AN: Fanfic that takes place one year after ceremonial battle, way before GX. Cast’s profiles will be incorporated into the story, but for anyone who is confused as to why someone is where and doing what, that is what this list is for.
This fan-fiction is NOT intended to be a shonen-ai/yaoi fiction. It is intended as more of a shojo/shonen fiction. As a result of seeing one-too-many yaoi-themed yugioh fanart/fiction, my writing has been affected so it is shonen-ai suggestive, but not themed, much like the anime, with its one-too-many shonen-ai scenes (like the Yami Yugi vs. Yugi episode with the orachalchos.)
This fan-fiction is much like the origin of Demon Atemu, one of my fan-art creations, mainly featured on my DeviantArt. (username slifertheskydragon )
Japan’s school system is k-6, 7-9, and 10-12. High school is only 10-Freshmen 11-junior 12-senior. Locations in this fan-fiction are both from the series and real life.
Warnings: Blood, gore, violence, and mild language (and lots and lots of angst. Mmm… angst… drool )
How the fic will organize itself (if the fiction manages to be “popular” for longer than chapter 10, I will try to add more chapters based on what you guys want before I create the conclusion.):
(DA series) Chapters 1-3: Origin/ history of Demon Atemu
(OD series) Chapter 4: The Oracle Dragons
(DG series) Chapter 5: The origin of the Demon Gods
(CA series) Chapters 6-7: Catching up-The new hero gang (blah. Corny.)
(OZ series) Chapters 8-12: the War
(Conclusion) Chapter 13: Endgame
Some quick character run-downs:
The “heroes”:
Yugi Muto: Age 17
Junior in Domino High. The pain left by the departure of his other half’s soul still hurts, but Yugi has pretty much forgotten about his other half, the memory of him still etched deep in his heart. He quit duel monsters after attaining the world championship title by himself, because every time he played the card game, it reminded him of his other half. His fear is having no friends, and being teased constantly.
Atemu: Age: Died at 16
Known as the “other self” of Yugi. Later discovered to be the soul of a nameless Pharaoh. After the ceremonial battle, his name found, and some of his memories recovered, his soul went to rest in the afterlife. After a year in reality, Lord Seth cuts the euphoria of resting in the afterlife short. (Which was like, 10 minutes in the afterlife.) Atemu is forced back to a cursed life, back into reality, with a body created from pure darkness. His only fear is being alone and hurting other people when he can’t control his emotions.
The Oracle Dragons: Age: Immortal
Sent by the Egyptian Gods to protect the world of the living and fight against Lord Seth and his army of shadow creatures. They fear the loss of hope in the world.
The Villains:
Lord Seth: Age: Immortal
The Egyptian God of chaos and destruction. Characterized by his coal-black leathery skin, long face and ears, red eyes and red hair. Also characterized by his aardvark/crocodile-like appearance. Killed by his brother, Horus, and sent to Oblivion for the murder of his other brother, the God of the Underworld, Osiris. Seeks revenge upon the Gods and finds a way by using the soul of the last Pharaoh to enter the afterlife. Only fear is of his plans failing and he himself banished to the deepest regions of Oblivion again.
Demon Atemu: Age: Normal self died at 16
Demon form of Atemu, his body and form created from the darkness wielded by Lord Seth. Atemu transforms into Demon Atemu whenever provoked, or when Lord Seth commands it. A heartless (literally) fiend once provoked, he will go on a rampage of mass murder, and will not stop until all his rage and anger is expelled. He has no fears, the only weakness would be his normal self.
On with the story.

Yu-Gi-Oh! -D Duelists of the Dark
Chapter one- Reawakening (DAI) Fan-fiction by slifertheskydragon

(AN: forgive me for this chapter being short. It gets longer and more eventful in later chapters.)
Atemu looked back as he took one last look at his friends in the world of the living. It pained him to have to leave his friends, who all helped him to get to the place where is wandering soul belonged. He gave the most thanks to Yugi, for without him, he would still be trapped in the millennium puzzle. Tortured by the hollowness and loneliness that surrounded him inside its endless maze of hallways and doors.
As Atemu stepped through the doors, he felt his attire change, to that of his life as the Pharaoh, and as he looked ahead, he saw his priests, his family, and friends in his life as Pharaoh.
As the doors closed behind him, he desperately looked back, wanting to see everyone’s faces just one last time, even for a second, but it was too late. The gateway to the world of the living had been sealed.
“What’s wrong my Pharaoh?” Mahad asked, and knelt to make himself eye level with Atemu. A tear rolled down Atemus’ cheek, and Mahad gently brushed it away. “The Pharaoh shouldn’t be sad, you’re with your family and your friends, in a place of paradise.”
Atemu looked around. The afterlife was truly paradise, he saw Mana happily skipping alongside a crystal-clear river, chasing after blue butterflies. He saw his former Priest; Seto dressed in his Pharaoh robes, walking alongside the river with Kisara, dressed in a beautiful gown, befitting a queen.
“Tell me Mahad, why is it that I sealed my soul in the millennium puzzle? I know it was to stop the shadow games… but… I feel like there was something more… like I wanted to stop myself from doing something that I would regret for the rest of my life… It feels like I did something so terrible that I made myself forget about it.”
Mahad coughed slightly and turned his head away.
“Mahad, please, I need to know the truth…”
Mahad sighed. “Pharaoh, sometimes it is better to forget than remember. What’s important is that you’re where you belong, and have nothing but a bright future ahead of you.”
“But…”
“Pharaoh, all you need to know is that you did what you thought was best for Egypt. You fulfilled the duty of the Pharaoh, and the Egyptian Gods were proud of you that day.”
Atemu looked down. Mahad placed a hand on Atemu’s shoulder.
“Pharaoh, you did something that was for the greater good. You are a good person, one who will fight for justice until the very end. There is no malice in your heart because of that.”
Atemu stood up, and saw his father, standing next to him was Aknaden, and both looked the same as the day that Atemu’s father died. Atemu’s mother stood right next to his father, and smiled gently. His father and mother extended their arms out, welcoming Atemu. “Father! Mother!” Atemu cried, and Atemu ran to them, full of joy and happiness. Atemu felt like he was a child again, the only thing on his mind was to feel the warmth and love of his parents, a love he hadn’t felt in 3,000 years.
As Atemu got closer and closer, he felt the air around him grow cold. He saw Mahad running after him, a hand outstretched, as if he was trying to save him from something. Soon, everything disappeared into darkness; the only light he saw was that of his parents, gently smiling, arms outreached. He realized that light was moving away from him, that warmth and comfort disappearing, and without warning, the ground beneath him shifted, and seemed to liquefy. The darkness came crawling up his legs and froze, holding him in place. Atemu cried out, “Father! Mother! Help me!” but he only saw his parents move farther away, their light fading.
The darkness oozed its way up Atemu’s body, slowly engulfing him. The dark substance felt cold, and it hurt Atemu on the inside. Atemu shut his eyes tight and grasped his arms, shivering. He had felt this before. He remembered he felt the same way when he played the seal of orachalchos, the dark magic of the seal slowly consuming him, controlling him, and it scared the hell out of him.
“No!” Atemu screamed, desperate to be free from the darkness. He didn’t want to feel this pain ever again, the pain of being alone, shrouded in darkness.
When Atemu opened his eyes, he saw his father, standing above him, Atemu whispered with desperation, “Father, please, save me…” and tried to reach out to his father, his arm restricted by the dark ooze holding his arm down.
To his horror, the image of his father shifted. First the eyes turned blood red, then his face elongated and turned a coal black, his hair grew out and turned a dark red, and soon, all that was left was a towering figure with red glowing eyes and a sinister sneer. The creature spoke with an ominous voice that struck fear into Atemu’s soul.
“Heba.W-Kekui Diaha”
With those words, the dark ooze finally engulfed Atemu, cutting him off from everything, leaving him surrounded in darkness.
Alone.
