Investments
Zack stared down at the piece of paper in his hands. "This can't be right..."
"Is there a problem?" Sephiroth said from where he stood on the other side of the desk.
Zack looked up at him. "I think you screwed up on this." Zack held it out to him, pointing to the "Amount" section which read "9500 gil".
Sephiroth looked down at it for a second then back at him. "That amount is correct," he said.
Zack gaped at him. "You gotta be kiddin' me! 9500 a week?"
"That's right."
"Shit," Zack said, "What am I supposed to do with all that money? What the hell do you do with it?"
"I have certain...investments," Sephiroth said, simply, and returned to his desk.
Zack got up and headed for the door. "Investments..." he muttered.
Zack opened the door to Cloud's room, not even bothering to knock, and stuck his head in. Cloud, who was sitting at his desk, looked up from his work.
"Yo," Zack said, "I brought ya something."
He entered the room, brandishing a shiny new Mythril Saber with a grin.
Cloud stared at him, mouth slightly open. "Senpai...Y-you didn't have to..."
"Ya want it or not?" Zack said.
Cloud jumped up. "U-un."
He spun it around in his hand and held the hilt out to Cloud. "For the millionth time, it's just 'Zack'," he said, "So quit it with that 'senpai' crap."
Cloud nodded and took the sword from him. He held it out with both hands and stared at it like it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen.
Zack chuckled. "I take it you like it, then."
Cloud looked up at him, a huge smile on his face. "Thanks, sen...Zack."
Zack grinned. "Don't mention it," he said, "Listen, I'd love to hang around, but I gotta make another stop tonight."
"Okay," Cloud said.
"I'll see ya tomorrow," Zack said.
He started toward the door and turned back just as he was about leave. "'Night, kiddo."
He closed the door behind him and headed for his next stop.
Zack knocked on Sephiroth's door, a small box in his hand. On his way back from the weapon shop, he'd stopped by one of the fancy restaurants and picked up a chocolate mousse torte with bourbon cherries. Sephiroth had mentioned once when they'd passed the place that it was his favorite dessert.
The door slid open and Zack held out the box. Sephiroth looked at it, a slight crease between his eyebrows.
"Just take it," Zack said.
Sephiroth look the box from him and looked inside. "What's this for?" he said, looking mildly surprised.
"No reason," Zack said, "Was walkin' by the place and remembered you said you liked that."
Sephiroth closed the box and looked at him. "Zack, this costs..."
"Shut up and accept it," Zack said, "You said you had investments. Well, so do I."
He thought of Cloud's smile and Sephiroth's child-like surprise at the gifts. He'd made his friends happy and to him that was the best investment he could ever make.
