Greg tensed, here he was at another crime scene. Same old same old. Except this was personal to him. How could it not be when his girlfriend was strewn across her bed like a play boy model, her face bashed in and her back riddled with bullet holes.

Janine, she had been sweet but way to trusting. That’s probably how her killer had got into her apartment, he or she had lied to her maybe told her the old “ I’m here to fix your gas” which had been the famous words of a Vegas serial killer that had struck a while back.

Greg closed his eyes, this was all just too much. His heart beat rapidly and his eyes threatened to pour tears but he knew he couldn’t. Grissom was examining the body, his face set in a deep frown. Greg knew that Grissom didn’t know how Greg knew the victim, Greg had arrived after Grissom with Sara who was now currently searching for evidence.

“ Greg, are you going to get to work then?” Grissom asked and Greg jumped to attention.

With a nod he opened his field-case and got to work fingerprinting the door handle of Janine’s bedroom. When he was done he stepped over to fingerprint her bedside table, as he passed by her dead body her words floated over to him;

C’mon Greg, just one kiss. I love you.”

Greg closed his eyes.

“ You okay?” Sara asked, concern etched into her face.

Greg looked about to nod then sprinted out the room to vomit in the hallway. He clutched his chest as tears rolled down his cheeks.

Falling to the floor he covered his face as Grissom stepped up to him;

“ Greg? Do you need a moment?”

Greg kept silent, his hands hiding him from Grissom’s curious stare.

“ Greg, talk to me. Do you know this woman?” Grissom sounded more demanding now and Greg removed his hands to gaze bleary-eyed up at his boss who intimidated him to no end.

Greg nodded;

“ She’s my girlfriend.”

“ Grissom!;” Sara called out from the bedroom; “ I’ve found signs of object rape!”

“Oh god!” Greg rolled over onto his side.

“ Go back to the lab Greg, you can’t work this case.”

“ Grissom;” Greg wiped his eyes. That was his girlfriend in there, he needed to find her justice. Justice for Janine. “ I want to stay on the case.”

“ You know you can’t do that, it’s policy that there can be no personal ties to the victim.”

Greg nodded, he understood the rules well enough;

“ At least let me analyze the evidence you and Sara find.”

“ Greg-“ Grissom began but Greg stood up, cutting him off;

“ Please Grissom.”

Grissom surveyed the young man in front of him. So much passion and dedication to his job, Grissom knew that Greg could be a little extreme but he could handle this to some extent;

“ Fine.”
