"Photograph"

SPOILER ALERT!
This takes place after chapter 59. Actually a lot later than that, when Misa loses her memory of the death note again. I also warn you it's a bit mushy. Nori is Misa's friend from chapter 48. I should probably write fanfics of a series other than death note, huh. O . o)

Nori blinked.

"Misa, what's this?" she asked, pointing to a frame on Light's desk in the living room. Misa hurried over to inspect the frame.
"Oh, that," Misa said, surprised, and stared at the photo inside the frame. "Misa doesn't know, really. But Light says he likes it." The two women stared blankly at the frame.
"Do you know where that place is?" Nori questioned further.
"Oh yes, it's of Light's old room!" Misa nodded. The photo was indeed of his room before he had moved into his own apartment with Misa.
Nori peered at the photo closer. "But why is it blurry in some parts? And why would he keep a blurry photo of his old room on his desk?" Nori huffed, confused. Misa's boyfriend was weird.

Suddenly the kettle shrieks from the kitchen, and the photograph is soon forgotten.

Late at night, Light will return from the headquarters.

Misa will probably be asleep on the couch, the tv droning on about the latest Kira killings. And then Light will carry her to the bedroom, tucking her into bed the same way his mother used to tuck Sayu in.

Light will yawn and make himself tea, a drink, maybe late dinner, depending on his mood, and sit down at his desk.
His desk is neat and organized; most paper is filed away and loose sheets are stacked in order of importance. Three picture frames sit on the desk, one of Misa and one of his family. The last one sits apart from the others, serving as a paper weight for the loose sheets.

He will pick this one up and smile before sorting the papers once more. Not a cold, killer's smile, but a fond one. While everyone else would see a blurry, distorted image of his old room, Light sees two bewildered-looking shinigami. He had taken them by surprise with the flash, neither Ryuk nor Rem quite knowing what a camera was. It was almost cute. Light will soon forget his reminiscing as his nightly goes on. Ryuk will saunter in an hour later than him, to avoid suspicion of Light being Kira, and pester him for an apple.

Light will groggily throw him an apple as he finishes his own dinner. Then Light will stretch and make his way to bed, as Ryuk stays in the living room.

But Light does not know all of this nightly routine.
Ryuk will wait a while for Light's gentle snoring, then slowly munch his apple.
Ryuk will sit, gazing sadly at the photograph of him and Rem, until the morning comes.
Because Light doesn't know…Gods of death grieve too.
