Chapter Sixteen
An Electric Heartbreak
“When can I see him?”
Restless, Sam couldn’t help but squirm on the bed as her arm was fit up against a splint, much to her doctor’s displeasure.
“Miss, please hold still. He’ll be fine. They’ve got him stabilized for now,” Doctor Francine Myers replied.
“I need to see him,” she insisted, trembling.
“Samantha, it’s alright. Calm down,” she said, her tone more soothing. “If you don’t calm down you might go into shock.”
Sam bit her lip, trying to sit still and calm down like the doctor had instructed, but her mind was screaming on the inside. She was purely terrified.
She’d ridden with him in the ambulance and to the hospital and she’d been there at least twenty minutes and she hadn’t seen Danny ever since. Panic was rising within her at the thought that she might lose him.
A light was shone into her eyes and she gasped, jerking back in shock. Dr. Myers put a hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay…I’m sorry, I should have warned you. Can you hold your eyes open for me for a second?”
She did as she was told and the doctor talked to her softly. “Did you hit your head or have any other injuries?”
“No,” she said, shaking her head at the same time. “Just my arm…”
“No burns, scratches, anything?” she asked.
“No, I’m fine…” she said. The doctor finally finished setting her arm and let her go gently. “Can I see him now?”
“We need to locate his family first. That’s their decision since you’re not a family member,” she told her. “But when they get here, that’s fine.”
“Is he okay?” she asked. Please tell me he’s okay…
“He will be okay, don’t worry, okay? Just stay here until his family get here, alright?” Dr. Myers always seemed to have the questions, but never the right answers.
Sam sighed and nodded, watching as the woman left the room, going into the main hallway. She flexed her fingers, split between the black cast-like material, and stared around absentmindedly, shaking.
A new fear had started to come over her. He hadn’t responded to what the paramedics had tried…How many people did she know that lived through an electrocution…or lived after the fact? She knew the deadliness of getting an electrical shock. Fatal for the most part…
And it had been to save her…
The thought occurred to her that he was more of a hero than she realized. And it wasn’t her own experience…her own life that he’d protected. She thought about the story that he’d told her…the one secret he’d kept from her.
The explosion… Had he really had anything to do with it? The ghost, whoever it had been, had threatened to kill his family and he’d tried to stop him and had nearly lost his life in the process.
All of it…just to save someone else…
She closed her eyes, feeling tears brim to her eyes that didn’t fall, but just remained there, burning. Her heart broke within her to realize…she would never meet someone like Danny.
She couldn’t lose him…
………………………………
Sam must have fallen asleep because she didn’t remember what had happened after that agonizing hour. It was nearly three a.m. and she wondered where the time had gone. She felt like it was going painfully slow, but somehow it had managed to surpass her.
Either way, she desired badly to be near Danny. She didn’t care whether or not she was allowed to see him…she needed him. Desperately. She needed to know he was okay. He had to be okay.
She rushed into the hallway and nearly ran into a nurse coming from the other direction. “Sorry,” she said hurriedly.
“That’s alright. Miss, are you okay?” she asked, her voice high pitched and young.
“Do you know what room Danny Fenton is? He’s eighteen years old--”
“Was he brought in about…two, three hours ago?” she asked.
“Yes,” Sam replied. “Is he okay?”
“We don’t get cases like this all the time.” Without question, the girl handed her something. “The electrocution caused a premature heart attack.”
She couldn’t hold in a gasp. “W-what?”
“For now, we’ve got him stable and he’s awake. He’ll be physically weak for a few days and of course,” she said.
Sam swallowed with difficulty. “He’ll be alright…” It didn’t occur to her until a second later that the nurse had given her all the information without a single question. She raised an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.
“I think he could use some visitors. Especially his sister,” the nurse said, patting her on the arm. “Room 728, down the hall and to your right.”
Sam would have burst into laughter had she not been so miserable and so relieved at the same time. So that’s why the nurse was telling her all of this. She thought they were siblings. She failed to see the resemblance, but she didn’t blow her secret, figuring that if she’d gotten some information from someone, then it really didn’t matter all that much.
“Thanks,” she said as the nurse walked away.
Another thought hit her. The only reason someone would assume they were related…was if there was actually a relative here…Meaning—Jazz had to be here.
She rushed down the hallway, steering clear of any doctors and/or nurses that were walking and stood in the doorway.
Jazz and Tucker were both there to her surprise, sitting on opposite sides of Danny, who lay, deathly pale and rigid in a hospital bed, dark circles under his eye and wires hooked up to his arm. His eyes were darker than normal and exhausted, but with the same unchanging happiness.
She smiled and stood there a moment, unsure of whether to go in or stay there. Either way, they didn’t notice her standing there.
“You guys look worse than me, go home,” Danny teased, his voice slightly hoarse. “And take care of my owl or I will haunt your ass when I die.”
“Danny, I don’t find that very funny,” Jazz scolded.
“Oh, come on. It’s kind of funny,” he argued.
His sister and Tucker finally broke into smiles and shook their heads. “That’s your bad half talking. You don’t have to be so morbid, do you?” Jazz asked.
“It’s good to know that he hasn’t lost his sense of humor,” she said, finally stepping into the room.
Both Jazz and Tucker jumped. “Sam!” Jazz exclaimed, looking excited and surprised to see her at the same time. “How long have you been standing there?”
“Only about a minute,” she replied.
Danny smiled up at her weakly. “Hey…”
“Hey,” she returned softly.
Jazz cleared her throat. “I’m going to go find some coffee. Tucker?” She smacked the back of his head with her hand and he got the hint.
“Okay, okay…but you know what coffee does to me,” he said, raising his eyebrows up and down as they both stood up.
Sam didn’t say anything as they did. She knew what Jazz had done and she gave Danny’s older sister a grateful look as she and Tucker walked past out of the room, which she returned with a warm smile.
She waited a second after they left and then walked over to him, sitting down in the chair that Tucker had occupied. He took her good hand, his eyes full of concern. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine…Just a little banged up,” she replied. “I would ask you the same question, but I think it’s kind of obvious…”
“Yeah,” he said with a grin, shifting uncomfortably. “Eighteen years old and heart problems already…” He coughed harshly and then sighed. “Yeah…it’s any wonder my sister hasn’t shipped me off to a therapist yet after every little experience I’ve had. Not that she doesn’t try…”
“You really scared me,” she choked out, feeling tears run down her cheeks but couldn’t stop them. “I thought--”
“Shh…” he coaxed, stroking her shoulder with her finger. “I’m fine…”
She looked up, sniffling and wiped her eye furiously with her hand. “How can you be so strong?” she asked.
“When you have people to love and take care of, it’s easy,” he told her. He pulled her to him and she trembled in his arms, unable to stop crying. He held onto her gently and leaned his head upon hers. “And I want to be there for you always…”
And she really believed him.
Please R&R! The next chapter starts out…a dream and more…actually more like a bunch of episodes put together. Hee hee…things are starting to get a bit suspicious…
