A note as of July 2009: In 2007, this fic was reported and deleted because of the overwhelming number of OCs (the four main boys were Suoh, Li, Takeshi and Hasake). It's understandable that this fic wouldn't necessarily fall into the category of NARUTO when the only remaining character was Sasuke. Thus, I have changed it (the four boys now are Neji, Shikamaru, Naruto, and Kiba), took parts out, and Narutofied it, although keeping my main OCs, Rilo and Sukaino.
You may be wondering why the main pairing is Sasuke and Rilo as opposed to the usual SasuSaku. While SasuSaku is my definite OTP, I wrote this before I realized how much I liked Sakura. (Yes, in 2006, I didn't like her one bit.) So I created an OC who would clash with Sasuke and fit my ideals as good fit for him. You can call it Mary Sue but I love Rilo. My first, and probably last, main original OC leading lady.
Please enjoy!
Chapter One
A Short Girl and Four Boys
The shriek that bit through the afternoon air was sharp and disbelieving.
"WHAT?"
The reply that followed was cheerful.
"Your brother and I planned it a few months ago."
"And you didn't TELL ME?"
"Well, that was-"
"Dad, you have got to be kidding me! I can't move—what about my school?"
"Oh, I've already talked to them."
"But- what about your job? You love it here!"
"Oh, I'm not moving with you."
"WHAT?"
There is a time where a family moves on and they decide to pack up and go to an entirely different country…even though in the same continent. For junior high graduate, Rilo Miyaki, an only girl in her family, her father had decided to send her and her high school senior brother, from Hong Kong, China, all the way across the sea to Hokkaido, Japan.
"Oh, I'll come in a month or so. It's just that my job wants me to stay another month so they can confirm my other teaching job in Hokkaido. I'll have a job there, don't worry. Plus you have your brother to take care of you while I'm gone." Rilo's father smiled at her.
"Who- KENTARO?"
Her brother came through the front door, sports bag over shoulder, and breathing slightly hard.
"Sorry I'm late from practice. It ran overtime today."
Mr. Miyaki smiled at the both of them.
"That's alright. Okay, start packing because we leave in four days!" Rilo cracked, then and there.
"FOUR? AARGH! WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY FAMILY? THIS IS NOT HOW I WANT TO BEGIN MY HIGH SCHOOL YEAR!" She yelled before running into a wall. She dashed upstairs and out of sight.
"I have to put up with that thing for a month in Japan?" Kentaro asked exasperatedly. Mr. Miyaki sighed, and then retired to his study.
Rilo might have been a girl, but that didn't stop her from going all out in outside and club sports. After living with her nine male cousins and her older-by-four-years brother, she had grown up to be a small athlete with a bright mind. Although vertically challenged short, she continued to aspire as a scholar athlete and a young girl. A tomboy, in other words. In Hong Kong junior high, she had earned her reputation as "the only girl on the basketball and track team who wasn't a cheerleader" or "the only girl who played sports and wasn't stupid enough as to fail a class and be unable to participate in sports" or something like that. She was an MVP captain, and on her way to great heights. Plus, she had a karate ability and a small fist that could knock out any guy.
Rilo had never really developed a close bond of friends at Hong Kong's Junior High. They were more like friends, but Rilo preferred hanging out with the boys. Her personality was different. She was bashful, yet bold, and took on any dare that came her way without hesitation. She was smart, but unladylike, and probably the worst klutz ever. She was not afraid of taking on anything in life, and a smart brunette.
As for her brother, Kentaro Miyaki could be considered as overprotective…times seventy four. He wasn't so much as jealous that someone could be capable of stealing his little sister's heart and taking her away from his "overprotectiveness" forever. In fact, she had never come close to going on a date because before she could say yes, Kentaro's fist came in contact with the suitors' face or nose. Plus- all of the suitors who asked Rilo were sordid and low blows. She would always be safe under the eye of her calm brother. Overprotective? No way.
Four days seemed like 96 hours and nothing more to Rilo. She savored her time with her friends from school rather lightly. She would miss them a lot, but still.
On the morning of her departure from Hong Kong, they appeared at her door.
"What are you doing here?" Rilo had not expected them to come back one last time. She suddenly felt very guilty about leaving them.
"Well, seeing as we're never going to see you again…we wanted to give you something." They handed her a white box, and Rilo took it, a low feeling in her stomach.
It was a baseball cap, the purest of royal apple red she had ever seen.
"Red is a friendship color," one of them said. "And we know you'll make new ones in Hokkaido…so whoever wears it will always be your friend. We already all put it on, so we're in the cap."
"…thank you," she said, every ounce of thankfulness dedicated to them now. They still thought of her as a friend, even though she hadn't considered them ones. They were too nice. But now…
Rilo was leaving them.
"Thanks, guys…" And she could not have meant it more.
"Don't forget us." She put the cap on after they left…they would always be her friends. She would never take it off.
"Ms. Miyaki, you're going to have to take it off."
Rilo was at the headmasters' registration office in Hokkaido High School now. She shifted nervously in her white oxford and gray skirt.
"But, sir I-"
"Those are our code uniform rules. I'm sorry."
"Please, this hat means more to me than anything," Rilo said desperately. "I would kill for it- please…" She had made a deal with herself to never leave it behind and she wasn't about to start breaking it in less than a day.
The headmaster sighed.
"…under two conditions." Rilo was about to smile, but she slapped it off and nodded.
"One, you must not use it as a distraction in school towards anyone- including yourself."
That was easy.
"Two, you must participate in a play coming up later this year. The part you will be playing will be left up to your new homeroom teacher."
A play? She thought. I can't do plays…I can't even act…but, it's for the hat…
"Fine!" she burst out, a little louder than she meant to. "Er…sorry. I mean, yes, okay." She quickly got up and out before she could embarrass herself any further.
She hadn't gotten lost on her first day at least…the classroom was big and bright. Some kids were already there, and by the looks of it, had already created their own cliques. There was a large patch of girls in a spot, another one of boys in the corner, and another group of boys in the back corner…or four of them. They looked at her as she entered and smiled at her. She returned it rather weakly and looked at the ground. She glanced at the teacher's desk; he wasn't here yet. Some looked and stared at her, others ignored. They resumed their conversations.
Rilo swallowed hard. She wondered how Kentaro was doing at his high school. It must have been hard for him to transfer in the beginning of the senior year. She closed the door quietly and slipped to the back of the room. She chose a seat next to another empty one and sat down. Everybody in the room stopped talking and gasped. Rilo swallowed again and spoke up.
"Um…did I do something wrong?" She asked weakly. Maybe they already had their assigned seats. After all, she had arrived a few days late. A girl who was decking herself in lip gloss spoke.
"You, like, just totally sat next to that desk, caphead," she said callously. Rilo almost sneered when the girl spoke. Another girlie-girl in the class.
"Well, like, I'm totally new here, so, like, I didn't know, glossface," Rilo said, mimicking her. The girl looked taken aback, but resumed her position. She smirked at her friends and walked up to Rilo, who stood up. Since Rilo was short, she had to admit she looked rather small compared to the model-built stick figure in front of her.
"F.Y.I. that's Uchiha Sasuke's desk," the girl said pointing to the vacant seat next to Rilo.
"So?" Rilo said, deadpan. Everybody gasped again. The girl narrowed her eyes.
"Sasuke's the most popular and coolest guy you will ever meet. That's my seat, shorty. Move." That struck Rilo with a bang. What came next was completely unexpected.
With amazing speed, Rilo maneuvered a swift move to get behind the girl and quickly drew back her fist, but someone caught it as it was drawn back. Rilo gasped and half turned. It was that group of four boys who had smiled at her.
"Hey," one boy said.
The girl stepped back one, and then raised a hand to slap Rilo while she was being held, but another boy in the group caught it.
"Don't mess with her. She could knock you down in five minutes, I can tell," he said coolly. The girl yanked out of his grip and stalked back towards her group.
"Hey," the boy said again. "Are you okay?"
"Um, yeah," Rilo said, unsure if she could trust them. "Er…thanks?"
"We know you could have probably decked her out yourself," another one explained, "But she's a total blabbermouth and you'd get in trouble. I'm Kiba, by the way." He smiled off his green eyes.
"Shikamaru," another said.
"Uzumaki Naruto…or just Naruto." He seemed much brighter and happier than the other three…contrasting the last one, who wasn't even looking at her.
"Neji," he said, and that was it. Rilo felt uncomfortable for a minute.
"So, why're you wearing a baseball cap?" Kiba wanted to know.
"Oh, um this? My-"
"How'd you get past the head dude?" Naruto asked excitedly, but got popped in the head.
"Don't interrupt a lady when she's talking!" Kiba said.
"Oh, that's really okay," Rilo smiled weakly. "My old friends gave me the cap."
"That's really amazing to convince the head dude to wear it on school grounds."
"I think you're a first, right, Neji?" Kiba asked him. Neji didn't say anything, but did what was unmistakably a nod. That was her acceptance.
She then realized who these boys were.
They weren't dangerous.
They weren't cocky.
They weren't jocks.
They weren't rude.
They were happy.
They were nice.
They had defended her.
They were the group that let her in- even Neji, as she later learned, thought of her as a little sister, even if he was silent all the time.
Their little sister. She was the little sister of the toughest band of boys at Hokkaido High.
They were now her overprotective group of brothers and best friends.
Move over Kentaro.
I will love you to bits if you review. :D
