He’s used to detritus. The gnarled hook of a talon, the shards of a horn, or the charred remains of angel’s wings, it all becomes waste in the wake of his work. Just crap that comes when asshole half-breeds are sent down below where they belong. It’s all the same. Rotten. Dirty.

But this …this is different.

For the first time in his life, the things that are left behind have beauty. Purpose. Meaning.

The red shoe with its chunky heel that prods him in the back when the leans against his narrow cot. The double set of chopsticks on the kitchen table, the tips of one pair turned brown by an overindulged love for soy sauce.

They’re the things she leaves behind.

He gets up and grabs a plastic takeout bag, throwing in the shoes and utensils, hurling the sac through the window down to the dumpster in the alley below.

But the movements are all in his mind. In his fucked up reality he’s still on the floor against his bed, staring at high heels and stains.

And when he sniffs the hairbrush she’s left to smell her scent, he knows that not everything left behind is trash.
