Not Capable of Loving You

The large castle on the hill was greeted with the sun. Orange and pink tinted the sky as an outline of the school was formed.

A young girl looked out onto the sunrise from her perfect view in the Astronomy Tower. Her lean frame sat in the window sill, staring blankly out the window. The young, once happy girl of age eleven had changed. Drastically. The eleven year old her had curly brown hair, bright brown eyes, a beautiful smile, a happy attitude, and a creamy colored complexion.

The now adult, at seventeen years of age, named Hermione Annitha Granger was different. Her brown curly hair was replaced with long straight jet black locks, which ended in ringlets down her back. Her bright brown eyes were actually grey, a spell put on them in her early years. She still had a beautiful smile, a beautiful smile no one would ever see again. Her happy attitude had diminished and her creamy complexion was now pale.

The goth looking girl left the Tower to breakfast. She knew it was early, but then she wouldn't have to sit with the Gryffindors. The eleven year old Hermione would enjoy sitting with her house, eating and chatting merrily. But, she was not the same Hermione anymore. She came to breakfast early, and ate in solitude. She couldn't stand the Gryffindors, she had rejected them as her house a while back.

Sitting at the Gryffindor Table, which was empty, she drank a cup of coffee. She didn't eat anything but an apple. She felt so alone, now. She just wished someone would talk to her, even in her presence of aloofness. She could feel a pair of eyes follwing her every move as she walked over to the corner of the room.

Draco Malfoy was surprised at the actions of the normally happy Gryffindor. He had noticed when she came in to eat early. He took her new appearance and her sudden distaste of her friends in quickly. He saw her often, since her being in most of his classes. He had also taken advanced classes, as his grades were high enough. She never looked happy, and she failed to answer questions in class voluntarily. It's not that she failed her tests, she got perfect scores. But she wasn't the same fired up Gryffindor he had grown to hate every year. She would never argue with him in their shared Head dormitory, she would dimiss his presence and continue on sulking.

She wrapped her cloak around her as she walked out onto the dew covered field. Her feet crunched noisily underneath the leaves as she made her way into the Forbidden Forest. Moving aside the branches, she came to a lake in the Forest. It soothed her. And only her. The lake itself looked unwelcoming, and was normally clouded over with fog. The iciness of the air around her made Hermione shiver. The lake was tranquil, in a weird freakish kind of way, but nevertheless, she enjoyed sitting there.

Realizing she had been out there for an hour, she walked out of the Forest and into the Great Hall. She walked through the crowds of people, a hand shooting out and catching hers. Ronald Weasley, her current boyfriend, pulled her out into the hallway. Her nose and cheeks were pink, and so were the tips of her ears. She didn't notice all the people silently file out after breakfast was over; they all knew how angry Ron was with Hermione.

"Hermione. I haven't seen you for a month and a half. Where have you been?" He asked her. "You've missed about two of our Quidditch matches." It frustrated Hermione to hear him worry about where she had been because of her absence from their games.

"I've just cut myself away, Ron. And you only just noticed because I missed your matches? Or did Harry tell you?" She said, turning away from him.

"You know what? All you've done when we've been together was what you wanted." He said, jerking her around to face him.

"No!" She screamed. "You never did what I want! Not once, did we ever spend time with each other, and not once did you ever tell me you loved me!" She said, her kness buckling.

"Hermione, how can you say that? I've done nothing but respect what you want, you've done nothing of mine." He said angrily.

"No, Ron! That's a lie. You have done nothing I wanted. I've gone with you countless time to Quidditch shops in Hogsmeade instead of 'the quaint little shop on the corner.' I've gone to all the games you wanted me at instead of staying in my room and studying. I stay with you most of the time instead of talking to my friends. The only recognition I get is a hug goodbye!" She said, tears welling up in her eyes.

"You're lying!" He exclaimed.

"No Ron, I'm not. How long is it going to take for you to realize that I don't love you anymore? You've been nothing but a selfless, lying, unkind, arrogant bastard."

He suddenly drew forward and slapped her, making her drop to her knees. He stalked off while the crowd around them stared at her. Her head was down and tears were running down her face. Ginny pushed her way through.

"Hermione." She said softly. She lifted her friend up and helped her get back to her room.

"Hermione, I know Ron didn't mean it." She tried.

"Ginny, didn't you hear us talk? I broke up with him. I told you, I don't love him anymore. He knows now."

"I'm sorry, though. He never told you he loved you?"

"Not after he asked me out. I mean, sure, in the beginning we couldn't get enough of each other, but now. He hardly knows me anymore." And with that, Ginny left.

"Darkness and Bunnies." She said, the portrait opening.

She walked into her room and wrote a letter to everyone.

Harry,

You've been a terribly nice friend, and for that, I thank you. You've been kind to me and helped me out when I needed it. You've supported me through the start and finish of Ron and I's relationship. I just want you to know, the you don't have to shed any tears for me. I'm perfectly fine with the way I am.

Love Much,

Hermione

Ginny,

You have been the best girlfriend I could ever asked for. Thanks for helping me out today, I really needed it. I love you, Ginny. I hope you don't get too upset with me.

Love Much,

Hermione

Ron,

I shouldn't even be sending you this. If things hadn't gone the way they had, I'd be writing how much I love you and that I would never leave you, but this isn't a fairy tale. I felt you had no right to hit me today, and the only words of comfort I can offer you in this situation is it's not your fault. or, maybe it is. So, in that case, you have no words of comfort comin from me.

Hermione

She sent them all off with her owl, Breeze. She quickly walked to the window of her room, which was on the fourth story. She looked out onto the balcony, and gingerly climbed out. She stood ravely over the side of the railiing, looking down and knowing no one was down there. She was going to jump.

Draco entered the common room and flopped onto the couch. He felt rather annoyed with Weasley's act of kindness for the day to Granger, but she had indeed called him a selfless, lying, unkind, arrogant bastard. He decided to go and bother her. Just for today. He opened her door, and saw her stadning on the balcony, readying to rid the world of herself. And for a second, he thought it was perfect. She would never talk to him or bother him, but he thought about his life. It was probably worse than hers and she was killing herself. She leaned over the edge. He never figured out what possesed him to yell.

"Granger! Stop!" She turned to look at him and lost her balance. He sprinted over to the side of the room and grabbed her around the waist. He pulled her away from the window and she stared at him. His arms were safely locked around her waist until the door crashed open. Harry, Ron, and Ginny stood in the doorway.

"Malfoy!" Harry exclaimed. "What are you doing in here?"

"Potter, it's not that I want to be in here, but Granger here was hanging off the balcony. Gonna jump off the side there." Harry stared at his friend for a while.

"Hermione." He said softly, allowing Draco to walk past him. He engulfed his friend in a hug. She began crying.

"I can't do it anymore, Harry! I can't live like this! I can't live at all!" She sobbed into his shoulder.

"I showed Dumbledore the letters, Hermione. He says you can take off for school for a while." Ginny said. "Come on, Harry. Let's help pack her things."
