Notes: If you read, please REVIEW.

Quatre sat quietly next to the pond, leaning back and bracing himself on his elbows. Heero and Trowa had left that morning for a mission, or so they said. The two boys had become closer in the past few weeks. They were behaving almost like Wufei and Duo. Quatre just shook his head. Heero had always felt that relationships were a liability. Why was he so free with Trowa now? The blond boy was almost sure that the two had not disappeared for the week on any kind of mission. He knew what they really had on their minds.

Meanwhile in the forest, a long haired blond boy was attempting to outrun a crazed female. He had his gun drawn and continued running at full speed even though he had lost sight of her ages ago. He stopped suddenly and listened. He couldn’t hear the crazy woman following him anymore, but he knew he couldn’t go back to Oz after what he had done. They would kill him on sight.

“Nnn,” the strange noise escaped Zechs without him willing it to. He put his gun away and continued to run towards the area that looked as if there might be a clearing. At least he could rest there. He liked the thought that he would be able to see everything around him. If Noin came after him again he would be able to take off into another part of the forest. At the last line of trees, Zechs’ foot caught an overgrown branch and he tumbled out of the dark forest and into the sunlit clearing.

Quatre heard the noise and twisted into a standing position with gun drawn. His lightning quick reflexes had saved his life in the past. Zechs also pulled himself up from the ground and drew his gun. It was just a reaction. Quatre’s eyes narrowed, all his senses turned to the other boy. Zechs was breathing heavily and looked as if he were about ready to pass out. His clothes were torn and he was injured, though not badly.

“What are you doing here!” Quatre yelled, panicked. He knew that wherever Zechs was, Oz couldn’t be far behind. He listened closely and looked around, trying to place the troops that would surely be following the other boy.

“I’ll put mine away if you put yours away,” Zechs said as he gestured with the gun. He had to admit that he was feeling rather uncomfortable with a gun staring him in the face, and he was in no mood for any type of confrontation right now. He held up his free hand and threw his gun to the side so he didn’t have it on him at all. He hoped this would make the other boy feel more comfortable. Without a weapon he posed no threat. Quatre looked pleased as he put his gun away as well. It was a good sign that Zechs had been so willing to throw his gun first. It gave Quatre a sense of relief. At least the boy wasn’t posing a threat to him at the moment.

“Take that damn ridiculous mask off,” Quatre said. Zechs obliged as he sat down on the ground, attempting to regain his normal breathing pattern. “Why the hell are you here?”

“Noin was chasing me,” Zechs said with a smile through gasps for air. He had used damn near all his energy running. “She was upset with my decision to leave Oz. Wanted to screw me silly or something.” He was speaking far too calmly to be taken seriously and Quatre started laughing.

“Oh. You were serious?” Quatre asked as Zechs glared at him. “Where is Oz?”

“I told you!” Zechs said. “I left them. The only person following me was that damn crazed woman.” He leaned back and winced as he agitated a cut.

“You are injured,” Quatre stated. He didn’t really like talking to the pilot, but he didn’t feel he had another choice. He was always such a kind soul and he could never find it in his heart to turn anyone away when they needed help. He was just worried that Zechs wasn’t looking for help, but that he was a spy for Oz and now he had them in his trap.

“Not bad,” he replied. “Do you mind if I use your shower and then I will be out of here?” Quatre snorted. Though he didn’t say it just yet, he knew that the only way Zechs would be able to leave this place now was in pieces.

“Where will you go?” Quatre asked. His eyes narrowed. He didn’t trust the boy. “You’ll stay here so we can keep an eye on you.” Zechs stood and followed Quatre into the large house. He wasn’t happy that Quatre wasn’t going to let him go on his way.

The small blond boy looked around before letting Zechs in. He wanted to make sure Duo and Wufei weren’t in the living room. It was best that he had the chance to talk to them before they saw Zechs. He walked to the bathroom and showed Zechs everything he was going to need. Luckily they had some extra clothes that would probably fit the larger boy.

“I am going to talk to Duo and Wufei about our new situation,” Quatre said coldly. “If you leave this house I will know, and you will be dead before you can count to ten.” Zechs nodded. He knew Quatre wasn’t one to throw around idle threats. Quatre headed upstairs to talk to the other boys and Zechs dropped his clothes to the floor and eased himself under the hot water. His scrapes and cuts stung a bit, but it was nothing he couldn’t handle.

“OW! Damn it, Duo! You BIT me!” Wufei exclaimed. Quatre tried not to giggle when he heard this small outburst as he was standing on the other side of the door. It was funny to think about the relationship between the Chinese pilot and the braided boy. Their personalities were so different and Duo had always gotten on Wufei’s nerves, but now they just seemed to belong together. It was like the perfect convergence of two opposites.

“Oops. It’s not so bad, is it?” Duo said with a devilish smile. They heard a soft knock at the door. “Come in!” Quatre pushed the door open with an amused smile.

“We need to discuss something,” Quatre said as he sat on the edge of the bed, thanking Allah both boys were still at least partially clothed. He had walked in on them before and shared several uncomfortable moments because neither boy ever felt the need to get dressed. They were comfortable with their nudity and expected everyone else to be that way as well. Quatre was having an understandably difficult time trying to figure out what it was he wanted to say to the two boys. There wasn’t much that he could say. The fact was that the enemy was currently showering downstairs as Quatre tried to break the news of his very arrival to his fellow pilots. The blond boy took a deep breath.

“What is it, Q?” Duo asked. He knew something was up because Quatre had never been so reluctant to launch into a conversation with them before. It was a little disturbing.

“Zechs is downstairs,” Quatre blurted. He was trying to drop the news as easily as he could, but common sense walked out on him. Besides, what else could he say?

“What the fuck?” Duo asked. His immediate reaction was that they were under attack and sure to be captured, but he couldn’t find his gun. He had jumped out of bed before Quatre could say anything else and started rummaging through drawers to find as much firepower as he could.

“I don’t know,” Quatre said. “He said something about leaving Oz and something about Noin chasing him, and now he is downstairs taking a much needed shower.” Duo shook his head, but stopped going through drawers. He couldn’t believe Quatre was taking this so lightly. This could prove to be a problem.

“We can’t let him leave,” Duo stated. He knew that if the boy escaped he could easily tell Oz where the pilots were hiding. “He has to stay here until we can figure something out.” Quatre nodded in agreement. The only thing they could do now was to watch Zechs. At least he would know he was at their mercy. Any of them would kill him instantly if it was needed.

“Okay,” Quatre said as he stood. “That was easier than I thought it would be. You can come down when you are ready and we will talk about our terms with Zechs.” Wufei nodded and pushed his dark hair out of his face. He wasn’t at all happy that their play time had been interrupted, but it happened. After all, their first duty was that of Gundam pilots. Quatre left the room and headed downstairs. The other boys would show up when they were ready.

“Hey,” Zechs said as he looked at Quatre. He was drying off his hair. Quatre just nodded in his direction and went to the bathroom to get a brush. He walked past Zechs and gave him the brush on his way to one of the chairs. He sat, watching the other boy silently.

“Would you mind brushing my hair?” Zechs asked somewhat sheepishly. “One of Treize’s boys used to do it for me while I was there because it’s kind of hard for me to get to the back with the length and thickness.” He gestured to Quatre with the brush. Quatre just rolled his eyes and went over to the boy. This wasn’t the first time he had been asked to brush incredibly long hair. After all, when Wufei wasn’t around, Quatre always seemed to receive the great honor of brushing Duo’s hair whether he wanted to or not.

“Why not?” Quatre asked. He sighed as he took the brush from the boy and went to work on the hair. It fell loosely and easily thanks to the use of some good conditioner. Wufei and Duo walked downstairs to see Zechs leaning comfortably into the brush strokes. His eyes were closed and he had a content look on his face. He almost looked as if he were purring, or glowing. It was hard to tell which it was.

“Quatre’s found a new pet,” Duo said with a laugh. At least they had taken a shower before coming down. Quatre didn’t want to know what they had been doing upstairs, though he had a fair idea. Wufei just laughed and Quatre glared in their direction. Wufei sat cross-legged in one of the chairs as Duo watched Zechs. He decided it was time his hair was brushed again and he ran upstairs to get his brush. He bound back down the stairs, making as much noise as he possibly could, just being typical Duo as always.

“What is he doing here?” Wufei asked calmly. Duo planted himself in front of the Chinese boy with a cute, pleading smile, and handed the brush back.

“Please, Wu-bear?” Duo asked as he pulled the elastic band out of his damp braid. They hadn’t had enough time to dry it completely, so it was still quite wet. Wufei sighed as he untwisted the braid and ran the brush through it slowly. Zechs’ eyes were still closed and no one seemed to want to answer his questions.

“He is here because I found him and brought him in,” Quatre answered. Zechs nodded in agreement. He was happy to get the attention he felt he rightfully deserved. This was much better than the plan he’d had before which basically consisted of hiding out in the forest as long as he possibly could until Oz just stopped looking for him.

“That damned woman was after me,” he said quietly. He was leaning further into the brush strokes now. Wufei was extremely suspicious of this new blond boy. A smile worked its way to Zechs’ lips.

“Well, you have to stay here now,” Duo said. “We don’t have any extra bedrooms though. This place only had three.”

“I can sleep on the couch,” Zechs offered. He didn’t really want to stay there, but he knew there was no point arguing with these pilots. He valued his life far too much for that.

“Where is the helmet?” Wufei asked as he finally realized the boy wasn’t wearing his trademark bird face.

“Took it off,” Zechs replied. “Shit! I left it outside… if that damned woman finds it she’ll know I’m here!” Duo sprang up from his position so he could run outside and dispose of the mask before Zechs could protest. It wasn’t like the blond boy would need it again... If he really left Oz, that was. Blue eyes followed Duo’s form as he ran out the door.

“If that ‘damned woman’ would have found it she would have known we were all here,” Duo said through gasps for breath when he came back in. He glared at Zechs, silently chastising him for his carelessness. You would think that he would be more cautious as an Oz operative, but apparently that just wasn’t the case.

“He can bunk with me,” Quatre offered. “There is a queen bed in my room. Besides, someone should keep an eye on him at all times and he isn’t going to get that down here on the couch. What if he decides to leave through the night?” Wufei nodded in agreement. He didn’t particularly like the idea, but there was nothing else they could do with Zechs.

“I think we should just kill him,” Wufei said as he narrowed his eyes and looked at the other boy again. He didn’t like this situation at all.

“Don’t say that, Wufei,” Quatre said. “At the very least he could be useful to us. I mean, at the very, very least he could be a bargaining chip with Oz.” Zechs was a little annoyed that they were talking about him like he wasn’t even there.

“What do you want us to call you?” Duo asked. Zechs looked up, a bit miffed that the brushing had stopped.

“Zechs, Milliardo…. Anything you can think of really,” Zechs replied. “I don’t mind. People have called me all manner of things in the places I have been.” He ran fingers through his hair and smiled when Quatre resumed his job. His hair was more than manageable, but he wasn’t going to complain if Quatre was willing to continue brushing it.

“I like Milliardo,” Quatre said. Wufei just narrowed his eyes. He didn’t like the idea of familiarizing the boy any more than they absolutely had to, but he couldn’t expect the same from Quatre.

“Zechs is easier,” he said shortly, going back to work on Duo’s tangles as the American boy sat down. “It will remind us of who we are dealing with.”

“I’ll just call you Mmmm,” Duo said with a laugh. “What? It’s shorter than Milliardo, and not as mean and unfeeling as Zechs.” He licked his lips seductively as he looked at the blond boys. Quatre’s face turned a deep shade of red, but Zechs had no reaction since his eyes were again closed.

“Milliardo it is,” Wufei said grudgingly. He didn’t like the fact that the other two were so readily entering familiar terms with the other boy. He was, after all, quite a bit older than them and he had worked so closely with Treize for so long. He quietly justified his own suspicions and decided if the other two got themselves into any messes over this then that was their issue, not his.

“This place is so small,” Quatre said. “You can have your own room once we move to one of my estates, but for now it looks like we are sharing a bed.”

“Sharing a bed with the enemy,” Milliardo said with a hint of humor in his voice. The thought that he was even in the same house as these pilots was almost more than he could handle, but it was better in here than out there where she could find him.

Wufei was still extremely hesitant about keeping him here at all. If the decision were his, Zechs would be dead by now, but then again, so many had already been killed in this war-torn universe. Perhaps they could save one more life… even if he had been an enemy in the past. Only time would tell if he was safe now.

“Maybe we can learn to trust each other,” Duo offered. He didn’t like the tenseness he felt in the room. It was kind of scary actually. He felt as if Wufei was going to pounce at any moment. Of course, he wouldn’t feel that way if every muscle in Wufei’s body had been relaxed. The truth was that the Chinese boy was ready to pounce at any moment.

“Do we have anything to eat?” Wufei asked as his stomach suddenly reminded him it was getting close to lunchtime. Duo’s stomach let out a low rumble and the boys laughed. Milliardo ran his fingers through his hair as he stood; just to be sure Quatre had done a thorough job. When he was pleased, he followed the other boys into the kitchen.

“I’ll make something today. You guys just sit there,” Quatre said with a gentle smile. He really did brighten a room. Milliardo couldn’t help but smile back at the boy. There was something about him that made it impossible to dislike him, or maybe Milliardo liked him so much because he hadn’t been too quick to kill him. It was a comforting thought that at least one of the boys was willing to give him a chance he felt he greatly deserved. He looked at the flowers in the center of the table and smiled. They were lilies. He hadn’t seen lilies in such a long time. He enjoyed flowers, but never had the chance to keep any in his quarters.

“Oi, Q! You made potato salad? I love this stuff, man!” Duo said, excited. They reveled in the chances to eat something good as it wasn’t often they were able to eat good things, but Quatre could always turn whatever they had into a five star meal.

“I made it this morning before I went out,” Quatre said as he dished out the potato salad. The rest of the meal was quite simple. They had bologna and cheese sandwiches and fresh fruit as well. Milliardo seemed to be enjoying the meal the most.

“This is great,” he said as he tasted the potato salad. “It definitely beats the food at that bunker.”

“You cam from a bunker!” Wufei asked, frantic. Milliardo had definitely left that part out earlier.

“Yea,” he replied. “It’s behind that forest. I doubt anyone is going to come out looking for a traitor. I am sure you will be fine.” Wufei did not look impressed. He wasn’t happy that Milliardo had left that detail out.

“We need to do something,” Wufei said. “Like move into the estate early.”

“The farther we are away from her, the better,” Milliardo said.

“I should leave you tied to a chair here!” Wufei yelled. “I can’t believe you didn’t say anything to us! Do you have any idea what this could cause for us? Of course you do! What am I saying? You work with them.”

“Not anymore,” Milliardo responded in a calm voice. It was almost taunting. He wasn’t trying to argue with Wufei, he just wanted to make his point. He hated always being seen as the enemy, but from what he heard they didn’t look at his sister in any different light.

“Maybe we won’t have to disappear,” Quatre said. “I can call ahead and have my guys set up, but we might be able to stay here until the scheduled move. If we are raided here we can always leave. The Gundams are easily located.”

“Q’s right,” Duo said. “We would have to float around on manual for a while before actually heading to the safe house to throw them off our trail, but we would be okay. Heero and Trowa wouldn’t be happy if we left them anyway.” Wufei nodded, but he still wasn’t entirely happy about this arrangement.

“How do we fit two in a Gundam?” Wufei asked flatly.

“We could fit two in mine,” Duo offered. “It would be cramped, but it would work. The estate isn’t that far away.” Wufei nodded. He hated it that everyone was coming up with a great solution for every problem he brought up. He was content to sit at the end of the table and sulk, muttering something about justice being served. It was easy to tell he wasn’t happy. He never was unless his ideas were being used. He didn’t like it that the other boys didn’t see the same problems he did. They had too many solutions.

“Quit sulking,” Duo said harshly. He hated it when Wufei got into these moods. He wasn’t about to allow it this time. Wufei glared at him from his position at the table. He really didn’t want to take Milliardo with them anywhere and thought it was a perfectly good solution to leave the boy sitting in the house until Noin came back to claim him.

“I really can leave,” Milliardo said. “I can go right to Relena if you don’t trust me.” He cringed with that last offer. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about going to her, but staying with the pilots would prove to be no picnic as well.

“No,” Wufei growled. “We already went over this. We can’t risk you going back to the bunker.”

“God DAMN it! Make up your minds already!” Milliardo yelled as he stood and stomped up the stairs.

“Second door on the right!” Quatre yelled after him. He figured the boy was heading to a room to sulk and he didn’t want him finding his way to Wufei and Duo’s room. Wufei’s temper was quickly changing. It wasn’t taking much these days. Maybe if Quatre stopped interrupting them…

“Would you kindly tell him that we have made up our minds and he is staying here for surveillance?” Wufei asked through gritted teeth. Quatre just nodded as he pushed himself away from the table and headed upstairs. Wufei and Duo stayed at the table.

“Dealing with Noin would have been less trouble,” Milliardo said to himself. “This is such bullshit… Calm down Milliardo… this isn’t like you.” He paced around the bedroom until he heard a knock on the door. He walked to the door and threw it open, expecting to be met by a Chinese boy with a tight ponytail.

“It’s just me,” Quatre said quietly. Milliardo stepped out of the way and let the smaller blond boy step into the bedroom. He felt like he needed to apologize to Milliardo or something. He wasn’t really sure what he needed to do. He just knew that he felt bad about something and needed to fix it.

“What do you want?” Milliardo asked. He sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall as if he were trying to burn a hole in it.

“Wufei says that he has already made up his mind and you have to stay here for surveillance,” Quatre responded as he sat next to Milliardo. “I understand that you must feel like a prisoner here. I don’t expect you to enjoy it, but at least attempt to like it.” Quatre was trying to be understanding, but he didn’t really know how Milliardo was feeling about all of this.

“Yes, captured by the very pilots I have been attempting to destroy,” Milliardo said flatly. He wasn’t impressed with his new predicament at all. He was bitter that of all places he had to end up here, but even more bitter that Quatre hadn’t killed him right off. What had kept the boy from shooting him? After all, any of the other pilots in the same situation would not have hesitated to shoot. Milliardo just did not understand. What brought him here? What was the reason that he needed to be holed up with these pilots?

“I’m sorry, Milli,” Quatre said with an impish grin. He had decided that he wasn’t going to treat Milliardo any differently than he would treat any of his fellow pilots. After all, Quatre didn’t see the boy as a threat or as a prisoner. Milliardo would still have his own free will while around Quatre. Wufei was another story entirely, but at least Quatre would treat him like a real human being.

“Milli?” Milliardo sputtered. “Milli! Where in the world did you get that from?” He was visibly miffed.

“I’m not going to treat you any differently than I treat the pilots. You aren’t a prisoner to me,” Quatre said. He was always ready to make friends with anyone. “Therefore, Milli.” Milliardo glared. It was obvious that he wasn’t at all impressed with the nickname.

“Hn,” he wrinkled his nose as he made the noise. He didn’t really have anything else to say to that. He was just happy that Noin was far away and he had a warm bed. Speaking of which…

“Are you okay with the arrangements?” Quatre asked with a lifted eyebrow.

“Um,” Milliardo paused. “The only person I have ever shared a bed with was Treize, but I’m sure I will manage. It seems more than large enough for two.”

“Good,” Quatre nodded. “Now please, come back downstairs.” Milliardo nodded and followed Quatre outside.

“Do NOT knock on our door until late afternoon tomorrow,” Duo said as he stopped to talk to the boys in the hallway. He had two wine glasses and a bottle of wine. “We have had too many interruptions this week.”

“Okay, Duo,” Quatre agreed with a smile. He knew that the boys were catching up on some much needed alone time. Milliardo just kept looking at the floor.

“It’s okay, M,” Duo said with a smile. “He’ll come around.” Duo winked and then sauntered off to the room he shared with Wufei. Quatre let out a giggle as he watched the boy open the door dramatically. He waited in the hallway until he heard the click and then headed downstairs.

“It gets kinda loud around here at night,” Quatre explained. “It isn’t too bad with the doors shut. At least Trowa and Heero are gone.”

“Mission?” Milliardo asked.

“Something like that,” Quatre replied with a soft smile. “I think they just wanted some time alone so they made up this mission story in order to get it. Duo doesn’t think Heero would do something like that, but the Perfect Soldier has changed a great deal since Trowa happened. I mean, Wufei has changed a great deal since Duo happened. Maybe we will get a good night’s sleep tonight.”

“What do we do until then?” Milliardo looked around the living room dully.

“Doesn’t matter,” Quatre responded. “As long as I keep my eye on you, I stay out of trouble with Fei." Milliardo snorted. He wasn’t exactly afraid of Wufei. He did know the boy was a worthy opponent, and one not to be challenged. He didn’t want to be on the receiving end of the wrath of Wufei. It would be best to go with the flow of things for the time being.

“I don’t know,” Milliardo responded. “What is there around this place?”

“There is a small pond,” Quatre responded. “The woods, but the predator is out there possibly looking for you.” Quatre laughed as Milliardo glared at him. It wasn’t like the older blond boy to run from things, but apparently the last of the cheese slid off Noin’s last cracker. It had to be bad if Milliardo couldn’t deal with her.

“Can we just stop mentioning her?” Milliardo asked. He couldn’t say he missed Noin because he didn’t, but Treize was another matter entirely. He did miss Treize.

“Milli, what do you want to do?” Quatre asked. Milliardo decided to ignore the fact that he was being call Milli.

“I told you I didn’t care,” he responded. It wasn’t like he had any idea what there was to do in the area. He had spent all his time at the bunker without any chance to wander around in the outside world. It wasn’t like he had much of a social life at the moment.

“We could just hang out around here,” Quatre said roughly. “Sit around and stare at walls. What did you do for fun?”

“We never had fun,” Milliardo replied. “We trained and built better weapons. Treize and I had something, but I don’t know what it was. It never went anywhere.” He sighed as he thought about the time he spent at the Oz bases. He didn’t consider it an entire waste of time, but it wasn’t exactly what he wanted either.

“What happened?” Quatre asked.

“Une,” Milliardo responded. “It’s what always happened. She wasn’t exactly pleasant to me. She knew I had something for Treize. I can’t believe I am telling you this. Anyway, she would always come in at the most inopportune times. She hated me, but what could I do? I was one of Treize’s boys. I warmed his bed and woke in his arms. That’s all that ever happened. I don’t think he ever had any real depth of feeling for me.” He sighed again. He seemed slightly pained by the memories, but he was doing a good job suppressing it. Soldiers like him very seldom showed emotion.

“Did you want more from him?” Quatre asked the question without really thinking. He couldn’t help it if he felt for the boy. That was just the way Quatre was.

“I did,” Milliardo answered. “I never got it, but I couldn’t help wanting something more. It doesn’t matter now anyway. He wasn’t good for me and I can see that now. It is a pity I couldn’t see it before, but this way really is best. I never really wanted any of it I guess… at least not moving from base to base and bunker to bunker. I didn’t want the life of an Oz soldier, but it wasn’t bad once Treize began favoring me so I hung in there. I guess it just got to be too much for me, and that brings me to the part where I ran into you outside. What about you? What’s your story?”

“Mine isn’t very interesting. I was born into a well off family,” Quatre said. “I am a Gundam pilot now. The only thing of any interest is the nightmares I have been having, but even those don’t matter in the grand scheme.” Milliardo nodded. So Quatre hadn’t had a particularly difficult or interesting existence. So what? There had to be a good story or two packed away in there somewhere. The trick would be drawing it out of the boy.

“Yet you have managed to stay soft through the carnage,” Milliardo said quietly. Quatre looked up at the other boy.

“Aye,” Quatre responded. He looked down. “I guess I have. I have to stay soft though. The other pilots are so caught up in things. Everyone needs some sort of outlet and I try to be there for them as much as I can be. I can’t let the war get to me. If I did then I wouldn’t be the person my friends know and love. It is a different thing for me. When I see all the bad things that are happening I just force myself to think about the good that will come of it. It helps me get through it and remain the person my friends need me to be.” Milliardo nodded. He really did understand. It was amazing that Quatre had been able to think of his friends even through all that had happened.

“That is an admirable trait,” he said with a smile. At least he felt like he could be real around the other blond. It was already dark outside. They hadn’t realized they’d spent so much time talking downstairs. Quatre yawned suddenly.

“I’m going to bed,” he said as he stood and stretched. Milliardo got up to follow him. When they got upstairs they could hear muffled moans coming from the room down the hall. At least the boys were being respectful tonight. Quatre pushed his door open and changed for bed. Zechs removed his shirt, but kept the sweatpants on. Both boys climbed comfortably under the covers, making sure not to touch the other.

“Good night, Quatre,” Milliardo said before turning over.

“Good night, Milli,” Quatre replied and then shut off the light.
