” Vlad asked, watching him.

“Where are we?” he asked.

“Well, I suppose I can ask that since it won’t help you any knowing,” he said. “You’re at my castle. Rebuilt, refurnished, and absolutely grand. Welcome back.”

“What are you doing?” Danny asked.

“I suppose I really should have said, welcome to the new Plasmic Virtuality Generator. A virtual reality game where your worst fears come to life. Twenty levels that test your abilities, strengths, limits…”

“And we’re your guinea pigs,” Danny muttered.

“Oh, Daniel, stop trying to break free. Even with your ghost powers, you won’t be able to break those,” Vlad said. “Besides…we’re about to begin.”

“Begin what?” Danny asked.

“You really just don’t think right sometimes,” he said. He walked over towards him and Danny saw something that looked rather like a syringe in his hands. He yanked against the ropes. “Oh, relax.”

“What are you going to get out of this?” Danny demanded, ignoring him completely and trying to move his legs.

Vlad stuck the needle straight into his neck and Danny yelled in both anger and pain. “Get away from….”

Whatever it was that had been in the needle seemed to effect him immediately. His vision spun and his thoughts jumbled in his head like a train wreck.

“Oh, by the way…I guess it’s a good thing you won’t be able to use your powers in front of Valerie now….have fun….”

Vlad’s voice steadily grew more distant. And Danny’s world shrouded into darkness.

A least a million times I’ve fallen…

But never will I break..

This story mainly involves only Valerie, Danny, and Vlad. The others don’t come in only on the first and last chapters, unless their names are mentioned, but of course, that’s different.

LeveL One (Chapter two)

“You still don’t get it, do you? I’ll never leave your side. I’m in your worst nightmares, your darkest thoughts. You’ll never get rid of me, even if you try. Because…no matter what…I’m still you.”

“I will never become you!” Danny shouted.

……………………………….

“Dead girls dance, they burn and twirl. Witch cunt, witch hunt, burn this girl,” the little girl chanted over again.

Valerie clapped her hands to her ears. “Shut up! You’re not real…you’re not real…”
