Song playing: “Makes me wanna pray” by: Christina Aguilera

It was as if time seemed to take an everlasting rest, never wanting to start once again. Well, if it didn’t stop, it was certainly passing at an incredibly slow rate.

The silence lingered heavily as the children continued to stare. The girl fidgeted nervously, clenching and unclenching her vibrant scarf, which seemed to be a developed nervous habit.

“I-I’m sorry,” she hung her head, innocent eyes downcast to the elegant church hall floor. “If you don’t want to do it… I understand completely.”

Hiro mentally smacked himself across the face, feeling

instantly guilty about causing this small girl any pain whatsoever, even it was something small or as insignificant as awkwardness.

“No! Your fine, really!” Hiro tried to smile reassuringly, though it was harder than it seemed, for Hiro wasn’t used to be so friendly towards people. Nor was he good at it for that matter.

But, even though he literally knew nothing about this girl, there was something special about her, more than just her beautiful and breath taking singing voice. Something he wanted to protect… to keep from harm…. To…

“…so, could you do that for me?” A timid question brought back Hiro from the depths of his mind, oblivious that he just completely tuned out the poor girl.

“Uhhh! Yeah, whatever you say!” Hiro saw that her small index finger was pointed towards the door leading into the choir and music loft, where musicians usually practiced. With that gesture, it clicked with Hiro that she wanted him to unlock the door.

As he started to unlock the door, he could feel her watching him intently, but not in a leering, uncomfortable way. It was more of an observation; maybe even curiosity. Either way, Hiro was starting to feel somewhat nervous.

“Do you have something to say to me?!” Out of his embarrassment, he snapped at the poor girl, who hoped a little bit in shock at his outburst.

“Go-gomen na sai, I didn’t mean any harm,” Kisa apologized softly, bowing. “I was… wondering about your name. May I please have it?”

She’s still nice, even after I yelled at her… Hiro thought, guilt stinging his heart a bit.

“Its… Hiro,” Hiro muttered pushing the heavy door towards him, causing the door to groan miserably, due to its age. “What’s your name?”

Kisa smiled pleasantly towards her new friend. “Oh, my name is Kisa. I’m... glad we are friends already.”

This comment caused a blush to ignite on Hiro’s face, for Kisa’s comment to throw him off guard.

“Wh-what?! How can you say that already?!” Hiro roared, as Kisa cheerfully climbed the stairs, which was a little bit ahead of him. “We just met!”

Kisa turned her head around, and tilted it a little bit towards her shoulder, a sweet smile on her face. “But you’re helping me. Don’t friends help each other?”

Hiro said nothing, and just turned his head away in embarrassment, not used to girls being so nice to him.

Usually, they both just giggled and stared at him (which annoyed the hell outta of him) or yelled mean, teasing remarks from a far. But none of them were as sweet or innocent as this Kisa.

And, even just meeting her, she was already filling his cold heart with a bit of warmth. It wasn’t much; it was really just a bit. But it was enough to make a significant difference.

What’s wrong with her anyways?! Hiro growled mentally, stomping up the old stairs to the choir loft. Being the immature pre-teen boy he was, he decided to put his feelings into denial for a while, just because he didn’t understand them. She talks to me like we’ve been friends for ages or something. There must be something wrong with her…

“Hiro-chan!” When he reached the top, a soft voice called to him from the far side of the loft, which could have been mistaken for the flutter of bird’s wings.

“Hi-Hiro-chan?! What’s with the chan?!” Hiro shouted, feeling flustered and outraged with the affectionate name. The only other person who ever called him that was his air head for a mother.

“It seems to suit you! Now, where did that sheet music go…?” Kisa rummaged in what seemed to be a secret compartment that was attached to the piano bench (a:n: You know those piano benches that when you lift the top, there’s sheet music inside? Yeah, that’s what she’s looking through)

“Suit me?!” Hiro couldn’t believe his ears. He wasn’t small, feminine, or cute! Chan suited KISA not him! “How did you come to that conclusion?”

Kisa giggled softly as she pulled out the sheet music she was looking for.

“Because… you’re so nice, Hiro-chan. And I like you!”

The words ‘I like you’, snuck in HARD, which caused poor Hiro to blush once again.

“S-So what?!” Embarrassed and a loss of words, Hiro stubbornly and immaturely turned his back on the confused little girl.

Don’t use ‘like’ so lightly, baka. Stop making my heart race like this. Stop…

“Did I offend you somehow?” Hiro was starting to notice she was becoming a little less shy with him as they talked more. “Gomen na sai, I dind’t mean to.”

“Nahh, its okay, Kisa. I’m just stupid I guess…” Hiro turned around and stared at the floor.

It was silent for a moment, then suddenly, Kisa started to sing; singing in that glorious and beautiful voice which filled every nook and cranny in the empty church.

It was as if she was an angel herself as she sang. The way she seemed so happy, the way her smile was formed, the aura gave off, just everything.

And for that moment, Hiro felt small, like an ant. And Kisa was the big, scary kid that was about to squish his little powerless self.

But of course, Hiuro already knew that Kisa wasn’t the type to kill anything, not even a small ant.

10 mintues later…

Hiro couldn’t help but feel sad as she concluded her song. And as she did, she let out a small little sigh, sounding like a child needing rest after a long day of playing outside.

She turned towards the wide eyed and hypnotized Hiro, obviously wanting an opinion.

“Did you like my song, Hiro-chan?” Kisa asked, a small blush forming on her cheeks. “I think I messed up a little bit during the chorus, but…”

“It was amazing,” Hiro interrupted; amazed that Kisa could find a flaw in her heavenly singing. “I didn’t notice any mistakes.” He gave her a warm, authentic smile, which caused Kisa to blush from his honest opinion.

“Thank you, Hiro-chan. Its good to hear an honest… and kind answer.” For a moment, she turned away a bit sadly.

Nani? Whats wrong?”

Kisa sat next to him on the pew, twisting her scarf once again.

“It’s just… my confidence has been drained just a bit in my singing ability today.”

Hiro was itching to know, but he didn’t want to pry through her personal matters, so fought to keep his mouth shut.

But to his surprise, it was Kisa who opened her mouth first.

“Do you mind if I tell you? I hadn’t talked to anyone about it all day, and my heart is starting to grow heavy from keeping it inside.”

Hiro nodded, and smiled.

“I’ll listen to every word!” he replied loyally, surprised at himself for sounding so enthusiastic.

“Well… I was practicing my solo for the upcoming Christmas concert- It’s called the Holly and the Ivy-, and suddenly, my cousin, Haru-nii, started to listen. I didn’t mind, so I continued. But when I was reaching the end, he… cut me off.”

“What do you mean?” Hiro asked, resting his chin in one hand, his eyes never leaving Kisa’s face.

“…He interrupted me. Which is very unlike Haru-nii, for he is a very kind and gentle person. So of course, I was surprised. But… what he said hurt my feelings.”

“Which was…?”

Kisa sighed, her eyes downcast to the floor. Obviously, this was hard for her to repeat, and Hiro, once again, felt guilty for making her suffer.

“ ‘Your singing that song all wrong, maybe you should get voice lessons.’” As she reached the end of her sentence, she sighed sadly.

“What?!” Hiro couldn’t believe his ears. “Where does he get the NERVE to say that to you?! It pisses me off!” Hiro was now shouting, which he was completely unaware of.

Kisa, utterly surprised, quickly turned her eyes in Hiro’s direction, who was only a few inches away from her face now.

“Dammit, where is he?! I’ll kick his butt!” Hiro got up from the pew and cracked his knuckles menacingly. “We’ll do it together, Kisa!”

Kisa’s eyes grew wide, and grabbed Hiro’s arm.

“Hiro-chan, no! I won’t let you! And that’s not I wanted you to do!”

This caused Hiro to stop and stare at Kisa curiously.

“Well… what do you want me to do?” he asked, his head cocked to the right slightly.

Kisa looked up into his eyes, the most innocent expression crossing over her features.

“I’m wondering what it could possibly mean.” Kisa told him honestly. “I want to know why he would say something like that.”

Hiro stopped and turned away.

He wasn’t good at giving advice; if he tried, it might be something totally stupid, and he didn’t want to risk giving Kisa.

“Maybe… its something you have to discover for yourself, Kisa.” Hiro said kindly, giving her a warm smile. “To be honest, I don’t know myself.”

Kisa blinked, then returned the smile.

“Arigatou, wakata…” (Thank you, I understand…)

She left Hiro’s side and started to gather her things together.

“Thank you once again, Hiro-chan! I hope you come to the Christmas concert!”

With a gentle smile and a wave, Kisa went downstairs, disappearing from Hiro’s sight like a ray of fading light.
