CHAPTER 1:

Woody was walking to his desk after just getting into the station when he heard a familiar female voice.

“I told your brother to stop beating you with the ugly stick. But damn, he must be hitting you like twice a day or something.” She said, smiling as she approaches him.

He turns around and sees her. Smiles, “Katlyn! Who’s the idiot that let you of your cage?” and gives her a hug.

He notices that she hugs him pretty tight; tighter than usual. Like she didn't want him to ever let her go. He wonders what she's so scared of, leading her to hug him so hard.

“So what you up to Woods?” she asks, finally letting him go.

“Well I just needed to get something off my desk, then I was meeting my partner for a case.” He replies, pointing towards his desk.

But before he can ask her anything else she tells him. “I’ll wait for you outside ok? I'm thirsty and there's a vender outside I saw.” She leaves.

Five minutes later, Woody exits the police station. His eyes search for Katlyn. She comes up on the left side of him and gives him another hug. Some water is tossed up and all over the sidewalk. She lets go of him and takes a sip of her water.

He watches her screw the cap back on. “What was that for? Are you ok?” He asks, bending over a little and putting his hand on her shoulder. Looking in her eyes searching for a clue as to what’s wrong.

“I am so totally fine. The hug was the fact I am so stoked to see you and happy to be here. (She puts one hand on her hip) So where is this partner of yours? I’m starving, so hurry this up” Smiling at him and tilting her head to the left a little.

He points to the restaurant across the street. There, sitting outside at a round table, was a middle aged man. It was a nice day out, it was one of those days that you don’t really need a sweatshirt or a jacket. But if you were to wear one you wouldn't get hot. The man was almost six feet, dirty blonde hair, brown eyes. He was slightly tan, nothing too big, and he looked like he gets to the gym occasionally. He introduced himself as detective Banks, but everyone calls him Jack. Woody and Banks finished an hour later. Everyone said their good byes and Banks leaves the table.

“So Woody, why did you meet detective Banks at the restaurant and not in the police station?” She questions.

Getting up from the table after paying their half of the bill. “We were having trouble doing some paper work at the station without being bothered. We kept getting interrupted, plus this was the only time we could do the paper work and we were hungry.”

Katlyn stopped Woody outside the station. “May I stay with you till I can get a place of my own?” She asks nervously.

He looks at her, concerned “Ya, just please tell me what's going on. You're starting to really worry me.” He puts both hands on her shoulders.

She backs away from him. Looking around to make sure what seems like she was safe to speak or not. “Well my stuff is by your desk. I…I have to pick something up (starting to act weird) I….I'll be back in a like an hour or two.” She rushes off before Woody can say another thing.

Woody is at the morgue talking with Dr. Macy and Nigel, checking up on a body for a case. He was talking to them when his cell started ringing. It was Katlyn asking where he was because she was at the station. He gave her directions on how to get to the morgue. Twenty minutes later, she shows up. Lily and Katlyn enter. Woody, Dr. Macy, and Nigel all look up towards them when they entered and all their mouths dropped. Before Katlyn was wearing some faded blue jeans and some gray shirt with some writing on it. Her hair was brown and her eyes were a very lovely shade of emerald green.

Now she’s in black sketchers with white stitching, white tights, short black leather mini skirt, black short sleeved shirt that was a little baggy to show that their was a white shirt under it. On the shirt was the Rolling Stones lips. She was wearing hot pink bracelets. But what really was the reason the guys could not take their eyes off of was her hair. Her hair was a dark purple. Her eye shadow was a light purple and sparkly. She looked liked she stepped out of the 80’s or the early 90’s.

Woody walked up to her. You can tell he was struggling to find words. Finally he found them, “ what the hell happened? You hair it’s…..it’s so purple.”

She starts to giggle and answers him with: "Don’t worry it’s a wig. I needed to get a new one anyway. My last purple one got destroyed. I got some more, I need to get some new ones also. I changed before I came over that’s why it took so long.” she smiles, folds her arms and leans against the counter. Looking towards Macy and Nigel after she finished.

Noticing who she was looking at “Oh yeah, this is Dr. Garret Macy and Nigel Townsend.” Pointing to them as he says their name. “This is my friend I was telling you two about. Katlyn Maxwell.” They were all still looking at her hair.

She moves and shakes their hands, also saying hello. When she gets to Nigel, she smiles, bites her bottom lip and checks him out. Looking him up and down.

Katlyn quickly turns to Woody. “Hey I’ll let everyone get back to whatever's going on. Can I have the key to your place and directions to it? Don’t worry, you don’t need to take me. I’ll wait for you at your place and we can talk about why I'm here when you get off work. Because I know that you've been wondering why I'm here.” She spills it out really fast before he can say a word. She holds out her hand. So Woody gives her the keys and directions.

Later that night, Woody gets back to his place. Katlyn is sprawled out on his couch, watching the television. This time, she's taken off her wig and laid it on the table. He felt a little better, since she was not wearing the wig. He was having a little trouble getting over the purple hair. Woody puts the thought in the back of his mind and sits next to Katlyn as she sits up.

He turns to Katlyn and puts his hand on her arm. “Katlyn, what's troubling you? Why are you here and acting strangely? Well, the clothes are you but you come in and say hi. Then tell me you'll be back later and show up later completely different.”

She gets up and starts to pace. After a minute or two, she stops. “Well, after talking to you when you moved here, you sounded like you were having fun. And you liked it here. (She pauses for a second and sticks her hands in her pockets. She looks to the floor and kind of twists one of her feet around.) “So I decided I needed a change. I packed my things and left. Few days later I was here.” She finally lifts her head and looks at Woody.

He scratches his head then stands up. He puts his hands on his hips. Looking at Katlyn “I've known you a long time and I know that’s not the story at all. (walking towards her.) What is it? You know you can tell me anything.”

“I said why I came, why don’t you believe me?” She sounds hurt and takes a step away from him.

Woody looks at her, feeling very concerned and confused. “You, of all people, should know I am able to read you like a book. I can tell that there's something wrong with you. So spill it girl. Or maybe…(smiling, bringing his hands to her sides) I have to find a way to get it out of you.” He moves in to tickle her.

She backs up quickly and slams against the wall. She Slowly sinks to the floor. Katlyn brings her knees to her chest and wraps her arms firmly around them. Tears start to stream down her face. Woody stands there, stunned and wondering what just happened. He slowly approaches her, getting down on his knees and sitting in front of her.

He's scared and doesn't know what to think. He starts to call her by the nickname he used when they were in Wisconsin. He's scared to touch her because he doesn't know what she might do. “Attie, what happened to you? What just happened here? What's really (He stresses really) going on with you? Attie please le me help you. Please.”

Katlyn starts to tremble a little and cries. Woody scoots to the side of her and puts his arm around her. He brings her close and hugs her. She begins to cry on him. After about ten minutes she finally explains.

Sitting up straight, she starts. “You remember the guy I told you about? Well we had began to date, it had been maybe like a year since we had started dating. He told... (She pauses, having more tears go down her face. She sniffles and tries to regroup) He told me that he loved me.” pausing for a moment or two again.

Rubbing her arms, Woody asks “What did you tell him in return?” Giving her a little hug.

“I said (sniffling) thank you. And he asked if I felt the same way. I……I……I told him (sniffles) that I liked him a lot. But saying that I love you is a very big step for me, and I'm not ready for that yet. Next thing (Katlyn get’s really shaky and white. She started to cry again and really, really hard this time.)

“It’s ok Attie. If you want to, we can stop this. There's no need to carry on.” He tells her very softly.

Nothing is said for awhile. The only thing that's heard in the apartment is the television and Katlyn sobbing. Finally she carries on with her story. She wipes the tears from her eyes with her left hand. “He did something I've never known him to do. He started to hit……hit me.” Turning her entire body toward Woody. He saw it in her face, and knew right then and there, how frightened she was. She gets up, paces, and shakes hard.

Woody gets up from the floor and walks after her. He holds her hand. “I’m sorry. Did you tell anyone? Please tell me I'm not the only one that knows this.” He sounds concerned.

“There is more” She steps back from Woody and looks into his eyes. “He beat me so bad that I ended up in the hospital, in a coma, for a month. And the four months of recuperation. I had to relearn how to walk.” Making it sound like she had a hard time saying that because remember that is the lowest she had ever been.

“Shit Attie why didn't you tell me sooner? Are you ok? Do you need me to do anything?” Then he paused and looked at Katlyn, remembering something “What happened to that guy?” Tilting his head to the right.

“He was arrested and was killed the night he went to jail. He pissed off his cell mate.” She doesn't look or sound too happy about the outcome.

Woody and Katlyn had spent the whole night talking about the trauma. Katlyn had no one to talk to about it because there was no one around Wisconsin who cared. Her parents were never too fond of her, and she never really had any friends. At least till Woody came along. He was the best friend she desperately needed, the older brother she never had. It was about 10:30/11:00 in the morning when there was a knock on the door. Woody was in the kitchen, making breakfast. He went and opened the door. Standing there was Jordan, holding coffee, a bag of doughnuts, and wearing a big smile.

Looking startled “Jordan! What……what are you doing here?”

She walks in “Well I figured we can go to work together. We don't get to see each other much. I thought it'd be fun.” She takes a few steps inside and turns towards Woody.

He starts to say something “Well I’m….” But then Katlyn comes out of the bathroom wearing one of Woody’s shirts and a pair of those cotton yellow shorts. The one’s cheerleaders have with the words CHEER on the butt. These ones’ have the word WEREWOLF with some scratches on the right butt cheek. She came out scratching her head and looking at the floor. “Hey Woody thanks for last….” Suddenly stopping and taking notice to Jordan “Nnight” finishing her sentence.

“Well this is awkward. Um…here Woody” Jordan goes to him and hands him the food and coffee. “Guess you need this more and you already have company, so...” She waves good-bye and leaves.
