Chapter One:

Isolation

Atem stared in awe at the many, huge buildings that were just a block down. He could even see the school from where he was standing. He was so happy that he was now living in a city.

"Mom...?", called Atem quietly.

"Hun?", answered his mom.

"Can I go out?", asked Atem shyly.

"No."

"Why not?", asked Atem, cocking his head.

"Because I said so, that's why."

"Alright, mother...", replied Atem sadly. He heaved a heavy sigh, and went to his new bedroom. It looked like his old room, except for the amazing view he had from it. He remembered being raised in an isolated area, with no friends. Even his family members didn't visit him. He felt...trapped. In a cold world, with hating people. Even his mother acted strange towards him...

Atem could remember going to school, how all of his classmates seemed to hate him. To despise his very existance. They acted almost like...they feared him.

Atem sighed again, plopped onto his new bed, and started to play with his plushies. His plushies. The only things in the world that kept him from going insane. They were his only friends, who understood his feelings and hardships. The only things that were there for him when he needed them.

The real reason Atem wanted to go out into his new subdivision was to make some friends. To have a companion in this lonely and hating world...

Atem's eyes watered at the thought of friends. How he had wanted one so badly throughout his childhood, but he never did get one. His only friends were his plushies, who would always listen to what he had to say.

"Atem!", called his mother, breaking his thoughts.

"Yes, mother?", called Atem from his room.

"I'm sending you dinner, okay?"

"Alright..."

His dinner was soon brought up to him. There was a gentle knock on his door, and the sound of footsteps, as his mother left for her dinner. Atem heavied a heavy sigh, as he walked to his door, opened it, and picked up his dinner which was on the floor. This was how Atem ate, all alone in his room. He was not allowed to eat with his mother anymore. He had no idea why. She wouldn't even talk to him. She didn't care what his grades in school were, or about anything that included him.

Atem was used to the silence of his room, although he wished someone would care to speak with him. To actually know him as a person.

"Mom?", called Atem.

"Hun?"

"When will I be going to school? And, where will the school be located at?", asked Atem, as if he really cared anyway.

"I'll leave you a note tommorrow morning. Now, get ready for bed. You're starting school tommorrow."

"Alright..." Atem washed himself up, got his new school uniform ready, read a new chapter in the novel he had been reading recently, and turned his light off. But, he could not fall asleep. Instead, he was daydreaming. He was daydreaming of the book he had been reading.

Besides his many plushies he owned, books were his compainions as well. They would take him to many different worlds and places, as well as kill his bordom.

'Maybe...maybe this new school will be different...', wondered Atem to himself. He hoped deeply that that would be the case. Atem then wandered into a peaceful sleep, hugging his favorite plushie, the Dark Magician...
