Chapter 2 : Wherever I stand
A/N : Takes place after The Long Con
“Hi Freckles, do you need company of a good looking man such as myself?” Sawyer asked as he walked towards Kate, his naked, wet chest shining in the light of the falling sun. Kate sighted and looked at her hands, then back up and frowned her eyebrows as the sun shined in her eyes.
“Leave me alone Sawyer.” Kate said as calm as possible and looked back at her hands.
“Oh no freckles, don’t try to push me away like you did with Indiana Jones over there.” Sawyer said and rested his gaze upon Jack who was sitting next to Ana on the beach.
“I didn’t push him away!” Kate said and raised her voice. Why Sawyer does always have to be such an ass? Why couldn’t he just be human? Why couldn’t he be more like Jack? Probably because of the same reason she didn’t love Sawyer, because he wasn’t Jack. He would never be Jack. Well she didn’t know if she loved Jack and even if she did she was too afraid to admit it. She even couldn’t admit it to herself.
“Ah so the General Jack dumped you for Sergeant Ana Lulu over there?” Sawyer asked with a grin on his face. Kate pushed her up and faced Sawyer again before she left.
“Just leave me alone!” Kate almost shouted and walked away. She could feel the eyes of the other survivors resting on her, but only the eyes of one person mattered to her, the eyes of Jack.
“Just remember, you don’t hate me sweet cheeks!” Sawyer laughed as he shouted after Kate. But soon his smile faded away. Why couldn’t he just tell her what he felt? Why did he always make her run? Why didn’t she give him the look she had given Jack so many times? Why couldn’t he make her giggle like Jack did, make her feel all girly?
It had been a quite night; it had been a lonely night. Jack knew Sawyer and Kate weren’t on speaking terms since the last 24 hours. Part of him was happy for that, but he didn’t want Kate to feel alone, he didn’t want to see her sad. Although he had the feeling that whenever Kate saw him, whenever she heard his name her face fell. Sawyer had been spending the night with Ana. Jack didn’t mind, the only thing that bothered him was that Sawyer had took the liquor from the hatch. But what could he do, Sawyer had the guns, Sawyer was in charge. But he wouldn’t give up; Jack would fight back but not now. Things had gotten a little to stressful for him. He knew normally he would have fought back already but now the only thing that crossed his mind the whole day was Kate. As hard as he tried to push her away even in his mind. Nothing helped, he kept thinking about her.
“You’re a good drinker.” Sawyer said as he saw Ana taking a long sip from her drink. Ana laughed.
“Compared to whom? You?” Ana asked mischievous and laughed before she took another sip.
“No, no compared to me you are nothing. To bad freckles isn’t here she is a good drinker too. I would be very comfortable having you both by my side with some liquor in your hands.” Sawyer said and licked his lips.
“Don’t even think, no, don’t even dream about it.” Ana said in a warring tone and Sawyer laughed.
“Well, I asked the same question to freckles after a few days so now I’m going to ask you.”
“If you want to make out with me don’t embarrass yourself and shut up now.” Ana said and Sawyer laughed.
“If I would have wanted to make out with you, we already would have done that.” Sawyer laughed and moved a little closer to Ana who smiled at her drink.
“That is so not true. You want to make out with Kate too but she still hasn’t.” Ana said and took another long sip of her drink as she was looking at Sawyer.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you lulu but I already made out with her.” Sawyer said and saw the surprised look on Ana’s face as she raised an eyebrow. “I mean it.” Sawyer said as if reading Ana’s thoughts.
“That girl is really making her way through the group.” Ana said and shook her head still a little shocked.
“Haha no, no I need to disappoint you again or no I think you will be happy about this one. Jack and Kate haven’t kissed yet.” Sawyer said and smiled at Ana, his lips pressed together. The warm liquor still resting on them.
“Well now am I the one to disappoint you…they did.” Ana said and slowly moved the bottle away from her lips. “He told me.” Ana said as she saw Sawyers smile fell. She saw him tense up.
“Well, how...” Sawyer begun for the first time in a long time he didn’t know what to say. Sawyer cleared his throat and looked away. “Jack, said that?” Sawyer asked, using no nicknames.
“Well I asked him and you could see by the look in his eyes something happened between the two of them.” Ana said and smiled at the disbelieving Sawyer.
“Well no wonder they aren’t talking to each other lately, she didn’t liked the kiss. And you know what? Freckles is still talking to me.” Sawyer said and raised his eyebrows, satisfied with his conclusion.
“Still first kissing you, than Jack. She is on fire!” Ana said and Sawyer laughed.
“If you’re jealous just say so and kiss me.” Sawyer said and they both laughed. Sawyer looked away and shook his head. But Ana didn’t, she kept starring at the smiling Sawyer, even a small smile pressed on her own lips.
Kate wasn’t in her tent, he didn’t gone to her tent but he knew it was her turn to sit in the hatch, pushing a button. And they even didn’t know what for. He walked towards his tent and saw Sun and Jin talking together. Jin was studying the wound on Suns head softly with his finger. Jack smiled softly and gave them a nod. He really missed Kate. He even didn’t know for what they were ignoring each other. Even after that thing that happened in the jungle they still were ignoring each other. Was it because they kissed, because she ran, because she followed or was it because of jealousy?
Jack walked on the beach towards his tent. Slowly kicking the sand away by each step he took. The sand was cold and wet, the water touched Jacks bare feet as the waves rolled out on the sand. Jack shoe fell out of his hand and he stopped and picked it up. He smiled to the ground. ‘I’m sinking.’ He thought, he raised his head and looked at the moon and the dark sky drawled up with stars. He was standing with his pants rolled up until his knees, his shoes in his one hand and his back towards the beach, sinking.
Kate leaned against a tree as she watched the person standing in the water. She knew who it was by is posture. The wind softly blew under his shirt, the water slapping against his knees, his feet sinking. She smiled as she saw him splash some water in his face and looked back up, drops of water still rolling down on his cheek. He rubbed his small beard and putted his hands back on his hips. Kate was still watching him, holding back her breath as she leaned against the tree. She saw Jack turn around and she was immediately pulled out of her thoughts. She remembered the moment he grabbed her hand when they were hiding from the monster, she remembered how they stood there for 5 seconds, breathing, counting in their heads. She remembered that after only 3 seconds she already feel safe, cause after 3 seconds he grabbed her hand. There was something about Jack that made her feel safe, but scared on the same time. It wasn’t Jack she was scared of; she was scared of her feelings for him. Scared of loosing him, but maybe it was already too late for that.
Jack walked towards his tent and saw Kate sitting next to a still burning fire. Playing with her toy plane, well she was looking at it. Jack could see the sad look in her eyes, the hurt. He always saw that look when she was looking at that plane. 'Well It looks like Kate’s time in the hatch is over'. Jack opened his tent but stopped before he entered and gazed back at Kate.
“Hi.” Jack said as he stood in front of her. He saw her nod, but she kept starring at the fire. Jack sat down on the other side of the fire and smiled softly.
“You don’t have to ignore me you know.” Jack said finally, and looked at her in the corner of his eyes as he was playing with his hands.
“Well it isn’t like you’ve never ignored me.” She said and Jack could hear the hurt in her voice.
“Oh euhm I thought we could just sit together or maybe even talk…” Jack said and stood up. “Not for today huh?” Jack said hurtled and turned around, ready to walk away but Kate stopped him.
“Jack wait!” she shouted and Jack walked closer towards Kate, bending his head. “I like… I like the just sitting part.” She said softly and gave him a half, hopeful smile. Jack sat down again, now next to Kate and smiled softly at her. They both didn’t say anything but just kept silent.
