The Show Must Go On

Disclaimer: As if I own High School Musical. If I did, would I be on fanfiction?

Note: This story has kinda a lot of plots, so, please don't judge the fic yet. :) Pairings are the usuals, must I list them? Also, don't really mind the rating, it's incase I add words I don't notice till after. Lol.

.Troy.

Should I ask her? Aagh, what would I say? What if she says no?

"Dude. Chill. I mean, the worst she can do is say no, right? And it won't kill you if she does," Chad Danforth said as he patted my back after he took a shot, the swoosh of the basket a fine enough indication that the practice was paying off.

Pacing, I still felt like I was swallowing a boulder and like my stomach was doing back flips while my sneakers squealed against the East High gym floor. It had been a week since Gabriella Montez and I had landed the lead roles of Arnold and Minnie in East High's 'Twinkle Town' musicale. And my team had been able to convince me that it was about time for me to ask Gabriella out on a date.

"Dude, you're Troy Bolton, star and MVP of the 2006 championship game! I mean, come on! You're a star athlete, lead role of the play. I mean, what can't you do?" Another of my teammates, Jason Cross, said jokingly as he threw the ball from the three-point line. Swoosh.

"Ask out a girl," I heard Chad mutter with a grin. I punched him in the arm and he rolled his eyes, taking a basketball from my hands and shooting it from half court. "You have to stop worrying so much. You were doing some serious traveling." Swish. After I punched him, he turned to me with a smug grin. "At least I gathered the courage to ask out Taylor."

Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Yeah, whatever."

"He's right you know," Jason mutter as the three of us decided to throw in the towel and head home. Well, they'd head home. I have practice of a different kind.

As we headed towards the locker room, I shifted a bit to the defensive mood. "Hey, I don't see you asking Kelsi out any time soon," I said, finally, as it took me this long to think of a comeback. Jason's face turned red and Chad backed me up with a laugh. It wasn't exactly common knowledge to all, but it was well known among the team that it was more than a crush.

After that, the three of us took showers and headed our separate ways, but not before the two of them got one last word in. "Hey, if you're gonna ask her, it might as well be sooner than later. I mean, you don't want to put in the wrong vibe."

This caught my attention as we all headed down the main hallway towards both the South St. exit and the auditorium. Stopping, I held out both of my hands and stopped them as well. "You really think that?" I asked suddenly, a bit worried.

"Well, you really like her, and no doubt she likes you... but it's usually the guy that asks the girl out on the first date," Jason said thoughtfully.

"Yeah, girls never ask the guy out on the first date. Well, most anyway. Some freaky chick thing," Chad added. There was a small silence as I still debated to asking her out or not. We all began walking again, each silent with their own thoughts; mine on asking Gabriella, Jason's on asking Kelsi, and Chad on who knows what. Right before the two of them headed towards the exit and I headed for the auditorium, Chad stopped us. "I just had a perfect idea. Like, beyond perfect. Insanely geniusly perfect. And it's a way to get you both set up." Jason and I looked at him with anticipation and hope, as well as a hint of suspicion. "Well, you know how we were all planning the 'Congratulations' party for Troy and Gabriella?" I shook my head, unaware of it till now, but followed along anywa. "Well, what if we made it like a group date? Yeah, like me and Taylor, Troy and Gabriella, Jason and Kelsi...! Like a big party type thing or something--"

"Ooh, a party? Now, who could have a party without me?" A higher pitched voice said jubilantly from behind us. Closing my eyes and turning around slowly, there was no question to who it was. "I love parties!" Sharpay Evans cried triumphantly, clapping her hands together in joy. Behind her, her brother, Ryan, rolled his eyes. "So, um, when is it?" Sharpay asked, oblivious to the annoyed sighs that escaped us.

Jason, Chad, and I exchanged glances but knew that once Sharpay set her mind to something, it's best to just let her at it then to make her beat around the bush and get more aggravated as she went.

"Uh, um, this... Saturday," I muttered, thinking fast. "Yeah, well, we all, uh, wanted to celebrate the auditions and are meeting up at the food court in the mall and then we're... uh... going to the carnival after." I made up the entire plan while talking to Sharpay, who seemed genuinely fooled.

"Ah! Wonderful! Ryan and I accept and can't wait to see you tomorrow!" At that, she walked away, well, more like strutted away with Ryan, the loyal brother, tailing right behind.

Jason scoffed. "Hard to beilieve he's the older one," he muttered, but there were bigger things at hand.

"This Saturday? As in... tomorrow? Troy, are you crazy? We don't even if anyone can go! What if all the girls are busy and you are stuck there alone, with only Sharpay and Ryan? The guy himself isn't bad, but with his sister he's just her shadow copy."

I partially winced at the thought, but tried putting on a smile and shrugged it off. "Whatever, I have rehearsal." As I opened the auditoruim's heavy doors, (the rear entrance), I heard Gabriella's voice, accompanied by Kelsi's piano playing, flood the hallway. I saw Jason's eyes light up. As I took a step inside, I saw that, as usual, Taylor was in the crowd watching her two new best friends rehearse. Even if they were just practicing the notes.

As I threw my backpack to the corner of the stage, I saw Sharpay and Ryan doing their little breathing exercises as we all awaited the arrival of Mrs. Darbus. As Chad and Jason peeked their head into the auditorium, I waved for them to come in. They always came in anyway, Jason to watch Kelsi, and Chad to talk to Taylor. I don't even know why we pretend they're going home after practice anymore.

"Hey, Troy!" I heard someone call to me and I smiled.

"Hey, Gabriella! Kelsi!" As I sprinted across the stage to them, Kelsi nodded and Gabriella gave me one of her usual smiles. "So, do we have the songs for the musical yet?" I asked enthuastically, my eyes wandering to the sheet music Kelsi had on the piano. But they were just basic warm ups.

"Sorry, Troy, but Mrs. Darbus still hasn't assigned the music yet. But she said she'll give them out on Monday," Kelsi said quietly as Gabriella threw her arms around me in an embrace. I gave her a small hug back and felt heat rush to my cheeks.

Just then, the clapping of Mrs. Darbus's hands (and rings) snapped everyone back to life. "Come now, peo-ple!" she shouted, (lengthening the word 'people') while she called the entire cast on stage. "The theater waits for no one, so, if you aren't on stage, you might as well leave!" Quite ironic since she is late. Gabriella, Kelsi, Ryan, Sharpay, and I rushed over as the meeting began. "Right, now, today we weill be learning the basic backbone story of 'Twinkle Town'..."

"Again?" Everyone muttered and moande. I sighed as I awaited the end of what would be the longest two hour meeting ever.

-Two Hours Later-

"Right, well, that was a decent effort put in today, but you must accept that this is only a step in the thousand mile journey of drama! Rest up and we'll meet up again for rehearsal on Monday!"

As Mrs. Darbus turned off her desk light and her workstation, Kelsi, Gabriella, and I practically fell to the ground. "That... was the worst... of the worst..." Kelsi moaned as she lay on the wooden stage floor. "I have never seen Mrs. Darbus work a class that hard without having any script or music for them! Ever!"

Gabriella, who had been lying down too, meekly nodded her head. The three of us just lay there, in silence, our heads touching as our feet stretched outward, forming some kind of weird triangular circle thing. Yeah, I was never one for geometry... that was Gabi's job.

"She is really stressing this show... I don't know if I can do it!" Gabriella finally admitted. I laughed.

"You'll be fine," I assured her as I grabbed her hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. She smiled, but the click clacking of high heels made the three of us bolt up into sitting positions.

"Hi Troy, Gabriella. Kelsi," Sharpay said in her 'I'm-faking-sweet' voice. Naw, I promised Gabriella I'd try to be nicer to her. After all, she has gotten a little better since pre-auditions. "So what time are we meeting at the mall?" She asked, addressing us all, but directing her inquiry to me.

Kelsi and Gabriella looked at me with a questioning and puzzled look."Mall?" Gabriella aske me, a bit suspicious. As if on cue, Taylor, Jason, and Chad came up to the middle of stage, immediatly joining our conversation.

Shaking my head, it took a moment to gather my thoughts. "Oh, right!" I said, smiling. The mall! "Uh, well, Chad, Jason, and I--" Suddenly, the squealing of sneakers and the yelling of Sharpay's name made us all aware of who was on their way.

"Don't forget me!" Zeke called as he ran onto the stage and slipped, falling literally, in front of Sharpay. All eyes fell on him as he took a small Ziplock bag of cookies out from the pocket of his jacket and handed it to Sharpay. Every day there was rehearsal, he ran home so he could make a batch of cookies for Sharpay so they were warm and ready for her afterwards because 'She never deserves less'. Or so he says. As he regained his breath, he spoke. "So, uh, what are we talking about again?"

I rolled my eyes. "Well, anyway, we were planning on having like a celebration night kind of thing..." I said, rewording it to avoid asking out Gabriella in front of a crowd. Chad and Jason cast warning glances to me and I knew they would nag on me for not calling it a date. "And we wanted to invite everyone!"

My words came out kind of fast, sadly what I did when I was kind of nervous, so I saw some of my friends raise an eyebrow. But Gabriella was fast forgiving and gave me one of her warm-hearted smiles. "That sounds like a good idea! The nine of us never spend good time together outside of school." At this we all murmured in agreement and Gabriella's smile widened. "So, when is it exactly?"

"Well, we wanted to catch the carnival," Jason muttered, "So we were hoping tomorrow."

"Saturday?" Kelsi clarified as Jason nodded and flashed her a grin, offering his hand to pulll her up. "Sounds great! I'm sure my grandmother wouldn't mind," she said with a thoughtful expression.

Chad looked around in wonder. "Would... seven work for everyone?" After a small amount of time to think, we eventually agreed on meeting at the food court of the mall at 7.

"That works," Kelsi said with a grin as she left with Jason to grab her backpack and sheet music from the piano.

With an awkward silence following their departure, I shook my head, my hair falling near my eyes. Standing up, I helped pull up Gabi before the remaining seven of us packed up and were ready to leave. And since we all didn't exactly live too close to another, we split up; Ryan and Sharpay heading down North. St. with Zeke, Chad and Taylor heading towards Main St., Kelsi and Jason sprinting towards Hancock Dr., and Gabriella and I heading towards Harding St.

A/N: My first High School Musical fic! I know this chapter was basically pointless, but I needed to establish the fact they were making plans. Please review! The next chapter is mostly Gabriella's POV, then it changes and so on. :D

Also, my laptop has no spell check, so I apologize!
